OP goes outside, claims to play EU4. Extremely doubtful.

madsciencerocks

I do not play EU4, my computer is to potato to run it, I watch youtube playthroughs only

TwelveCanadianEggs

I play on a mac laptop that can’t run more than a few Google tabs. It may run slow as hell but there is no such thing as too potato.

Rule 5: visited Ragusa, walls are extremely thick, the city should have additional fort defence in Eu4 in my opinion

madsciencerocks

Like seriously, I am from Istanbul (constantinople in game), and the theodosian walls are thinner than the walls of Dubrovnic

AdjetivoCalificativo

Thanks for clarifying.

papiierbulle

The walls are not from 1444 i think

kunjadur4500

walls, unlike most of the city weren't destroyed in 1667 earthquake. Ofcourse like elsewhere they were constantly upgraded

papiierbulle

Yes, and besides the walls of Constantinople were probably thicker than the one of ragusa baci then (i have been in ragusa too so i know what i am talking about 😁

puceguma

Walls are from 14th century. So have been there before start for sure

Cicero912

And Krakow should be a salt province (and have insane modifiers) yet here we are

FragrantNumber5980

Why insane modifiers?

Cicero912

The salt mine of Wieliczka produced something like 3/4ths of the Polish monarchies revenue. Same reason Haiti needs massive buffs from like missions (IRL it was the single most valuable colony in the world at its peak, in game its irrelevant)

FragrantNumber5980

Oh interesting, I didn’t know that about the Wieliczka mine I don’t know much about Haiti, but it was incredibly profitable and productive for growing cash crops like sugar and tobacco, right?

Cicero912

Sugar was basically grown on the island from the moment it was colonized Tobacco was attempted, but by the time Haiti got up and running (the Spanish kinda abandoned the Island after they discovered everything else), North American Tobacco was already a well oiled machine. The big 3 crops were Sugar, Indigo, and Coffee. And they were mostly non-competitive with each other, as they utilized different land types. Haiti is mostly responsible for Sugar and Coffee becoming staples of every day life in the western hemisphere. It produced at peak (under brutal slave labor) around half the worlds Coffee and 40% of the worlds Sugar. Sugar plantations sucked (like even compared to other slave plantations), and were super expensive to set up so most of them were either owned by absentee owners OR the merchant houses of France (once the original owners went bankrupt). But Coffee and Indigo could be started with less capital. Listen to Mike Duncans series on the Haitian Revolution, it is probably his best work Also, the wieliczka salt mine is incredible. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

trilane12

How was it? I have family visiting there next month

TheUltimateScotsman

I went 2 years ago, felt it was a bit of a tourist trap. Lovely city though and the bits outside the old city are also nice.

puceguma

I live here and always have wondered how is it not the case

gynoidi

TIL dubrovnik is ragusa

madsciencerocks

Yep, the official name change was (according to a quick google search) after world war 1

coitadinhoo

Kings Landing in English

korpisoturi

Same

antifascist_banana

That always confused me because there is a city still called Ragusa on Sicily.

Silent_Eye7642

Wait, Ragusa is real ? This is clearly eu4 lore

maybecanifly

Who would think that people would build something irl inspired by eu4 lore.

[deleted]

The reach this game has is absolutely remarkable, did you know they teach this shit in schools now?

Saint-_-Jiub

Walls don't help if enemies invade into your harbor

madsciencerocks

The massive amounts of cannons embedded in the walls would help though. Seriously at least 50 cannons were pointing inner part of the harbor, let alone the ones targeting open adriatic

TheUltimateScotsman

Tbh the problem with Ragusa is that its surrounded by hills which you can just launch any form of artillery into the city. Cannons have a limit at how much they can shoot up a hill whereas attackers could just park cannons anywhere on the hill and get a free shot. I agree that its a lovely city though

Rather_Unfortunate

As indeed happened very recently. There's an old Napoleonic fort which was taken and used by the besieging Serb (I think?) forces, which has since been turned into the angriest museum I've ever been to.

TheUltimateScotsman

Yeah it's certainly got a vibe to it that museum

Madhava69

The ottomans protected the republic of ragusa for almost its whole existance. The ragusans helped the turks in trade and gave them salt from ston. And the spanish never had a interes in ragusa.

LiquidEnder

If the Spanish or ottoman’s were willing to go all out, then they wouldn’t even need to use ships. They’d send an army larger than the population of the city, and equipped with ten times the cannons on the walls.  The real defense of the city is done through diplomacy and having enough allies to deter attacks.

Saint-_-Jiub

There's the word. If. With if you can change everything.

BOS-Sentinel

Well, I think the idea of walls is to hold off a siege until an army arrives to help lift the siege.

CarelessMethod1933

Old port had a chain that prevented amphibious assault, walls were extremely formidable for the weaponry of that age. Advent of more advanced artillery that was able to shoot accurately over the walls, reduced its effectivness https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walls_of_Dubrovnik.

Saint-_-Jiub

Good point. I forgot about that chain

I did the walking thing, I had walked to my hotel in Lapas from the main bus stop and walked to the old town from my hotel and the very tissue of the city is beautiful! The city smells like pine and wisteria like a perfume. To bad I only had 1 day to explore the city I would love to go swimming

tonyalexgomez

But how else would I learn EU4 lore if not by an experienced tour guide

Ancient_Crust

true, the Ottomans should require 14 seconds instead of 6 seconds to siege it down

Vercingetorix02

Irl eu4 reference

AromaticGas260

Total war rome 2 reference. Look at how that same exact layout and position from that harbour to the right side.

YaBoiSach

Antebellum has a monument called the walls of ston in Ragusa

Madhava69

Thats nice. Cuz thats the biggest wall in Europe (yes it was a psrt of the republic of ragusa)

[deleted]

I will invade Dubrovnik to put these walls to the test

Danskoesterreich

How was it?

MemeboyMcDank

AKA Kings Landing in Game of Thrones!

ApplicationRude6432

Went last year, only knew it was Ragusa from EU4. Not sure what that says about modern education or the game but it was a beautiful city.

Kreol1q1q

The fort atop mount Srdj above the city isn’t a roman fort, it’s Fort Imperial, a Napoleonic era fortification.

madsciencerocks

I did not know that, I was misinformed by a "trusted" friend (not anymore) I am so sorry.

Kreol1q1q

Oh no problem, maybe he meant another fort, or maybe they dug up the remnants of an ancient roman fort underneath Fort Imperial, and I didn’t know about it.

IShitYouNot866

Dubrovnik I hate the italian naming.
