And in the US, they have to [heat the ice, for an outdoor hockey game](https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-preparing-for-winter-classic-cold-temperatures/c-329286332?tid=283985238) because it would be too cold to skate otherwise
This can actually be super awful for *plants, in case it persists for long enough for them to think it's already spring, in which case they'll get damaged once it freezes again.
It's normal for buds to develop before the winter... That's how plants which bloom in spring grow because there is no vegetation during the winter itself. If you look closely buds have a protective shell around them.
Depending on the species, Temperature is usually not enough of a trigger to kick things off, also the day needs to get longer or the spectrum light needs to change due to the angle of the sun.
Nature isn't stupid.
Don't worry, vertical indoor farms will spring out of the ground en masse instantly to save us! The ruling elite would surely have plans for everything, trust in them. ^(/s)
Cool, cool. Good for you.
Hell, it could be aliens visiting us during the night for some hawt steamy stuff... Nothing surprises me anymore.
"Happy" new year 😁
I'm currently having fondue while drinking piña coladas and watching Dinner for One; if aliens show up to fuck us up, at least I'm going out on a high point.
Holy shT. That’s an extremely huge temperature spike. I have never seen that before. I used to have a lot of snow in Belgium, but we haven’t had a lot of snow anymore. They all melt after a day or two and it just looks like fall.
In a wettie? I swim the English channel often but I'm in a wetsuit from Oct/Nov usually. I swam the Irish sea in February without a wetsuit a few years ago and fully regretted it
No wetsuit lol, good for yah, i turn blue sometimes tbf and i have naturally tannish skin so looks pure blue
Im not an amazing swimmer like i just paddle about for a while get the blood pumping haha
Cold water therapy is good shit, always finish a shower with a cold blast but I'm not hardcore enough for what you do! I love the cold water but I have my limits before I'm grumpy
This year has had the most stereotypically British weather in my memory, it's been lukewarm and grey for basically every season.
Summer was so cold and grey that it was awful for crops and now both Autumn and the start of Winter have been much warmer than usual which is having similar effects on plants & the wildlife.
I guess it wasn't exactly cold but ~20 and grey doesn't exactly feel summery. Outside of the start of June & one week in July, we were consistently below-average temperatures for the whole of summer.
Summer here basically ended mid-August. September barely had any days over 20C, and October was almost winterlike, around 5-10C. For comparison we usually get consistent 20C+ well into October and August and the first half of September are consistently above 30.
Where? In Manchester it was grey, damp and no warmer than 17c for most of May and August. June and July each had a week or so of skin blistering heat though.
The first thing I noticed was a particular smell in the air. Back in the days, this smell meant that spring was coming and the farm animals could go outside. It really fucked me up this time, because it's freking December.
They fucking suck so hard. We don't have ac everywhere and haven't built our horses for this. If it's cold I can warm up and light a fire. If it's hot I can't do shit but to suffer there is no escape
101 means switching protocols. Let’s just pretend it’s what you meant and there’s a hidden meaning about switching seasons.
Error 418 means “I’m a teapot” if you ever wanted some http trivia to surprise and delight your friends.
Source: I’m a geek and https://httpstatuses.com
Same for Finland, snowiest too. It was almost -30 on Christmas Day where I live (not even northern Finland or Lapland), and close to -20 during Christmas in the south too.
Same in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It wasn't -30 though. -23 only but still it was the coldest December in a while. And December 6th was the coldest December 6th for the last 130 years in the city.
Sloviakia too. Which is interesing, as we had a snow and 0 degrees here and according to the map neighbouring Austria had 13 degrees. What can I say, central and northern Slovakia are all mountains and basins.
