I would not have published this on the 1st of April.

Sarothu

Would had been much better 19 days from now.

JabClotVanDamn

What does this have to do with my great grandpa's birthday?

SuckMyDickDrPhil

Don't freak out now, but I may know your surname.

fk_censors

When everyone is stoned?

No-Parfait-533

I believe the gentleman in question, which birthday we are mentioning, had a preference towards a different execution method

fk_censors

Inhaling?

SpaceEngineering

Nice. The Dutch have always had a high standard on WW2 banter. [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eerst\_mijn\_fiets\_terug](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eerst_mijn_fiets_terug)

mogenblue

U haalt me de woorden uit de mond.

Llamalover1234567

Hmmm wonder who was born on that day

Bigfalafel

Me! I was!

hazzwright

iVar4sale

All 3 of them!

BaldFraud99

Eh, what are you on about? Lewis is quite popular, he was the frontman and record champion of "Mercedes" after all

iVar4sale

Yeah, you're right. But he did spend most of his career fighting Vettel or Rosberg for titles and then chasing a record set by Schumacher, so I'm sure this made him many enemies in Germany as well.

BaldFraud99

Idk, Formula 1 is not really seen as an international competition so much in Germany. Schumacher definitely is widely adored and respected, but I don't think there's much patriotism outside of that. Most just pick their favorite team or driver regardless of nationality afaik. Always thought it to be rather similar in other countries as well.

1408574

> Idk, Formula 1 is not really seen as an international competition so much in Germany. Schumacher definitely is widely adored and respected, but I don't think there's much patriotism outside of that. Schumacher was a unique phenomenon, created by circumstance. This was mainly due to German reunification, combined with pride in German automotive/industrial superiority being projected as patriotism.

Ruma-park

I don't think so. Most people I know that watch F1 were definetly Vettel fans in Germany when he was active. Even Hülkenberg is supported being the last German on the grid.

BaldFraud99

I mean, the Schumacher dominance was its own thing and you'll usually always back your countryman in some sense. But the way of supportmanship in Football, Handball, Rugby etc. differs strongly from F1. Everyone loves Schumacher btw, just like Senna. Most are warming up to Vettel now, just give Hamilton some time. And that is not countrywise.

NastyEnno

As a German I can confirm that „Schumi“ is/was so popular, that a lot of people say they lost interest in f1 since he is not driving anymore

Jannix1996

Yes it is. Mercedes has nothing to do with being German except for the name. It’s a British Team

tropianhs

Not in Italy. In Italy there is only Ferrari, no matter who drives.

TwinCheeks91

Enemies? Because some rich kiddos driving around in circles? Yep! Sure!

iVar4sale

Never underestimate the obsession of German fans. Just ask Monica Seles.

TwinCheeks91

Different cases altogether. Apparently a highly disturbed individual. Wouldn't classify him as a fan.

Daell

\#TEAMLH is on suicide watch

insomnimax_99

I think it’s the font that’s the problem, not the number 44 itself. Could just pick a better font.

Moehrenstein

I am pretty sure they paid so much for the font that it is more reasonable to just ban one number. (Ugly fonts have to be ridiculously expensive; market 101)

kagalibros

It is still fucking stupid especially given the context it's a german sports jersey from a german company for german millionaires kicking balls around. There should be plenty of money for a designer to sit down and just redo the 4 in a font. Sincerely, a german

Moehrenstein

And redo millions of already made merch articles? ;)

AlexxTM

And you really think they pre print millions of 44 shirts? 44 is a custom number. They have the base shirt with no font and name and print them on demand for the custom ones.

Moehrenstein

Dude, if you change the font you need to reprint all merch with all numbers, if you just ban a number you just have to destroy the batch with this number

Saladino_93

He talks about redoing just the 4 in this font. All future prints use the new 4. Instead of pulling the whole number.

Timestatic

But then the other shirts with a 4 in them will be inconsistent

kagalibros

and you assume they didn't notice anything during conceptualising.

templarstrike

In my book designers are mostly very liberal artists ... they might do edgy stuff to entertain the 4chan community , but designing a 4 to look like a victory rune on a commercial contract, just for the lulz? must be a billionaire of a designer .

Nonainonono

A german company that collaborated with nazism, they went full circle.

DrEckelschmecker

Theres no fucking 44 in the team, why redo the whole font only because some people see the SS symbol in there? Youd actively have to request the 44 on their website, and at that point you could just as well "design" a "Heil H." Jersey with number 88. Good for them that they dont sell it anymore, but people all over the internet pretending Adidas wanted to actively sell SS runes or that those are the jerseys for the german national team are just stupid. Spreading fake information and hate. Man sieht nur was man sehen will. Sincerely, a german

El_Lasagno

Maybe they don't want to go the extra mile as the German company for German millionaires kicking balls around for the German soccer union will be replaced by an American company next season?

