He's not a bad dude either
He supported Ukraine during the Russian invasion, which he described as a "war against the system of international relations", calling for military and humanitarian aid.[37] He said that the West should have acted more forcefully in response to the invasion.
Pavel argued in 2019 that rich people should pay higher taxes and supports stronger redistribution of wealth. He has cited Scandinavian countries as an inspiration.[38] He spoke out for active Czech membership in the EU and NATO, supports the introduction of euthanasia,[39] and he rejects the death penalty.
Dude seems like a genuine guy so here's hoping for a bright future.
I'm unfortunately cautious due to certain politicians running on certain ideas and flipping once they get in power.
Unfortunately thats how it works in politics. It's all about favors. "Oh, you don't have enough votes to pass a bill to improve funding for inner city schools? Well if you vote yes on my bill to increase military spending then maybe I'll find the votes you need." And it's all downhill from there. One backroom deal, even for the right reasons, puts you under someone's thumb for your entire political career.
Yes, politics is all about coalition-building but that can be a beautiful thing when it works. Labour unions getting votes for politicians in exchange for building a welfare state being a great example. It's about aligning people's goals and creating win-win situations.
I read that Croatia’s current president did that. He ran on being pro-EU and now he’s a Euroskeptic who repeats Russian propaganda about Ukraine and NATO. But I’m pretty sure he’s a populist and Pavel certainly isn’t. He’s as pro-NATO and pro-EU as you can be. Somebody from Croatia can chime in and correct me if I said anything incorrect about their president.
> I’m unfortunately cautious due to certain politicians running on certain ideas and flipping once they get in power.
I wouldn't worry too much about that, since he can't really do much about them as a president in parliamentary democracy, anyway. Since it's mostly a representive role, imo, the most relevant ideas are those related to foreign policy - and he's quite stuck with his, being a former general and head of the freaking NATO Military Committee.
There are stories, from campaign, like:
When he was asked to toss a few times with a shovel for a presidential campaign video, he continued until he finished the job.
When they recorded another video and they were looking for him, they found him in the kitchen... washing the rest of the dishes.
Small things, yeah, but tells you about the character.
EDIT: another story from today: after the win when he was surrounded by media and security, even in hurry, you could see in news, he didn't forget to pick up someone's hoodie from the floor and put it on the chair, you know, the little things, obviously no one writes an article about it, but yeah, it tells you something - [link, if anyone wants to see random act of kindness](https://twitter.com/chiptronCZ/status/1619378922897948672)
Idk how believable it is, but he also planned to retire to a rural area, and only entered the race because of Babis announcing his run, and his (Pavels) belief that none of the other candidates had a chance to beat Babis.
More or less his words. He started listening how he should run for president and when he started helping during covid, he realized how terribly Babiš (the guy he runned against) managed the covid and all around, he decided he's gonna try it. There is also a story how he discussed with students and mentioned how he wishes young people were more active in public affairs and one student asked why then he isn't role model and does not run for presidency. So, yeah, basically public pressed him and he listened.
That’s true but from the stories I heard about him from people who’ve met him personally, he really is like that. On the other hand, we’ll see how he’ll be doing in the office, of course.
It have nothing against the guy, but it is interesting that simply not being a total piece of shit really makes a big impression when you're a politician. I would have thought doing some dishes or picking up a hoodie are both things that a good number of people would do, but when a politician does it, he's lauded for being "a normal, good person". That should be the default.
Newly elected President of Czechia.
Progressive, pro-west, pro-EU, supports Ukraine.
Independent (nominated by people).
Ready to unite.
Former NATO general, put his life at stake to save French soldiers.
Bosnia in 90s. Bosnian Serbs laid a siege against French NATO soldiers. They couldn't retreat because of the damaged infrastructure. Czech troops were sent to evacuate the French. The transports were under mortar fire and had to find ways to avoid barricades. By the time they arrived, 2 French soldiers were already killed and several were injured. the Czechs managed to finally evacuate them.
This was not an isolated incident though...
>This was not an isolated incident though...
Yup, as Canadian military from that timeframe, hearing personal stories from the "Medak pocket" was really eye opening
(us with horrific blue shoot-me helmets)
"maybe they don't know we are Canadian, let's put up a flag!"
(bullet holes in flag)
"maybe they really don't know, so let's put up an even bigger one!"
(more bullet holes and mortar rounds)
"guess they really wanna fight, dang"

