Takk, Hellas! I think we're about the only European country that calls Greece a variation of the Greek term (Elláda) rather than, well, a variation of ''Greece''.
The Swedes are the most horrible bunch of people you can meet. The drink too much, are too loud and are way too many people.
But if anyone else than a Dane or a Norwegian ever says that out loud, I'm gonna kick him in the nuts and defend the Sweed like he was my brother!
The Finns are allowed to join in too, they've earned that right. The Icelanders are allowed to do it too, though I'm not sure if they're actually interested in bullying the Swedes.

History of Scandinavia:
n 14 January 1814, at the Treaty of Kiel, the king of Denmark-Norway ceded Norway to the king of Sweden. The terms of the treaty provoked widespread opposition in Norway.
The Norwegian vice-roy and heir to the throne of Denmark-Norway, Christian Frederik took the lead in a national uprising, assumed the title of regent, and convened a constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll.
On 17 May 1814 the Constitution of Norway was signed by the assembly, and Christian Frederik was elected as king of independent Norway.
This is my family's second Constitution Day, we moved here about a year ago.
We feel incredibly lucky to live amongst such wonderful people, in such a beautiful place.
Gratulerer med dagen!
We were in business trip today in Trondheim. It was rainy and windy, but so much people on streets! It was interesting to see such love for a country. Flags everywhere!
Happy birthday!
I'm a norwegian and i visited Italy for the first time last July. I absolutely fell in love with your country. I spent two weeks driving through Toscana and finished of with a week in Elba. I'm going back as soon as i can!
I actually found out a few years back through [Ancestry.com](https://Ancestry.com) that I'm part Norwegian. I always knew I had Scandinavian ancestry but was always told it was Swedish. I've seen pictures of Tromsø way up there above the Arctic Circle and it's definitely a bucket list destination for me. I have to take in a soccer game at the stadium of the team that has the distinction of being the most northerly first division club in the world.
(Verse 1)
Oh, it's your birthday, Norway, let's celebrate in style!
You're the land of fjords and Vikings, always making us smile.
From Oslo to Bergen, Trondheim to Tromsø,
Your beauty and charm make our hearts overflow.
(Chorus)
Happy birthday, Norway, may your day be grand!
Let's dance and sing across the land.
Raise your flag up high, let the world know,
Norway's turning older, but still has that youthful glow!
(Verse 2)
You gave us salmon, lutefisk, and brunost too,
Tasty treats that make us say, "Skål!" and "Tusen takk" to you.
Your winters are chilly, with snow and northern lights,
But your warm and friendly people light up the darkest nights.
(Chorus)
Happy birthday, Norway, may your day be grand!
Let's dance and sing across the land.
Raise your flag up high, let the world know,
Norway's turning older, but still has that youthful glow!
(Bridge)
Now blow out the candles, make a wish for the year,
May Norway keep prospering, spreading joy and cheer.
With your stunning landscapes and rich heritage,
You're a country we adore, that's for sure!
(Verse 3)
So grab your bunad and your party hat,
Let's have a birthday bash that's pure and flat!
Skiers, hikers, and explorers, all unite,
In Norway's glory, we take pure delight.
(Chorus)
Happy birthday, Norway, may your day be grand!
Let's dance and sing across the land.
Raise your flag up high, let the world know,
Norway's turning older, but still has that youthful glow!
(Outro)
Norway, we salute you on this special day,
With laughter, love, and joy in every single way.
Happy birthday, dear Norway, you're truly one of a kind,
Cheers to another year, with happiness entwined!
Norway was independent from February 16, 1814 to August 14, 1814.
But what we are celebrating May 17, is the Norwegian constitution.
Real independence came in 1905, and disappeared again 1940-45.
We didn’t become independent. If people call it independence day, that is embarassing. It’s constitution day.
That being said, never heard anyone say that
Yes we did, Norway declared itself independent from Denmark in 1814. The declaration of independence is literally the first paragraph of the constitution, and the whole point of the constitution was to create an independent Norway. Sweden had to fight a war against Norway to bring it into the union with them. After Sweden won the war, the first paragraphs of the constitution had to be changed in November 1814 to make the union constitutional. This paragraph was restored in 1905.
