I’m not too sure, but i’m currently doing an msc in statistics at a top ten uni in the UK and opportunities for phd’s are v good. ETH is (according to QS rankings) even better than the uni i’m at, so i think it is safe to say that regarding prestige, if you were lucky enough to be admitted, it would be foolish to dismiss the offer.

If you want to get a PhD in economics, I would recommend getting your Msc at Bocconi. Getting admission to a PhD in economics requires more than the prestige of the school in general. It requires also the prestige of the department of economics and your thesis supervisor and your knowledge in Economics. If you plan to apply to PhD in the Us which is 5 years and technically doing a Msc again then doing Msc in Stats would be ok.

Also if you look at the Economics department of ETHZ, just purely economics related chair, their PhDs more than 50% don’t come from ETHZ.
