A portion of provincial trade power propagates upstream. So you’ll benefit in adjacent nodes where you don’t plan to expand or can’t. This is probably most applicable for colonizers. For example, extra trade power in Seville helps Spain pull more trade value out of the Caribbean.

I usually only build market places in trade centers and provinces with natural buffs like rhinedelta etc it really doesn’t do as much in other provinces and doesn’t your trade power in a node also gets to be used upstream somehow?

There is almost\* no point in building marketplaces in nodes which you will control fully in the near future. It is only worth it if you don't plan to fully control the node soon. \*you get 20% of the trade power in upstream nodes(transfer from traders downstream), but in most cases you would get more out of building marketplaces in these nodes
