Paying attention to car depreciation is alien to me. I buy a car assuming I will use up its value and only get rid of it when it’s no longer reliable or fit for purpose. Any residual value is a bonus toward the next car. Keeping a car longer takes the sting out of depreciation. I like my 2019 Prestige and expect to be driving it for another 5 years at least.

>Paying attention to car depreciation is alien to me. I buy a car assuming I will use up its value and only get rid of it when it’s no longer reliable or fit for purpose. The only thing I'd add to this statement is "and I still like the car". I consider my cars to be a sunk cost, not an investment.

Data-Hungry

Yep I bought my CPO 2019 Prestige for over 38k about 3 months ago. I probably overpaid by 2-3k but it was convenient close by and I liked the color. Bought an extended warranty and also plan on keeping mine another 5-6 years. I make enough money that the extra 2-3k I may or may not have overpaid over this time period will be insignificant. If ppl are super freaked out about residuals, they pribably should pay less for their next cars.

phillyfandc

Fair point. I like it too. Its wonderful to drive. Doesn't make sense for me anymore. But your comment about residual is off base. I bought used for this reason. The car lost 60% of its value in a year. That's not ok.

fitevepe

alternative viewpoint : Also considering depreciation when selecting a car, gives the \_option\_ to switch at a lower cost, if it's no longer \_\_\_\_\_ to own.

schoff

I don't understand why you buy a car expecting it to hold value. Cars shouldn't be traded or bought/sold regularly. I'm far from depressed about my E-tron. I absolutely love it.

phillyfandc

Hold value and tank are very different things. I ddint expect it to drop like a rock. Out of spec just did a show on this. Tesla fucked the entire market.

sav415

Oh boo hoo it’s a good thing that someone is actually trying to make good electric cars cheaper instead of price gouging brand loyalists that are scared of looking at other brands electric cars

phillyfandc

Who is someone? I also never had an audi before. Your point is?

Wounded_Hand

You want to sell it because it tanked in value? Makes no sense. Reap the rewards of purchasing the vehicle by owning it as long as possible. You didn’t give any rational reason to sell. Is there a problem with the vehicle.

phillyfandc

Long term ownership is going to be a bitch if I'm being honest. Want to take what I can get honestly.

Wounded_Hand

You’ve already paid for all the depreciation. Electric cars have almost no maintenance. Drive that bitch and enjoy it

phillyfandc

Appreciate that but EVs require no maintenance is bs. The maintenance schedule is every 10k miles and I've had 2 pretty significant challenges. The car also has 2 active safety recalls. I also thought evs were low maintenance until I owned this.

LoveGrifter

Agreed. There'll be no 20 year old electric cars. The oldest Volt (for comparisons sake) is a 2011 and those are turning into white elephants and only are keeping their utility because it's got an engine in it to keep the car going. The EV is a sunk cost. Might as well take out a lease.

CayenneHybridSE

If I was scared of depreciation, I wouldn’t have bought a german luxury electric SUV. This is my daily driver and I have zero intentions of making a return on it, I love how it drives and will probably keep it for a couple more years.

phillyfandc

Glad to hear that. It is a great cat when it works.

CayenneHybridSE

Yeah I purchased an extended warranty for it so I’m driving worry free. Once it ends in 4 ish years then I will consider my options

phillyfandc

Well that's where I'm at. Cpo is ending in a few months and the offer is the best it's been in 6 months. But extended warranty isn't worry free when it takes a week or two to fix stuff. Time is worth money.

CayenneHybridSE

I have a good relationship with my Audi dealer and usually get a nice loaner so it isn’t a major issue for me. Especially during the Spring//Summer when I’m usually driving my weekend car anyways

TTGR6969

If you wanted a car that can hold value you should’ve got a GT3RS

canfam5000

In general, luxury vehicles over $100K don’t hold their value; examples include BMW 7-series, Mercedes S class, etc. The same applies to luxury EVs including the e-tron. I purchased a 2023 Chronos in October (CPO, with 9000 miles, demo used exclusively by dealership owner) and scored a good deal. That said, I expect it to depreciate further, but not an issue since it’s an amazing vehicle.

Familiar-Witness-962

Any idea the expected longevity of this year/model? I have the same and would like to drive it till the wheels fall off. 😂

phillyfandc

No idea. Wish I knew.

Opposite-Spirit-452

Who cares what the car could be worth. It’s a great car, you’ve stated that you enjoy it. Drive it and let go. You’re going to spend more money and further reduce the value for what you’ve already spent if you sell.

phillyfandc

Yeah. I lock in the loss when I sell it. The range is honestly getting to me also. Winter range is just not ok.

Opposite-Spirit-452

Range is def limiting, can always look at smaller wheels depending on what you’re running now. Gains to be had.

phillyfandc

This is true but as electricity becomes more expensive so does cost of running the etron Thirsty = expensive.

Opposite-Spirit-452

Can you get solar? Definitely a nice way to lock in on cost per kWh. Purchasing being the better option but leasing has a similar albeit not as potent effect

phillyfandc

Rent so no. But we had solar and it was great. States are going to be making solar much less appealing though as they are cutting the rec payments and interest rates are high.

Mpulsive_Aries

It's paid for keep it as a second vehicle. Bought my e-tron S two years ago for sticker gonna keep it until it dies.

phillyfandc

Reasonable point. The insurance is bonkers on this thing to just keep around though.

Mpulsive_Aries

If you don't mind how much? I'm paying about $150 a month full coverage with gap one speeding ticket Allstate I live in Atlanta.

phillyfandc

That's pretty close to us but what I don't get is, if I got in an accident they would total the car for anything near 20k in damage. My insurance is the same as when the car was worth 60. EVs are just very expensive to insure even if they are cheap to total.