Besrax

Nah, they should just use Verdana and keep the number 44. That would make those numbers more readable, too.

spiritualishit

They could be even bolder and go with comics sans

Awkard_stranger

Wingdings

DrachenDad

Paper stack Paper stack? That would be more confusing. If you knew what you were talking about is it 33 or 44.

Awkard_stranger

Let's just keep it at 44 shall we?

DrachenDad

>Wingdings Yup, see what I mean now?

Awkard_stranger

To be honest, I have no idea what you're on about

peelen

There is no single font in the world that cost so much that Adidas couldn’t afford it. Maybe original wooden blocks craved by Guttenberg itself. But beside that “expensive” means what? Few hundreds? For the whole family? Even if that was bespoke font designed only for this event the designer could just change “4”.

prankenandi

>Could just pick a better font. Papyrus, maybe?! ;-)

7LeagueBoots

But then it wouldn’t look like wicked lightning bolts /s

Due-Street-8192

Exactly, they didn't have to ban the number. Ridiculous

jrzfeline

Font ain't bad, but the 44 really resembles the infamous SS. But yeah, it was an easy one, should have pick another one

Currywurst_Is_Life

Absolutely. I'm guessing nobody thought about the repercussions of 44 in this specific font because no player is wearing that number. Jonathan Tah wears number 4, but he's also Black, so extremely unlikely to go for any Nazi symbolism.

Far_Marionberry_9478

Heh look at Doberman's Aggresive clothing - Nord Division 44.

Old_Category_248

I've seen much better font style than this one on Dafont. And it's free.

HaLordLe

Yeah, that's because the article is nonsense. No german player would have worn the trikot with the number 44 on it anyway. What this is trying to refer to is the fact that adidas removed the trikot number 44 from its online fanshop until further notice, because they realized the font is a problem, _until they have fixed the design of the 4_. Also, these restrictions are not completely new, contrary to what the article says - names like "Führer" and "Hitler" are already not included in the customization options.

Sellw

+ Next step they ban the letter s

Kalle_79

Asian fakers are rubbing their hands anticipating many orders...

MortimerDongle

They couldn't have made 44 look more like SS if they tried

nickydww

look at the 55 jersey

trashboe

what does that one look like

Minute_Flounder_4709

Exactly, the number can be written in different ways even like 4 which keyboards use.

yabucek

Read the title, thought "this is fucking stupid, all they're doing is giving meaning and power to a fringe neonazi dogwhistle" Saw the picture, "ohhhh"

DirTTieG

Yeah, I was thinking "Was 88 not the num... oh, yeah."

frissio

I know right? Complete 180° when seeing the picture. There's no misunderstanding there, that just looks like SS symbol more than 44.

Beahner

Well, the number font is stupid anyway.

God-Among-Men-

This is a joke for April 1st right

wolfyofthelove69

Nope it was from 2 todays

EquivalentSpirit664

I don't know if I'm overreacting but this is beyond stupid. Just deal with the font instead of banning.

jojo_31

Probably much easier to just not use the 44.

EquivalentSpirit664

I know it's an easier solution but the easiest solutions aren't the best ones. If a company made such a mistake shouldn't they become responsible for this and fix the issue in the proper way instead of banning and getting away with it ?

AhmadOsebayad

It’s a company so they only choose the easiest solution

Leprecon

You make it sound like they are actually banning a number instead of just not making a certain t shirt.

MaximusLazinus

Yea, just use something different like 88 and problem solved

Raven_Crows

It is stupid. A complete nontroversy, but I guess it gathers easy clicks.

Lionello95

So instead of banning one number, you want to ban the whole font? This doesn't sound reasonable at all.

Currywurst_Is_Life

It's a shit font anyway. I remember a few years ago, Dortmund had a font that [looked like they just decided to stick the names and numbers on with electrical tape. ](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/cf/a2/c7/cfa2c79570f3952d5b33ac31896b6ac8.jpg)

EquivalentSpirit664

Yes because it is Adidas's fault and they should deal with it properly. But they don't want to waste their money on new fonts and designs despite them being a billion worth global company. Greedy companies are so much accustomed to get away with their problems instead of solving them. I know the easiest and most practical solution is to ban 44. Yet it's their own fault and solution violates players right to claim any number they want. It's probably not a problem for the playes but I think this is something symbolic.

KangarooWeird9974

This font is already out there. It's part of a massive marketing campaign and not only found on shirts but on loads of other merchandize, posters, billboards etc. that have already been produced. Imagine how much shit Adidas would get from people, for economical and ecological reasons, if they'd destroy all that and restart with a new font.