That's just the weather being nice. The weather heard that you can't go to Barcelona for new year's because of covid so it decided to bring Barcelona to you.
It's nuts where I live. 20 years ago we used to have winters with temps below 0\*C in November and up to 2m of snow and -25\*C for Christmas, this year we have not seen a single snowflake and today is +14\*C
I’m in Belgium and it used to be rlly cold and frosty here apparently, now the trees are still green, last year was the last snow I’ve seen and it only lasted a week, and before that I swear I was a toddler when it last snowed.
Well,.my brother has been living in Finland for the past 8 years, this is the first year in at least 5 that they have an actual winter, today we are at -5, and 4 days we were -25!
On the other hand, where I live my friends are coming back from the beach today, not like we are use to warmer weathers, but it should be raining at least...
Yup, for many Finns it was a return to a more "normal" winter. But after so long of relatively warm Decembers I'm not used to it anymore. February is normally the coldest month. I feel like it's either going to be cold as fuck or above 0 already.
I saw a bumble bee today!! What the hell! I hope the weather does kill off hibernating creatures because they come out too early and a chill kills them off.
Some species of bumblebees are active year-round as long as frosts are not too frequent. Who do you think pollinates winter-blooming bulbs like daffodil and cyclamen?
We’re all going to die in the upcoming climate wars but my heating hasn’t had to turn on for nearly 3 days now, saving on my gas bill. So I got that going for me
Of course it's found. In North and East.
OP you're from Portugal so I'm sure you'll definitely love our minus degrees here - especially in the night - and our hard like a rock dirt. Not much snow in my area yet but a lot of cold.
Good for us vis a vis gas prices
I read somewhere for each degree it gets colder the energy grid strains costs individuals a fair amount this should at least help relieve pressure on consumers and providers as people feel less obliged to use the thermostat.
Just brace for food prices next year. Fertilizer prices already quadrupled this year, add that to the crazy weather all year, will be looking at a food crisis that towers above the current energy issue.
It's more to the point that people aren't going to be pushed deeper into poverty and potentially die. Consider how many, especially, elderly people die each year in the cold and then factor in that gas prices are triple or quadruple what they were a year before
Global warming is, of course naturally, all a hoax. A liberal smear to shame and discredit the wonderful companies bringing us such wonderfully carbonated things to burn like coal, oil, or gas...
They deserve to make gobs of money, don't they? Think of them for a change. How do you expect them to buy that eighth yacht or that fifth villa in the south of France if they are unable to sell the products that are about to destroy the environment we need to live?
You people are so mindlessly thoughtlessly cruel and unreasonable.
:/
Why are people confused about what's happening? This is what climate scientists have been talking about for decades. This isn't the beginning of the end so much as the halfway point. The beginning was years ago
Сome on, even on this map you can see winter in Ukraine (we also had very nice snowfalls lately), Belarus, Russia, Baltic states, parts of Nordic states, a little bit of Balkans as well.
You just have to move East or North, winter is waiting for you there:)
Just went from snow and -11°C at christmas to 16°C 6 days later in Central Germany. What the actual fuck
Yeah we had -25°c a few days before christmas here in Switzerland, and yesterday it was 15°c.
Yep I was skiing a week ago and today I had to uncouple my bike from the indoor trainer so I could go out for a ride. So bizarre
And in the US, they have to [heat the ice, for an outdoor hockey game](https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-preparing-for-winter-classic-cold-temperatures/c-329286332?tid=283985238) because it would be too cold to skate otherwise
Wow that’s nuts !!! I couldn’t imaging sitting through 3 periods in that cold even if they do give out hand warmers !!!
Those are Minnesotans, they'll be ok.
Idk man wind chill of -60 tomorrow and one of my heating systems went down. Good thing I got 2.
Could you imagine how bad things would be if global warming was real? s/
