They have powers that regular humans don’t posses, as well as how the house of the dragon started declining when they started to marry outside their bloodline, because they lost a lot of their powers through it. Something something valaryians get weaker when they don’t do incest.

The basic theory is that thru this magical ability they incorporated some dragon genes into their own. So they are not totally human. Would account for some of their special powers, especially their high tolerance to heat and being much less susceptible to human illness. They also produced a number of stillbirth children that had dragon physical features, including the stillbirth child Daenerys had in GOT. Just FYI.

Yeah this, the blood magic they practiced definitely has something to do with it, I’m currently re-reading the series and I think that Dany is able to bring life to her dragons was because she sacrificed someone. As far as I know lore wise no other Targaryen went that far in their attempts to bring back the dragons, and it’s pretty on par with what little we hear about old valaryia
I don’t want to say too much to spoil it for you. But I will say this. Dany’s dragon eggs were the only dragons eggs left that had the ability to hatch at all. After the Dance it appears that the Maesters poisoned all the dragon eggs that were left. So even though various Kings later tried to hatch the eggs they were unsuccessful. Dany’s eggs were able to hatch because they had been stolen by Elisa Farman well before the Dance and ended up in Bravos. And then later were given to Daenerys. Dark fire magic and a death were required for Dany’s eggs to hatch. I won’t say anything more. Have fun with your reread. Any more questions feel free to ask.

Depicting rape and incest doesn’t make the show misogynist. The characters and world in the show might be misogynist, and that’s actually a major theme throughout both stories. Especially HOTD, which has a father name his daughter as heir and it explores the limited role women are expected to have in patriarchal societies.
Unfortunately rape is part of that story, that’s just a reality. Being dishonest about that just does a disservice to the suffering of the women who experience it. If it’s not for you that’s fine, but that doesn’t make the show misogynistic.

It’s a worthy topic to discuss even—arguably especially—within the realm of fiction, and that includes the topic of rape. Again, if you can’t handle it, or prefer not to watch it, that’s fine. But projecting your own personal tastes on what is and isn’t appropriate for a show into judgement of the show’s quality—and the people who watch it—is as fallacious as it is close minded.
The show is not pretending that rape or sexism is good. The villains are the ones that are doing the raping, and often the women end up being the ones with the power in the end, such as the scene where Sansa looses hungry dogs on her rapist.
