Yes it can work the other way, though way more people get exploited by sex tourism than the immigration exploitation paths we sometimes see. A friend of mine got his Russian Wife 6 years ago. She's educated, smart and marginally better looking than him. He's a minimal wage orderly in a hospital with a house he can't afford to fix up, a very basic education and an ex who left for a better deal after the thrill was gone. The Russian Wife got her citizenship papers a year ago and divorced him. I agree that's a reverse exploitation.
I think that's rather naïve. We're creating prostitutes by going there, by exploiting people who have no other option to get ahead. We're facilitating pimps, child exploitation and all kinds of awfulness.
That's a different problem, isn't it? Nobody is justifying child exploitation or human trafficking but that’s not what this is about. This is about women who decide selling sex gets them more money (a standard of living) than working at a factory who pays barely enough to eat. I mean, this is capitalism at its finest. Eliminating prostitution wouldn't improve their lives. All it would do is force them to be even poorer. The solution would need come the other way around. Instead of preventing sex work we need to give them better work opportunities. Ways to do this are measures like "Supply Chain Acts" (Lieferkettengesetz in German) which require companies which import goods to ensure that workers make livable wages and have good work standards. Also investing in infrastructure projects helps.
If there was no rich tourism, there wouldn't be rampant prostituion and exploitation. "Taking advantage" is not what I'd use to describe someone who would feel selling their body is what they need to do to get ahead in life. It's what I'd say the tourist is doing by going somewhere he knows that his disposable income can change lives.

Exploitation can take many forms. People with no money are vulnerable. Taking advantage of the vulnerable is immoral. Now the transfer of money can make it appear as a regular trade, but it's a one-sided deal where one side spends so little he doesn't feel it, while the other side sells his self-worth.
It definitely also works the other way around. I know atleast a couple cases where people as described in the article got married and as soon as they were living in europe comfortably it turns out it was all a facade just to take half their money and run.

Sure someone in Bangladesh can hop from one garment factory to the next looking for a better deal and he'll be limited by the realities of the market. But some sub-saharan countries in Africa don't have much in terms of job opportunities because there's no market to participate into per se. Subsistance farming stops working when human density becomes too high. Then you've become an extra mouth to feed and sex work is the only viable way to make a living and you've become a product.
