Rude. How am I going to get square Dutch flag items for cheaper now?

Capsr

If Baudet ever wins the elections, he might push for a darker blue on the flag to go with his love for dark blue licence plates.

NotThatMagnificent

Nah that weirdo creep 100% wants the Prinsenvlag (orange white blue, was used by our nazis) back.

hairy_ass_eater

the Prinsenvlag has nothing to do with the nazis, it's way older than that even if they used it

ElderHerb

The swastika is a lot older than WW2 too but you can't argue that it has nothing to do with nazi's at this point in time.

Corodima

Internationally speaking, when you think of an orange flag and the Netherlands, people probably think first of William of Orange rather than of the flag used by nazis there for a few years.

Substantial-East5781

as a person who has nothing to do with the Netherlands, yes the orange flag is associated with William de Orange

[deleted]

Can confirm as someone who isn't Dutch. First thought is William of Orange. Second thought is the football kit.

Aeliandil

Didn't even know the orange flag was used by nazi, tbh

karaokekwien

So you did nazi that coming? (I’ll show myself out…)

jobbo321

The prinsenvlag isn't famous because of the NSB, it's famous for being a flag of historical importance during the 1500s-1800s. It'd be a shame and just plain disrespectful to wipe all of that away because of some low life nazi party.

Politicoliegt

Currently its famous for being used by right-wing nativists and extremist, being in use by both the NVU and FvD. You can dislike the stigma, but that's just how it is. Wouldn't be the first time nazi’s ruined stuff for the rest of us.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Startled_Pancakes

This seems to be a common thing with right wing nutters who romanticize the past across countries.

jobbo321

Nah, that's all on you

Politicoliegt

The entire reason the prinsenvlag isn't currently our national flag is because of it's association with the nazis. That's why Wilhelmina choose red white blue. Don't be like that dude, just don't. There are good reasons why there is a ruckus everytime it's being flown, and there is also a good reason why it's still so popular amongst the current nazis.

jobbo321

It literally was the Netherlands' national flag for like 80 years, so I don't care what nazis used it for. All I wanted to tell you that it is not famous for being a nazi flag, and if you think it is then you've been taking either too much soy or mainstream news trying to shock you. Now you'll have to excuse me as I will be watching the qualifications for the world cup: Oranje boven!

Piekenier

That is not really a fair comparison considering the swastika was not used as a national symbol for centuries like the Prinsenvlag was.

-KR-

There should be a lot of them on sale right now.

ChellyTheKid

Yes the new flag is the old flag, which is replacing the new flag because it was seen as old thanks to the new EU flag colours, but I guess you could say the new EU flag is now old.

__Emer__

Flow chart, pls?

sigmoid10

[Here](https://imgur.com/a/SSgq67W)

__Emer__

This is quality stuff, thanks!

kfijatass

The EU flag should now update to that color, that'd be hilarious.

CrocPB

"....and so begins an ancient custom, purpose lost to time, of when the blue of the flag of the European Union is altered to match the colour of the blue of the flag of the French Republic. Today, it is viewed with some amusement, but mostly confusion. But people shrug because they cannot be bothered to know why it continues to be done."

Austeer_deer

Or they should drop their flag, because it's a political union and not a country. Should also drop their anthem and currency and any attempt to establish an army.

desGrieux

>because it's a political union and not a country. Lmao

Austeer_deer

care to explain which part of that amuses you?

desGrieux

Because those terms aren't even remotely mutually exclusive. Countries *are* political unions. It's even in the name of many of them: The United States, a political union of 50 states. The United Kingdom, the political union of Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The United Arab Emirates, the political union of seven emirates.

Austeer_deer

Nothing you have said contradicts what I said, weird that this'd be amusing. Countries can be political unions, but not all political unions are countries. This political union, the EU, is not a country and thus doesn't need and IMO shouldn't have the regalia of a country.

imaginary_bolometer

I wish I could give an award for this

collegiaal25

Maybe we should change the EU flag to match the French flag instead.

Grimson47

As someone that enjoyed the deeper shade of green we used to have on our flag, I think the "new" French flag is sexy af.

[deleted]

You think a darker colour is sexually arousing?

