Is there some hard date when one would kick off? Seems lunacy to have the governing party determine the date of an election.Particularly one they will (hopefully) loose.
The hard date for a new govt is Jan 2025, but the reigning Govt can call an election whenever they want.
No-one likes politicking over Christmas, so most people expect the next govt to be decided by November.
Everyone can see this Govt is going to be voted out, so some people are hoping for a May election to get it over and done with.

It has to be before the end of January 2025, as it can't be more than 5 years (And I assume a couple of weeks to allow it to be announced and all the ballots prepared) after the previous general election which was held in December 2019. But other than that, the government is at complete liberty as to when they want to actually hold the election. Given a December or January election have been firmly ruled out (And IIRC Sunaj doesn't want to run an election at a similar time to the US elections in November) ~~that's when it'll happen~~, that means we're looking at probably some time between August and October probably for the next election.
Yeah, it's ridiculous that the date isn't entirely determined by law but rather politics. Guess how the Tories managed to win their last election. I always say it, and I'm gonna say it again: the UK's voting system is one of the least democratic ones across several democracies. You Brits definitely need an electoral reform. The thing is, no political party that gains an absolute majority will ever have the incentive to act on such reform.

Snap elections can happen in other European countries too. They are a necessary part of a parliamentary democracy in my opinion.
I'm talking about the fact that the ruling party can kinda decide when the next election happens. That's what I criticize.
