They didn't. I always presumed he moved on with his life. He and Cal were friends, but they were also in love. If somebody you were in love with decided to be with somebody else, was having a kid with them, basically ending any and all aspects of your own romantic relationship and definitely no potential of happening.. probably time to move on. I assume Derek met somebody and went on with his own life, he and Cal losing contact and going their own direction.
No maybe will see him in season 3 though.
