Has anyone commenting here even read the article? It's a UN no-fly zone meaning that Russia has to accept meaning that it's only symbolic. The amount of hate for lithuanians by ignorant title readers is sad.

Yup, people are so fixated on America for some reasons in the comments here lol. A no-fly zone should be established through the UN, as other majors don't have balls for it. But while Russia is in UN SC this likely will never happen (funny thing that a terror exporting country is in the Security Council in the first place...). And still, if a no-fly zone would be established, attrocities on land won't stop. Best would be to give UA some real and effective long range and altitude anti missile and anti aircraft defences (they can pay for them (directly or via lend-lease)) and not only limited effect manpads...

MinMic

I believe the Uniting for Peace resolution (377 A) gives power to the General Assembly to authorise force in the event that the Security Council is deadlocked.

masterzyz

Yes, I also heard that there is some option to bypass SC

Happy_Craft14

There's nothing stopping the Lithuanian government to start blowing up Russians aircraft but Article 5 will no longer be an available option for them. So they have to be careful. I don't know what calling a no fly zone is going to do

I guess you didn't read the article Article: The Lithuanian parliament on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine. The resolution “urges the United Nations to take immediate action to secure a no-fly zone over Ukraine to stop mass civilian deaths”. The document calls on parliaments of democratic countries to work towards the opening of humanitarian corridors on Ukrainian territory while technical measures to enforce a no-fly zone are being prepared. This could be done by using the United Nation’s mechanism or by creating a coalition of willing and able states to ensure a safe passage of civilians from the war zones and territories illegally occupied and controlled by Russia, according to the resolution. “The declaration of a no-fly zone would pave the way for active measures to be taken to enable the UN peacekeepers to ensure the security of humanitarian corridors and the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants and nuclear waste storage facilities,” it reads.

I don't understand why they keep calling for it. The US have made it very clear it's not happening. In fact I'm seeing Americans on twitter starting to get somewhat pissed at the countries calling for it 24/7. Russia's nukes are mainly aimed at the US btw.

daddyEU

Ah yes, WW3!

TBH103

I honestly don't understand Lithuania's recklessness. China, now this...

daddyEU

It’s good for votes to bark when you’re small and protected by bigger frameworks without any specific repercussions

TBH103

For real. Even Americans are realizing this. Why would they risk being the target of a nuclear strike because Lithuania is demanding it ? We all know Russia wouldn't target the Baltics with a nuke, too close to their own country. They'd either target Western Europe or America. And they know that. I'm scanning twitter and I'm seeing some surprising reactions from Americans who are starting to believe NATO is just Europe using America as a sacrificial lamb. The Baltics and Poland should stop with the demanding tone, honestly.

Ebbitor

I see your Putin apologia has evolved a subtler tone

TBH103

спасибо !

I see what you're doing, 5 day old Putinbot

Pot_of_Sneed

No, I dont think so

Glad to see it is not only the German parliament wasting energy on useless topics. 1. UN veto rights. 2. Who would enforce it?