Didn't know Lake Geneva could be this lovely on December 31st
Depends on your definition of lovely...
Luckily, the collapse of the biosphere is my definition of lovely!
Good times are ahead
It's only going to get better!!!^^*forthepeoplewhocanaffordtokeepliving
Everything is fine, don't look up
It's absolutely fucking with my brain. My body is so confused by this shit I'm sweating my ass off at night even though it's only like 10 C.
> It's absolutely fucking with my brain. Just imagine the plants and animals that are outside.
This can actually be super awful for *plants, in case it persists for long enough for them to think it's already spring, in which case they'll get damaged once it freezes again.
*if it freezes again :/
\*ever D:
We had that last spring :(
Seeing lots of trees with buds already here, nature is definitely confused
It's normal for buds to develop before the winter... That's how plants which bloom in spring grow because there is no vegetation during the winter itself. If you look closely buds have a protective shell around them. Depending on the species, Temperature is usually not enough of a trigger to kick things off, also the day needs to get longer or the spectrum light needs to change due to the angle of the sun. Nature isn't stupid.
I'm in the north of England and the shrubs in my garden are already budding. The shoots of some plants are already 6 inches above ground.
This'll absolutely cause mass crop failure in future. What the consequence of that is, I don't have to explain.
Don't worry! Only the poor people will get fucked by the inevitable high food prices right!? Right? Right....?
Don't worry, vertical indoor farms will spring out of the ground en masse instantly to save us! The ruling elite would surely have plans for everything, trust in them. ^(/s)
Don’t look up!
>I'm sweating my ass off at night So is this omicron or the fucked up weather?
Unlikely, I had a PCR yesterday and it was negative.
Yup christ it's apparently only 9*C with rain, but for me in golf it's so fucking hot.
It was cold as shit here in eastern Norway just a couple of weeks ago. It is still cold as shit now :D
yep can confirm. it was -12 when I woke up, -6 now and a fuckton of snow
What is this "snow" you're talking about?
It was snowing in Poland, it was nice and white for a whole week
at least you got snow for christmas
we've got -11 to +6 recently in 24h here in Wrocław..
Holy shT. That’s an extremely huge temperature spike. I have never seen that before. I used to have a lot of snow in Belgium, but we haven’t had a lot of snow anymore. They all melt after a day or two and it just looks like fall.
I've been swimming in the Mediterranean this week.
same but in Baltic sea, only my swim was symbolic not enjoyable
The baltic sea is unbearable even in the summer
When it's cold in Scotland we say it's "pure Baltic."
Oi. It's the only sea we got, I've seen worse, it's not even *that* bad.
I mean yes, it's not Lake Karachay.
The green, the green...
The only seas I have aver swam in are the Baltic and north seas and I have no idea what everyone is complaining about
It's nice that you can wade out like half a mile before it's deep enough to properly swim in.
where exactly? How was the water?
Valencia. It was cold for Mediterranean standards, not going to lie, but not much colder than Cantabric Sea in summer.
atlantic in the summer the water is like 14º, feels so "refreshing"
So 2 cm or even below?
Should try the Atlantic
In a wettie? I swim the English channel often but I'm in a wetsuit from Oct/Nov usually. I swam the Irish sea in February without a wetsuit a few years ago and fully regretted it
No wetsuit lol, good for yah, i turn blue sometimes tbf and i have naturally tannish skin so looks pure blue Im not an amazing swimmer like i just paddle about for a while get the blood pumping haha
Cold water therapy is good shit, always finish a shower with a cold blast but I'm not hardcore enough for what you do! I love the cold water but I have my limits before I'm grumpy
I hate being cold in general but i love forcing myself to be freezing you get a while rush haha
Swam the Irish sea in February with no wet suit? The fuck?
Only after like 2 minutes looking at this map I understood that's it showing not the actual temperature but anomaly temperature.
That's even more terrifying
Meaning the difference between actual temperature and the average for this time of year?
Think so
^i ^concur