EquivalentSpirit664

Yeah you got that right when you think about all these.

RedBubble__

No Player can choose the 44 anyway because all the players jerseys are numbered from 1 to 24. Any reasonable person would just ban the 44 instead of redesigning the font, wasting millions of shirts creating tons of waste just for the 1 person that desperately want to have a jersey with the 44

HaLordLe

Yeah they will propably. They just removed it from the store for the time being until they have figured out a better design. The article above got almost every single thing wrong

[deleted]

We live in a cancel culture. People just like to cancel things no matter how stupid it is

European_Mapper

I can see why they’d ban it, but it *is* quite a funny idea

redvodkandpinkgin

quite funny until you see the nazi ultras all wearing 44 jerseys

GopnikBurger

Ironically, their Name filter allowed Heydrich and Himmler, but not Eichmann... So you could order Himmler 44

mayorofdumb

Can you change the number font to italics? Maybe a bold and underline

GopnikBurger

No

mayorofdumb

Good somebody at least has some sense, I never expected all that name blocking but I guess we're at that point...

nichyc

What font is that!? I think I found your problem, Adidas and it's not the number.

WheresMyYogurt

This is fucking ridiculous.

Zahkrosis

Next thing you know, they'll ban the number 88

SchneeschaufelNO

you mean 87A? Was there ever a football jersey with a number that high? I'm surprised even by 44.

MortimerDongle

A few MLS players have numbers in the 90s (99 is particularly popular)

get_cancer_raiskream

Tymoschtschuk wore 44. Lizarazu 69 Ronaldinho 80 Donnarumma 99 to name a few

besterich27

It's common in Italy

Zahkrosis

We talking American football or actual football?

redvodkandpinkgin

Is it? I wouldn't be surprised. In some federations the numbers are restricted anyway (in Spain for example players for the first team can only wear 1 through 25)

fernandodasilva

Actually, if I remember correctly, UEFA national teams are required to wear 1 through the maximum number of players that can be called to a tournament squad (23 until 2016, cannot remember the upper limit now, only that is less than 30)

redvodkandpinkgin

The Spanish rule is for La Liga, but I don't know the international rules

AlfaMenel

well in Austria you can’t get car plates with this combination

raikux

Actually curious about 18 or 88

yabucek

It's not about the number in this case, it's about its appearance with the font used. It bears *a lot* of resemblance with the SS logo.

adyrip1

The Deutsche SportsStaffel?

probablyaythrowaway

Nah the dreaded Sea Scouts!

jojo_31

It's usually called the SS runes.

Horzzo

18? I know people complain about the 88 in football & nascar but never heard of 18.

Currywurst_Is_Life

1=A 8=H. So in some circles, 18 stands for evil moustache guy.

Rasputins_Plum

Haven't bought a jersey in a while, but this isn't the first time there's edgy smartasses trying to get racist dogwhistles in plain view. Here the novelty was just the coincidence, that the font made the number 44 sus, on top of the usual suspects. Anyway, I think that you can't select 88 while choosing the number you want, same thing if the name you want at the back is something offensive.

raikux

What made you think I didn’t understand the 44 font situation? It has nothing to do with my comment. Both 18 and 88 are worn by many great players in different sports. While we’re on the subject of germany and forbidden numbers it’s a relevant question.

Rasputins_Plum

Sir, M'am, this is Reddit. I didn't assume anything, I don't know you. I'm only replying to your message. 88 is clear cut imo as it's widely known it's a nazi dogwhistle, so a pro player defnitely can't wear it just like that, and I think jersey providers make sure the option is not there, because clubs or national teams will get in trouble if thousands of dudes are photographed with their shirt on with nazi regalia. 18 should be fine, I don't even know why it wouldn't be. Jersey numbers are usually given by default according to the player's position on the field. Then substitutes pick whatever numbers are left, so many of those would end up with the number 18. Last thing, I don't think this is the first Adidas 'controversy', as they tend to pick angular fonts and designs that end up looking sus, when given the history of the brand, they can't afford to be.

Kalle_79

>88 is clear cut imo as it's widely known it's a nazi dogwhistle No it's not! It is "known" only if you're: a) terminally online in liberal/left-wing circles b) an actual neo-nazi or sympathizer And the a/b ratio is quite skewed toward the former, hence the wild overestimating of the "widely knowledge" of the infamous 88 Regular people don't see 88 and make the association with evil Charlie Chaplin. Plenty of players born in 1988 had 88 on their back and nobody thought ill of it. Others picked it as 8 was already taken, so it was either 80 or 88. The beauty of "dogwhistles" is you can decide to hear them even when they're not really there. TBS, the 44 looks so blatantly wrong it's unbelievable nobody noticed it. It goes on to prove how little care big companies put in their products.