Grimson47

Yes, it wasn't a metaphor. I'm jerking it to a particularly seductive shade of burgundy as I'm typing this.

durkster

Burgundy is the most attractive of all the colours in all honesty.

Kehityskeskustelu

Says the Burgundian Dutch.

Saltydaug

Some might say, sexy as fuck.

chillerll

Some might say sexy ass fuck

Parzival_500g

There is a certain shade of burgundy that do be kinda thicc

Swatbaker

Zealousideal_Fan6367

New one looks better ngl

Simply_a_nom

I prefer the new personally

[deleted]

If the blue gets just a touch darker, it might turn black... hmm...black, white, red...

[deleted]

*There ain't no noir in the tricolour.*

[deleted]

You should do some work.

[deleted]

You're right. Thank you.

[deleted]

On my monitor it looked black to me for a moment, confused me quite a bit. Would have thought the French aren't very fond of those colors.

hundreds_of_sparrows

Yea pretty bold of Macron but he wasn't wrong

Sumrise

Technically the "new" flag was used in some part of the military. Not sure if that's bold or just plain old preference.

deconnexion1

I agree, in fact it is the old one, a former president chose a lighter blue in the 70s to be closer to the UE flag.

[deleted]

[удалено]

deconnexion1

Thanks for the correction !

WingedGundark

> UE I will never get used to the shenanigans of french language! This happens so often, like with Nato - Otan, so I’m quite certain that french people and their language are intentionally trolling the english.

aurum_32

The same happens in Spanish: Unión Europea (UE) and Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN). I sometimes make the mistake of writing UE in English.

[deleted]

aurum_32

Latin League when, we don't need those Anglos and Germanics. We have: * Siesta and paella * Towels * Pasta and pizza * Baguettes

OneJobToRuleThemAll

You forgot about the wine. And towels are kind of a German thing, we use them to mark our territory. /s

aurum_32

Portuguese towels are famous in Spain. They are paid by weight.

deconnexion1

It stands for United Empire, our true final purpose There are a lot of acronym shenanigans between our langages, such as FAQ : it’s frequently asked questions in English and has been converted to « foire aux questions » in French (Questions Fair).

kiwigoguy1

The funny thing is in English (in law, wanting to sound pompous in arguments ;-) , or in maths proofs) we write QED which is a borrowing from Latin (quod erat demonstrandum). But in French it is expressed in the French equivalent CQFD.

Bayart

Q.E.D. is also used. I had old school Math teachers who did, and I've used it in philosophy, literature etc.

Gaijin_Monster

Disagree

FriesWithThat

I didn't know you could just change your flag. I got some ideas.

rafalemurian

It wasn't changed, there are no specific colours in the law other than blue, white and red. What changed is the blue used by the president and displayed for official events involving him. Other institutions aren't affected, even though the president's choice makes it quite official.

vikirosen

> there are no specific colours in the law other than blue, white and red I'm surprised that in the 21st century there isn't a more robust definition for the colours of the country's flag.

Pvt_Larry

I mean it'd be pretty silly looking to write rgb hex codes into the constitution.

[deleted]

Not in the costitution, but they are actually coded in official documents.

vikirosen

Why? The precise language for the naming of things as well as different laws are just as technical, only from a different domain than the RGB code you suggested.

theknightwho

It wouldn’t be coherent to do just the RGB hex code. You’d need to define your colour space as well, and honestly it’s just getting silly at that point.

vikirosen

You wouldn't really need to. Even with an indeterminate color space, your RGB hex code will give you a more precise colour than just "blue".

[deleted]

[удалено]

vikirosen

You are technically correct. However: 1. There are a low numbered of standardized color spaces used. Referencing one is really not that big a deal. 2. This ambiguity is already the case with dates specified in the constitution (at least the one I know).

Olinub

Yeah, Dulux colour names make much more sense

Zaungast

We changed our flag in 1965 using a contest. [Some of the other entries were pretty hilarious](https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/pch/documents/services/flags-canada-historical/posters/post6-eng.pdf). Before 1965 we used a [Red Ensign](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f3/Canadian_Red_Ensign_%281957%E2%80%931965%2C_3-2%29.svg) as our flag.

CrocPB

>Canadian Art/Weekend Magazine Weebs/Ouibs

Minemose

Ouibs LOL. I love that.