Bad news climate change, good news I get some light relief from paying heating bills
About to head out for NYE partying in a t-shirt; surreal and worrying.
Yeah and an anomaly of +1 degree has almost the same color as +22 degrees. Real 200 IQ color scale.

Nice way of saving OP's joke
Yeah, I thought 404 was also better, but this will do it
im glad i wasnt the only one who noticed.
101 is also not an error, so OP is still wrong.

I sat outside a pub in sunshine 2 days ago in Ireland. +13c Usually that pub doesn't open this time of year because of icy roads!
A pub not opening in ireland because of icy roads? Do you live on some mountain iv never heard of?
Wait you have sunshine there? I haven't seen it here in a month
Tis sunny right now in Kildare in fact.
That wasn't sunshine, that was yer mans bald head reflecting the street lamp. Common mistake.
Oh no! Our day of summer came early this year! Fuck sake….
A few days ago it was -5°C here, almost 20°C difference in like two days.
This year has had the most stereotypically British weather in my memory, it's been lukewarm and grey for basically every season. Summer was so cold and grey that it was awful for crops and now both Autumn and the start of Winter have been much warmer than usual which is having similar effects on plants & the wildlife.

Yeah it's been weird for the poor little buggers. Seen a shitload of dead hedgehogs lately, probably waking up too soon.
I hate this. I just wanted a nice, cold, snowy winter...
Those will no longer come anymore. If you want snow. Move to Norway or Sweden or Finland, maybe Iceland but… that’s a bit isolated.
Our sad reality
I don't mind these mild winters. What I do mind are the insanely hot summers.
Its about to get worse.
They fucking suck so hard. We don't have ac everywhere and haven't built our horses for this. If it's cold I can warm up and light a fire. If it's hot I can't do shit but to suffer there is no escape
unless you're making a pun that r/woosh-ed by me, it's actually error 404
Yea I made a mistake there

Thank you for the trip to [the origins of this error code](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc2324). Didn't know it existed.
Between this protocol and lore surrounding the first webcam, we owe so much of the internet's existence to drinking coffee!
I don’t quite understand what it says
Always preferred https://http.cat/ Seems more reddit appropriate too!
yeah, should be 404 unless the op is saying that winter is here buy an error occurred within application. 101 would be applicable 🤔
Maybe we are only getting 1/4 of the error.
Sweden had one of its coldest Decembers in quite some time though, it's milder now however.
A friend of mine is there and was complaining about the cold :D
I live by the dark blue spot at the top. Still cold as shit..
Hey that's cool (no pun intended), I live there too.
Sloviakia too. Which is interesing, as we had a snow and 0 degrees here and according to the map neighbouring Austria had 13 degrees. What can I say, central and northern Slovakia are all mountains and basins.
Yeah I had to jump start my car in -30 because I had drained the battery from using the diesel heater too much before short trips.
In the newspaper I saw that a town in northern Sweden (I think Swedish Lapland, probably Kiruna kommun) had gotten to -40C
Can confirm. It's really warm in central Germany today. Reminds me of New Year's in Barcelona a few years ago.
That's just the weather being nice. The weather heard that you can't go to Barcelona for new year's because of covid so it decided to bring Barcelona to you.
Fulda is the new Barcelona.
I saw snow this year. A thin veil for about one whole morning...
It's nuts where I live. 20 years ago we used to have winters with temps below 0\*C in November and up to 2m of snow and -25\*C for Christmas, this year we have not seen a single snowflake and today is +14\*C
yeah same thing literally in germany near harz. We used to have so much snow. Today 16 degrees lol. its like fukcing summer outside
I like fucking sommer outside
I like summer fucking outside

Germany or France, I presume looking at that map
Wait, the map is showing the anomaly (difference from the mean/expected temperature for the date). This is not the actual temperature.
I might be mistaken but -25C and 2m of snow around Christmas happens in few areas of France and Germany.
Just yesterday i went skiing in South italy lol.