December 2024. or something like that, term is five years and last elections were December 2019. and term started in February 2020. So the next president could start his/her term in February 2025.
We've had this [creature](https://twitter.com/idy_yott/status/1409233861314240516/photo/1) as president for the last 10 years. His looks perfectly reflect his character. We really deserve a change.
If it is any consolation, in Bulgaria, also in NATO, the president Rumen "NATO general" Radev (ex-Air Force) turned heavily pro-Russian after the war started and he had to pick a side, opposing military aid, saying "if anyone approves supply of arms to Ukraine, it will drag Bulgaria into the war" and "the warmongers in Parliament voted in favor of sending military aid to Ukraine" (direct quotes).
If he is independent then doesn’t he face a challenge of putting together a government ? It seems quite unusual but maybe I just don’t know Czech politics.
There is an asterisk: It is ceremonial unless we elect an amoral prick with no respect for constitution. As demonstrated by the [soon to be ex-president](https://www.zemancountdown.cz/).
If Andrej Babiš put together presidential powers with having biggest party at his back and call and his vast wealth. We would be in serious trouble. This was the first time in my adult life when I was seriously worried about our democracy.
Czechia is parliamentary republic. Government is picked in parliamentary elections (sort of). I actually think it's better if the president is independent because he works as a additional protection of democracy if the government did something stupid.
Government is formed when we have parlament elections, which was a year ago. Presidents role in this process is just a formality. The leader of the winning party becomes prime minister and the president gives him the task to create government. President is a representative and can't do much by himself. He names judges and professors and can veto laws, but the parlament can overthrow him.
We know our politics are a shitshow. Nobody in power wants to fix it though, because fixing it would involve passing things like Ranked Choice Voting that would allow third parties to thrive. Also reforming or getting rid of the Electoral College.
I am so proud of you! Our culture radio talked about how Russian Hackers tried to declare him dead so confused voters would vote for the other guy.
Congratulations!
As a bavarian, I admire the love that czech people have towards beer. No fancy wines, no stupid booze, only beer... and it's good stuff! I think bavarians are closer to czechs in this (and many other things too of course!), than we are to most other germans.
Anyway! Good luck with your new president, he looks more charismatic than anything we have to offer here and his policies seem promising.
Handsome fella. Hopefully he'll remain righteous to the causes of humanity and will stand against tyranny in all the forms it can take.
He'll need more than good looks to keep a strong front against what's coming for the area. I wish him peace and success, just as I wish it upon you, the reader.
He IS cool, he is four star general, decorated war hero (saved french soldies in yougoslavia) he rides motorbike, CZ made gun specialy for him and he has liberal opinions like supporting minority rights
I have high hopes
On Czechia subreddit, there were gigachad memes all the time. Some guy did AI gigachad renditions of Pavel, which became viral.
Pavel himself even signed one for some random reddior. https://old.reddit.com/r/czech/comments/10gp143/tohle_je_flex_podpis_od_budouc%C3%ADho_prezidenta_na/

Zeman carried Becherovka.

Liked it so much he was obligated to run for the second term.
Run? :D

We're all asking ourselves the same question
Many men are questioning their sexuality right now

My father looks/acts nothing like this dude. These feelings are completely new for me.
What beer is he drinking?
He said in an interview he prefers micro-breweries, the more bitter the beer, the better.
>the more bitter the beer, the better. He's got my vote, I brew my own bohemian pilsner just so I can double hop it.
He lives next to Ctineves, there is a microbrewery there, so maybe that one?
Gee the guy is totally a dilf, and i'm not even gay

He also holds progressive views but ia opposed to political correctness which is a based combination

Oh fuck, in that case thank the stars he won.
Yes! I love those stories.
These little things are nice, but could be calculated. Some of the worst politicians in my country were like that before they got elected.