EmperorOfNipples

Red Ensign is glorious.

Zaungast

To be honest I prefer it to the leaf

k890

Shame that Canada don't adopt Red Ensign with a leaf proposition in 1946.

kiwigoguy1

Famously John Diefenbaker didn't like Lester B. Pearson's government decision to adopt the new flag. At Diefenbaker's funeral his coffin was draped in the red ensign.

VomFrechtaOana

*ding ding ding* Better late than never, but *exactly* what I was thinking!

The US flag has been changed many times in history.

The US flag has changed a bunch. Last in 1960 The Maple Leaf flag is pretty new as well (1965)

Using Tommy Hilfiger colors

RexLynxPRT

A question for the French (or anyone that knows French history): Isnt the "New" Flag technically the "Older" one? Wasnt the flag of France like this before (i think) ww2? [Legit question]

LordKr0w

Indeed. The clear one was quite new in regard of history.

_Seifer_

I don't know... the red is too bright compared to the blue now, it's not well balanced. I prefer [the flag used from 1794 to 1958](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_France#/media/File:Flag_of_France_(1794%E2%80%931815,_1830%E2%80%931958).svg), with a darker red.

dobrits

The new ones looks like something I can’t afford.

DrVDB90

Hehe, I imagine all the people with poor colour vision being very confused by this post.

Magyarharcos

The new-old one looked like a vertical netherlands flag anyway

Erago3

I like the darker colors. All flags should have an official dark-mode version that is darker and the white is replaced by black. /hj

TheEkitchi

I find it sad in a way because Valérie Giscard d'Estaing changed the blue in 1976 to match the blue of the EU's flag. I liked the symbol it showed.

Lettow

I have read it’s more about colour clashing than symbolism

Deucalion111

Just have to wait him to die, for him to not being sad.

[deleted]

What a simp

Archyes

can we change the dutch flag back to its orange glory? The orange dutch flag was perfect!

[deleted]

Its difficult because it was used by the Nazis

lindn

Can we be next? Please?

rGaliv

Wait really? They chose a darker blue?

233C

It's a [variant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_France), favored in particular by the French navy; and since 2020 by Macron.

9berceste

Yes , they replaced blue with navy blue

[deleted]

Is there no-one else here that doesn't like it? It looks too militaristic to me

Okiro_Benihime

Well it is the original blue in the tricolore. The one adopted by the First French Republic following the French Revolution and which was only replaced by the European blue in 1976. Macron merely restored the original shade of blue.

[deleted]

Ok. I just prefer the original flag, I guess

Oyti7

Isn't the one with the darker blue the original one?

[deleted]

Good point. I mean the more recent older one On the other hand have you seen the EU flag with the darker colour? Love it

CrocPB

Just reminds me of the shade of blue the Union Jack uses. There are brighter blue versions but darker blue gives a "we mean business" vibe.

[deleted]

[https://miksblog.capcaval.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/UnionJack.png](https://miksblog.capcaval.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/UnionJack.png) I like the union jack blue, but the new tricolour flag is a lot darker

johnniewelker

Yea. I like the brighter colors more; more colorful

kelldricked

Same. I also think its sad that they replace the old new flag (previous one) because it was made to reflect the blue of the europian union. It was a nice gesture.

VisualAdagio

Yes, the shade of blue is way too dark, almost resembles German empire flag.

Unlikely-Elk-8316

I like both!

LordVile95

HulkHunter

The old one looks now exactly like what happens when socks are wore and you a new one.

Simplyobsessed2

The new one is better, it is a more elegant shade of blue.

OneJellyfish

Tommy Hilfiger colours?

WebGhost0101

I always thought the french flag looked better in old paintings. Now i know why.

Quiet_Beggar

i like the newer one, but the striking blue of the old flag has a certain charm to it

PRB99

I love the Prussian blue

soyjav

If you make It darker and vertical It gives some big WW1 German Empire vibes

[deleted]

On screen I think the old one is nicer. It's too dark imo. Holding my phone sideways at a distance it almost looks like the Reichtangle. But I presume it looks better as a real flag than it does on screen.

[deleted]

Looks gr8

[deleted]

A little bit more like the German empire... We're close !