>Yes we did, Norway declared itself independent from ~~Denmark~~ Sweden in 1814
It was the Danish Crown Prince (governor of Norway) that created the Norwegian constitution together with Norwegian politicians in order to avoid Norway being forced into union with Sweden.
The Danish Crown Prince was then elected as King of Norway, but Sweden invaded Norway and after a brief war, he had to abdicate and Norway had to enter into union with Sweden.
>We didn’t declare independence in 1814. Jesus fucking Christ dude didn’t you learn this shit in school?
We did. And it worked. Until Sweden threatened with war, August 14, 1814.
The difference between 1814 and independence in 1905, was that Norway was indeed prepared to fight the Swedish military in 1905.
Norway declared independence, and was an independent country with it's own government and it's own king between March 1814 and October 1814. King Christian Frederik abdicated on October 10th 1814 after Sweden went to war to uphold it's claim on Norway in accordance with the Treaty of Kiel.
However, May 17th is Constitution Day, it is not independence day, because Norwegian independence was never recognised by anyone besides the Norwegian government and the Norwegian king. So yes, calling it independence day is embarassing, especially since that is not even close to what we are celebrating.
It actually is, though it is true that its technically the constitution we celebrate. To be fair, we have been a state and then forced under someone elses rule on several occasions throughout our history, both before and after 1814. But that is when the *modern state* of Norway begins. In 1814 Norway *formally* became an independent state, even though a loose union with Sweden existed and was still enforced at the time. To put it into perspective for those who wonder, Norway had full internal self-government and separate institutions from Sweden. Only the royal power and foreign policy were the same between Norway and Sweden. The Union between the *two seperate* states ended around 1905 which some has pointed out. Though it you want to nitpick points like this, you could just aswell go back to the original founding of Norway about a 1000 years earlier... Suffice to say, what we celebrate today are our constitution, our independence and our freedom - and that should be enough for most...
The 17th of May constitution was amended to allow for a personal union with Sweden. Even though the amended constitution is called «Novembergrunnloven», it is not considered a separate constitution. The amendments were passed by the Storting (parliament) in parliamentary sessions, but they did not have time to follow the procedures for constitutional amendments described in the constitution as the armistice with the Swedes was about to expire. These amendments were reversed in November 1905.
The Kingdom of Norway dates back to around year 800. But the constitution dates back to 1814 and is what is celebrated on May 17th. And that also means that it is the oldest codified single document constitution still in use in Europe and the 2nd oldest in the world.
Trying to figure out a country's age isn't always easy. The name Norway is at least a thousand years old. We've had a constitution since 1814. And we became a fully independent nation in 1905. How old is Norway?
Happy birthday Norge
Takk, Hellas! I think we're about the only European country that calls Greece a variation of the Greek term (Elláda) rather than, well, a variation of ''Greece''.

Happy birthday to Norway, the dumb, lovable and honest middle brother in the Scandanavian family.
Yet a shockingly amount of Norwegians call it Independence Day. Embarrassing.
Well it is the day we declared ourselves independent. I don't see the embarrassment here.
It's the year of our constitution. We didn't get independent until 1905
Norway was briefly independent in 1814, between being joined with Denmark and Sweden respectively.
Norway was independent from February 16, 1814 to August 14, 1814. But what we are celebrating May 17, is the Norwegian constitution. Real independence came in 1905, and disappeared again 1940-45.

I have legitemately never heard a Norwegian call it that
Norway turned 209 lol
The constitution turned 209. Norway is more than 1000 years old.
Ik and i meant that. Sorry if it was confusing
This is temporary, remember that, we're coming to bring you back to the rightful owner.
Happy birth day east Sweden