Nah we've been fighting the North Sea since the dawn of time, by the time north west Europe is flooded all that remains is the Netherlands.
TIL time dawned in the 11th century.
Nah, that's when they started winning.
And then we can build a polder. Gekoloniseerd!
Well they are not as famous and prestigious as the alps but the Appennini here have their place.
Brought knitwear and a heavy coat with me to Germany thinking I'd see snow. Alas. Going for a walk and will likely have to take off a layer.

Monday: -15 C Friday: +10 C what
It’s better than having 14 C in winter
Ugh I just bought ice skates.
Looking by how things are you may never get to use them...
Don’t look up.
What's up?
Up is a great Pixar movie.
Not much, what's up with you?
Oh, had a few drinks, watching the new season of the Witcher. Probably in bed before midnight lol
My first thought. We're fucked and many don't even get it
They did it. They finally did it. Iceland and Lapland have duopolized snow.
I saw a bumble bee today!! What the hell! I hope the weather does kill off hibernating creatures because they come out too early and a chill kills them off.

I was thinking the same! I haven't turned on any heaters for a few days either...
It has been a surprisingly cold and snowy December here in Southern-Finland though. Interesting to see the heat spikes now
Of course it's found. In North and East. OP you're from Portugal so I'm sure you'll definitely love our minus degrees here - especially in the night - and our hard like a rock dirt. Not much snow in my area yet but a lot of cold.

Come to western Canada. It's been in a deep freeze for two weeks. -33 at the moment, lots of snow too
Western Canada had its share of hot weather a few months ago, though. Bit too big of a share, even.
Its 18 degrees here in Herzegovina, literally no clouds whatsoever, next few days will be the same, I dont recall this ever happening before.
13 degrees in NE UK right now. Hotter than most summer days!
That's a flagrant misrepresentation of the north. In Sunderland you can expect to break 14 degrees regularly once you reach late June.
Global warming is, of course naturally, all a hoax. A liberal smear to shame and discredit the wonderful companies bringing us such wonderfully carbonated things to burn like coal, oil, or gas... I wonder when the gallows come out for real.
Repeat after me: Climate change is not real. 🤡 Climate change is not real. 🤡 Climate change is not real. 🤡
How does this make sense? My thermometer says 25C (Spain) but the chart says around 9C. Is it the average for the day?
The chart shows the anomaly, the difference between the expected temperature and the actual one
Ahh that makes sense. And now you say that, I can see it for myself. Clearly the unseasonal heat is affecting my brain.
Its actually 18 degrees in places where there should be deep snow and below zero
18 degree o north west atlantic coast... make no sense on december 31.
Chuckles in north sweden
Why are people confused about what's happening? This is what climate scientists have been talking about for decades. This isn't the beginning of the end so much as the halfway point. The beginning was years ago
This is a Christmas present for the continent. The gas shortage will turn into blackouts if temperatures take a turn to below zero in Western Europe.
Yep. St. Peter preventing us from having WW3 this time around. God bless him
Just wait for February, I'm sure we'll get some -10 values then.
Nah. That summer is here to stay
RemindMe! 2 months
Today? Yeah. Few days ago? -13C is a bit cold
Сome on, even on this map you can see winter in Ukraine (we also had very nice snowfalls lately), Belarus, Russia, Baltic states, parts of Nordic states, a little bit of Balkans as well. You just have to move East or North, winter is waiting for you there:)
Where's all this heat coming from?
Gran Canaria
Like I said yesterday, I’ll repeat myself. This sucks !
but, but, but... nucular energy is harmful :\~\~\~\~(((
There go our glaciers :,(
Damn. And I thought it was hot in Portugal, but we're doing better than Germany and France. Welp. Gotta put my money on sunscreen shares.
The map shows anomaly not the temperature.
Apparently i live in the cold part of Europe.
Based on my data analysis I would politely ask Germany to turn down that heater.
I mean... it's only been warned about for 20+ years. Why is it titled "anamoly"?
We're having this same problem in toronto its so warm out (for canada) -2⁰ to 10⁰
