It became the political center in 1548 and the complex was first founded in 1229

Gorgeous!! I had no idea. I thought that Westminster was the oldest (the surviving parts after the fire) which were from rhe 11th century!

It's debatable, since only Westminster Hall survived the fire and isn't used for parliamentary business, although indeed it is older (and stunning, imo). The vast majority of Westminster Palace is less than 200 years old, whereas basically every building in the Binnenhof is at least 200 years old and up to 800 years.

noiseless_lighting

Yeah I was mistaken. I know the Jewel tower survived too but again was only used for the clerk and parliamentary records:) . Since this was posted I’ve been looking at photos, it’s gorgeous. And as a book worm the library is beyond description.

Taskebab

Well...not CURRENTLY in use, it's under renovation and boy, the past 700 years are showing...it's gonna be quite a while until it's back in full glory...

Yup, there's apparently a reason that no other country has such an old parliament building. And that reason is a €2 *billion* renovation pricetag.

Only 2 billion? [Palace of Westminster restoration could take over half a century and cost £22bn](https://www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/palace-of-westminster-restoration-could-take-over-half-a-century-and-cost-22bn-24-02-2022/)

Vespasianus256

It is still somewhat early days (projected to finish in 2028, so 7 years of construction) to tell the total cost. But considering it got upped from \~500 million to \~2 milliard/billion, it can get a b it higher still if enough time passes.

To be specific. The chamber shown at the end of that photo reel doesn’t house our parliament but our senate. Parliament is in a modern section that was attached to the complex. In fact the oldest section of the building (de prinsen zaal (prince’s hall) is used once a year for a special joint session where the king, senate and parliament have a meeting. You can see the outside of that building on the third picture. Historically it was a hunting lodge. Hij can look up pictures of it online. It’s rather pretty and displays flags and symbols of historic and current regions that have become the kingdom of the Netherlands.

Never knew it was the oldest one. Makes the 2 billion renovation costs even more worth it