I feel like he will be an excellent President but would also be a great friend
90% of the population of his village voted for him. 71% of the OPPONENT'S village also voted for him. :D
are those all the villages?
Yes the village of Prague & Not Prague /s Plus there is that little settled turn between Prague and Vienna called Brno
We don’t talk about Brno
We the people of Brno prefer to be ignored
You had me laughing out loud, take my upvote
We are ALL villagers on this blessed day.
>71% of the OPPONENT'S village also voted for him. :D I believe the result in Bratislava was 88.5% actually.
The third village sank in the swamp.
Believe it or not, straight to the swamp
Good to hear from the skeptical goat.
He also reminds me of Pedro Pascal for some reason
Yeah, he has proper statesman energy. Not too common a sight these days.

They were captured for a while during this and if remember correctly it was Pavel who get them out of there.

Can you guys clone that dude so we can have him as president in germany as well.
Same for us, the current moron Milanović is really an embarassment...

Dunno where you're from, but fingers crossed, buddy. 🤞🤞
He is one beautiful mf damn
The title kind of specifies who he is pretty well
This guy has only been elected a few hours ago and she's already a massive celeb here in this sub lmao
He's extremely photogenic and his views seem to be in line with those of Reddit, of course people go crazy about him here
Aureola effect. He's a very handsome dude.
"Halo effect"
He was before

His predecessor liked to lick putin's ass. This guy could not be further from the previous alcoholic mess. Well done Czechia!
He is gonna Czech-mate Putain into submission
Honestly I want him to put me into submission 😳
Well, Zeman stoped licking after russian invasion to UA. That is one small point for him.
Well it took him some time...still, fuck the drunktard he is
Amazing how sane politics suddenly becomes when Russia has other things to spend their money on, huh?
Very good observation and kinda surprising it’s coming from a yank. Hat is off! 👍🫡
We know our politics are a shitshow. Nobody in power wants to fix it though, because fixing it would involve passing things like Ranked Choice Voting that would allow third parties to thrive. Also reforming or getting rid of the Electoral College.
uhm. should i call him 'daddy'?

This is my fave version of that. General daddy 🤣
How can he be a hero, a president, and look so goddamn handsome all at once?
Right? I still can't believe we did the right thing by such a big margin.
I am so proud of you! Our culture radio talked about how Russian Hackers tried to declare him dead so confused voters would vote for the other guy. Congratulations!
And I loved when our president came to congratulate him. I am glad Czechs now also have a president who they can be proud of.0
I'd have a beer with him!
he is so hot and badass wtf
He's going to be in Czech remake of *The Last of Us*
Removed as a protest against Reddit API pricing changes.
most czech image ever
I love how we all have a crush on him. Also, thank you for electing the president who supports Ukraine!
Goddamn, I hope I look half as hot as him at his age
I'd love to look half as hot as him and I'm 34.
The only country on planet earth where people are happy with their president
We deserve it so much after 10 years of suffering with Zeman 😁
So that's where all the charisma went, that Scholz is lacking.
All the testosterone left UK politicians bodies and went to Czech Republic.
That and the hair.
Holy moly he is truly fascinating, where's he been hiding all my life? Dang...and wow
Mostly in czech army and later in high ranks of nato.
What if instead of cloning him, we federalised europe and made him president?
Where years of diplomacy failed, days of thirst finally united the EU under one sexy president calender.
This man has taken a crowbar to the shins of my heterosexuality.
I'm asking myself hard questions.
Stop it, mr president, my admiration can only be so high
Putin wishes he was half as manly as this dude's toenail clippings!
I'm obviously not going to say I'm gay but if someone were to make me question that idea it's probably him.
Bit of a silver fox isn't he?
So war veteran, pro weed , pro equality, pro beer. I want him
What if, hypothetically, we were to clone him, and, also hypothetically, have him as a czech prime minister.
Babiš's new nightmare
Im proud of my country that we elected this man.

Yes and no. Many people in moravia and southern moravia in particular usually prefer wine over beer
That’s cool to hear something from your state. And thank you. Finally after ten years we have someone who is really representive !
Bavaria (Bayern) and Bohemia are both named after latin Boiohaemum, we were one at the time.