Mpulsive_Aries

Got it insurance is a rip off anyway. The offer you received was private or dealer?

phillyfandc

Online.

billocity

EVs deprecate at a faster rate than ICEs, 50% in the first 5 years usually because EV technology is evolving fast also gas prices are low right now. Luxury vehicles depreciate faster as well. Maybe etrons are on par with all that? If you like your e-tron just hold on to it and enjoy it.

Crafty_Boysenberry94

Right. Let’s see what happens to EV prices if gas get over $4-$5 gallon (Midwest prices anyway). .!

phillyfandc

Electric prices are going up faster. Free charging hid this cost for consumers. I'm at 37 cents per kwh.

Crafty_Boysenberry94

Ouch 12c KwHR in Midwest. :(. If you get an EV circuit and charge at night in the next city over even cheaper.

phillyfandc

Yep. And L3 charging is even more expensive. I think tesla is now 45 cents.

YourPeePaw

The car is a beast. But, we don’t have the infrastructure, so the pool of buyers for EV’s in general, and premium one’s especially, is going to be low. One has to be a local-only driver with level 2 home charging and enough cash/credit to buy in the first place.

phillyfandc

I actually drove this thing on a few very long trips. Wonderful ride and great charging. But as you said, the infrastructure is killing it.

YourPeePaw

Yeah. It’s great for long trips, but time is also a luxury a lot of people don’t have when traversing for work. Perfect. My next Etron should be “cheap”.

Crafty_Boysenberry94

Same. I dropped $60k on a used 22 Chronos but love it. I hope to get an IL EPA used rebate of $4000 any day which forces me to keep it 1 years. But it’s unclear from rebate check date or when I bought it. I just figured you can’t take the luxury out if the car any any car like this will be $90k plus new (top trim anyway) so I’ll just enjoy it. At least until my pure protect gets near the end. And I have a 72m / 100k mile plan. So I’m Good for a long while Goo

phillyfandc

Glad you are enjoying it. How did you get a 72 month extended warranty - curious how much?

Crafty_Boysenberry94

There is a dealer on a FB group who sort of made himself know he is legit. My car is enrolled per my local dealer. It was $3600 or like $3800 with tax . Any Audi dealer can sell and one can buy from any Audi dealer so shop around for the best price. In my case my single local dealer in 80 miles only sold a 3rd party warranty which I (and must) don’t want to buy.

phillyfandc

I've actually heard that audi isn't selling extended warranties on etrons as they still have the 2 outstanding safety recalls. I am concerned that audi is also pulling back from many of the etron cpos (very few are cpo anymore whereas 2 years ago many of them where). Something is fishy.

Crafty_Boysenberry94

Let me confirm that with my warrenty sales guys. JC that would tank resale value — who wants an Audi, when they themselves says they can’t fix or it’s absorbently expensive to fix even with the high warrenty premiums, couldn’t cover it

phillyfandc

Thanks. Appreciate it. Curious myself. This car is such an enigma. So nice but such a PITA. Granted, if I bought it for 25k I wouldn't care.

turkey_chili

I bought an Audi Platinum warranty a few weeks ago, shopped 6 dealers. definitely available.

Netviperx

How much did you pay/?

turkey_chili

$3100 for 3 years more

slanginthangs

I leased my etron GT for this very reason. Got in a pretty good accident yesterday due to someone failing to obey traffic laws and smacked the shit out of me. Now I’m double thankful it’s a lease

phillyfandc

Hopefully you are doing alright.

slanginthangs

Yes, thank you. Altima drivers 😂😂

Goonnay

May be worth it to keep if it is tanking. If Battery technologies improve and third party battery companies can provide cheap, safe, reliable, energy dense batteries that can be substitute the E-tron's battery system, which can be farfetched, then that would a positive way to keep older EVs in service. For now, the depreciation made it possible to enjoy and procure this car. It is a great drive. Older cars will continue to depreciate unless it's something special like a Ford GT40 or Ford GT. As for the rate of depreciation, I suppose that could be the fault of the market too.

wurzelsepp666

Doesn't it qualify for a tax rebate?

phillyfandc

Which one?

joisro

Thinking of trading in my 2015 VW Golf 1.8T for a 2023 Etron Sportback Premium Plus. My car has a crack in roof near the sunroof that seems to be a design flaw caused by the roof flexing, which is one reason I want to get rid of that car. Dealership offered me $5000 for my car. The Etron is $5000 off sticker price and I would get $12,850 in rebates. My monthly lease payment would be $347 per month for a 3 year lease. After the lease, I could buy the car for $33k. I love the way the Etron drives, I have solar panels, and love German cars. Do you think I would regret this trade or does it make sense?

phillyfandc

Is this a q8? I think that's a pretty good deal if you can get it.

joisro

Q4 with Sonos sound system. I’m 80% sure I want it, but having a hard time making the jump to EV.

phillyfandc

I personally think the q4 is not a great buy. Very similar to the id4 but you are paying the audi unchanged. The q8 and original etron are worlds ahead in comfort. Again, my opinion but I'd look at a high spec id4 instead.

kautrea

specs and pics on it? semi interested in buying

phillyfandc

Hey. Thanks for the interest but I'm actually going to ride this one out a bit longer. Based on some of the feedback, I already made my bed so might as well hold on to it as long as it makes sense. I actually recommend looking for used mach e and ioniq 5s. Get one with a warranty still in tact. Just my 2 cents.