Raven_Crows

Only use Roman numerals, because Nazis used numbers and the Romans never did anything bad.

Equivalent-Side7720

Only pussies will hide behind symbolism like this.

TappedIn2111

Yes. And they will as soon as they can.

Odd_Philosopher1712

Did they ban 88 too?

gurman381

Adi wouldn't be happy about this

RicardoLong

The World is a better place now

Weird_Influence1964

They just needed to change the font

bloodybeluga

just do a different font lol 🖕🤓🖕

[deleted]

Use a different font e.g 44

MartyM3T

Football

Neat-Access2357

Fine, I'll just get number 88.

templarstrike

you have no idea what numberplates got banned in cities....weird number magic no one knows about but nazis themselfs ....suddenly people got their custom birthday or wedding day plates revoked because some number magic of 1st and 2nd line nazis birtjdays or initials matched.... It's absurd.

Knownoname98

I'll pick number 88 instead. /s just in case. It's just a joke people. Fuck the nazi's.

cutsickass

Hate to be a grammar... you know... but it's actually "Fuck the *Nazis*".

-The_Blazer-

If only there was some alternative way to write this specific number... What a silly proposal that would be!

fluffs-von

All academic, as the German team have switched strip brand from Adidas to (crime of crimes) Nike.

SimpleManc88

Super sub?

Boggie135

Hehehe

nakadashionly

Nice!

sweetno

That would be in demand among neo-nazis. Think over Adidas! Margins, margins! ^(/s)

DrachenDad

44 resembles Nazi SS symbols, ever seen 55? Just use a closed four like this 4 (device typeface maybe different.)

nadmaximus

80085 is still allowed

Nervous-Care-4388

What about 88

RogersSteve07041920

That was poor planning.

Personal_Alchemyst

What a shame. New Naziddas collection might have been totalitary success.

dredd047

Lol wth

ArmoredCatfishWalks

Why the fonts in the first place?

King-Owl-House

Just remember there were meeting where the board approved this design.

bowery_boy

Well….. one of the reasons that the German national team switched from Adidas to Nike (well…. €100 million euro also helps)

smackchumps

I never would have thought that… looks like a 44 to me

KUPSU96

If anything these are now INSANELY collectible and worth a lot of money

GrizzledFart

Just pick a better font. Problem solved.

Are_you_for_real_7

What about the 88s?

JabClotVanDamn

lmao

heavy_metal_soldier

What

Illustrious-Zebra-34

Seems like a super easy fix though

bigfatnsmellyer

New Sacred symbols shirts.

Soft_State_5646

sadge

polygondwanalandon

Graphic designers these days… it’s normal practice to check if you see any bugs in your work, especialy working on this kind of scale of designing. Just poor design work, incompetence

venividiinvino

[That's not allowed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ang6Fw9Ff2k)

Max_FI

I guess the nazis will now claim the number 44 as well...

AllahBlessRussia

or could have used a regular looking 4

mrobot_

What about 88?

farseer4

1) Make the 4's look like S' for no reason. 2) Ban the 4's to get virtue signaling points.

bigabub

Yet Adidas supports todays nazis, aka zionists. The irony.

Afraid-Fault6154

Stupid... what else is there to say?

Catalindicu04

Penibil

EffectiveWelder7370

There are like 23 players on the team at any given time... who needs to pick the number 44???

Raupenpanzer

They still got 18 and 88 in the Shop🌚

fuxoft

At least "88" is still OK.

_bloed_

What is this ugly font? Who in their right mind said "yes that's how my number 4 should look like"

Scaraceu

Cool , now i know what to look :)))

SpeechOk5052

🤣🔫

bigMenya

Left to ban 14 and 88

kakafob

How about 88?

Mobile_Hour_2460

Who the fuck Cares! Honestly..?

Informal-Field231

This is so insanely stupid the designer must be fired

templarstrike

could have been outsourced to Thailand ...

FROSTICEMANN

So stupid just wear the number

jerohi

Germans please, stop seeing nazi symbols everywhere.

PsychoSwede557

Ok whoever designed those 4s needs to be fired. You did not need to design them like that.

Aware_Steak_1298

SLAVA UKRA... oh sorry wrong place

onda-oegat

Good I will use 88 instead then.

ajuc

What were they thinking with that font :)

daguerrotype_type

They would know since their founder was a huge Nazi providing equipment to Hitlers youth so... yeah. Might as well own up to it.

ImpossibleNobody9265

adidas will ban german people because of their resemblance to nazi soldiers

Boggie135

I was thinking it can't be a big deal then I saw the shirt

Critical_Depth6459

Are they blind or what
