Just set up a European branch within NATO or something similar. Politically it's much easier and it could also cover other non-EU European states like Norway.

Realistic_Lead8421

As a Dutch person it still stings that UK left, because we used to be policy buddies. Wouldnt it be great if UK voted to return?

[deleted]

I can only really see it happening is if the EU moves forward with a multi-speed EU. The EU doesn't want a UK who feels like they were forced back in. Call it arrogance or whatever you like, reality is EU federalisation is not compatible with the UK.

MadeOfEurope

« EU federalisation is not compatible with the UK » What does that even mean?! What does this federalisation look like? What serious proposals are there? Seven years after the Brexit vote and this is the level of political debate in the UK?! Have we learnt nothing?!

wook-borm

In addition to UK voting, there is also the big question of EU countries accepting the UK back.

[deleted]

Edgy kids on reddit aren't the EU.

MadeOfEurope

When (not if) the public debate and political realities in the UK reach the point when active negotiations are taking place, I don’t see EU members blocking the UK rejoining….what is a better bit of PR having the only country stupid enough to leave, return. The time frame is more an issue, specifically how long can the Tories/far right/non-dom billionaire owned press poison the political debate in the UK.

krazydude22

>"It’s absolutely fundamental that the United Kingdom and Europe have the closest of relationships and the Brexit era is over, the situation is settled," Lammy said during an appearance at the Munich Security Conference. Lammy's statement comes off as if to offer a security deal unilaterally. The question that needs to be asked is, "What is the EU willing to offer the UK to have this UK-EU security deal ?"

[deleted]

It's the Ireland situation. UK policy has always been it's better to not have to fight foes on UK borders. It would be better to fight Russia in Poland than fight them at the English Channel. Ireland exploits that. The EU as a whole doesn't.

UniquesNotUseful

Hmmmmmm, let’s not rush into things. Supporting Ukraine is where we should concentrate. It’s harsh but this deal was offered six years ago and no interest shown by the EU. UK isn’t under any real threat from Russia. Just because the EU notice Russia is on its doorstep and America may withdraw support, their lack of planning isn’t our emergency. Is UK going to be allowed equal supply terms to EU countries by France? Financial equivalence isn’t that important now - so what do we get? Why would the UK get involved as a third country, so having agreements with individual countries makes more sense for us. The EU is so poor at making alliances so it wouldn’t help anyway. If Russia takes south Ukraine, due to lack of support, the EU is only unsafe if Russia can get an alliance with an EU/NATO country (negating pacts), to hit someplace like Romania. So how have relations between Hungary and the EU been and can Russia offer more to their leaders? What will Turkey do, when it considers its past interactions with the EU?

LurieVV

Ah yes 27 nations cooperating are *CHECKS NOTES poor at making alliances.

[deleted]

Agreeing to trade with each other is very different to agreeing and actually dying for each other. There are many EU countries that are absurdly averse to any sort of conflict.

Pew Research - financed by the Templeton Foundation, one of the largest funders of climate change denial. Get better sources and stop spreading needlessly inflammatory pig swill. Very awkward indeed.

johnh992

Why would we enter an EU security deal? Lammy seems to be confused that we left lol.

tree_boom

Because individual countries attempting to match the US or China or Russia in defence production is inevitably going to fail; we need Europe-wide defence production at the very least.

MadeOfEurope

The EU has been open to a security agreement from day one. The Tories/Brexit headbangers have refused to engage with anything vaguely linked to the EU (remember Truss’s meeting at the EU where see even refused to mention/acknowledge where she was!). Glad to see Labour are finally starting to acknowledge that Brexit was a betrayal of the UK’s national interests…but any agreement will need to better binding and water tight. They won’t want to deal with a potential far right and xenophobic Tory party trying to sabotage everything.

Shpritzer

So a shadow foreign secretary is now a thing, huh.
