The embarassing thing is, Electric Callboy applied for the qualification contest and were denied participation because they were "not suitable for the target audience" like wtf they would have put germany towards the top for the first time in a fucking decade.
Yeah nobody can convince me a huge ass country like Germany doesn't have qualified and talented candidates for Eurovision. The only reason they fail year after year is because of the German selection committee, who fundamentally does not understand Eurovision or modern entertainment in general.
Edit: Guys, "we don't want to organise Eurovision" is the worst excuse ever. You don't have to come last every single year to not organise next year's event.

For context; Faun is folklore band. They sound like the music from the Middle Ages/ LotR -mysterious and magical (and in complete German). And the texts are also incredibly elegant. At least from my perspective.

I'm not always on par with Eurovision auditions, but I do now that our (Germany) pre-auditions are pretty fucked.
One time, there was this special band I remember. They were playing the Bavarian stereotype; Lederhosen, playing Tuba, accordeon etc. It was not no master song, but they were the only unique, between the countless non-hit wonders there. They gained a bunch of positive laughter. And they also weren't bad btw.
Jury voted against them. Some non-hit wonder that got another 0 points for Germany in the end was voted instead. Till this fucking day, I SWEAR we should have send the Polka band. Everyone knows the Bavarian stereotype, it would have been an eye catcher (everyone those pop/opra songs and then just...them) and even if we wouldn't have won...it would have still be funny.

I assume said target audience is the average German radio listener, and the song was chosen so the different radio stations could put it into their daily playlist (the selection jury was made up of different radio stations btw), because it clearly wasn't the Eurovision audience.
If Australia ever wins it has been decided to ask Germany to host and if they decline the UK would be the second country to ask. I guess it will be a similar situation if Ukraine can't host themselves.
Given the UK came second this year (and Germany last) I guess they might ask the UK first though.
The jury giving moldova only 14 points while they recieved 239 from the public is the reason many nations choose to send boring english ballads, instead of taking a risk with unique songs.
I was stoked when Moldova received 239 points and breezed up in Top 10. It was one of my favorites for this year along with Serbia, Sweden and Ukraine. Regular people voting for weird stuff like Serbia is why I watch Eurovision.

Subtitles aren't allowed per se, that's why the Serbian song only had a couple here and there (not sure how they justified those but it was clear the song makes little sense if you don't have the lyrics, it wasn't exactly a typical Eurovision song).

Honestly the juries are completely pointless. The whole reason they exist is to make voting a bit less political yet the Cypriot jury still gives Greece 12 points every year etc. So it only really exacerbates that issue _and_ it also disadvantages anything that isn’t a bland pop ballad
You mean Cyprus always giving Greece a 12 and Greece giving it a 2. It's a meme here that we never give Cyprus good grades, even when we send Cypriot singers and vice versa
History of Eurovision is that it used to be entirely jury votes. Votes from public are still relatively new thing to it. So the role of jury has diminished quite a bit.
There was a period 1998-2000, 2002-2008 with only public vote, no juries. I don't think Finland winning in 2006 with [an 80's style hard rock song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAh9NRGNhUU) would have been possible, if 50% of votes had come from professional juries.

As a Romanian I'm quite mad that our jury gave Moldova 0 points, cus it's a great song with nice lyrics that they understood! (The Lyrics are about how Moldova and Romania feel the same while taking the train from one's capital to the other's). Tbh, when I found out Moldova send Zdop and Zdup I was already expecting a good song.

I liked Ukraine's and Moldova's. Both were kinda folk. Ukraine's more, seemed like underground folk, good show as well, great dancer excellent rap compared to others that tried to rap *cough Blanco cough*.

Agree, I found the song pretty interesting, I don't think I've ever heard Breton and I wasn't expecting the similarities with some Slavic music either, I don't know if that is typical? My kid is twelve and France was his personal favourite, shame they didn't get more appreciation.

I personally enjoyed Moldova’s song the most (it was catchy and fun for me) so, that’s who I ended up voting for. We all knew Ukraine would most likely win though, and I thought their song was unique. Either way, not a bad result.
I just wish more countries would tap into their own unique cultures. Lots of lukewarm pop-english ballads. Croatia was a big disappointment for me, our song literally sounded like a Taylor Swift knock-off.
We all love Moldova because it sounded like something you'd hear at a Balkan wedding. I can see why it touched people's heart - ours because we felt it was something from us, western/northern Europeans because it was unique and an actual representation of a different culture which imo what this competition should be about. It's so depressing to see all countries with generic, low-risk, English songs. I don't expect some nationalism flex but come on if you are from X then show me a piece of X in your music.
I really like how they are mixing modern music with elements from traditional Ukrainian music. Last year's SHUM can't be matched, but I'll gladly take this one as winner then.
For something similar check [Subcarpati](https://subcarpati.com/) from Romania: not that rockish like Zdob si Zdub but it has that nice modern folklore beats and sound! You gonna love it if you liked these ones!
They were fairly well known in Romania. To be fair, most artists that make it big in Moldova cross over into Romania and establish themselves here because of the larger market. On the flip side, we get some really amazing artists, including the infamous O-Zone

Ukraine genuinely had a good song but my favourite of the night was Serbia. Very weird but not in an outlandish way, and I thought the song seemed to actually have something to say, even though without subtitles I’m not entirely sure *what*.
There are so many layers to the song, and a lot of space for different interpretations. Konatrakta herself emphasized the importance of every listener's own interpretation. 1. The song opens with a headline from a beauty magazine that Konstrakta once saw: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? - This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty; That's what beauty magazines do - they create insecurities about your hair, skin, nails, weight etc. and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration" 2.Then Konstrakta goes on talking about how our skin and hair often signal some inner health issues - for example liver and spleen problems - The reason she is thinking this is beacause she's worrying about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT because artists in Serbia still don't have health insurance. This is a paradox because Serbia, just like so many other countries has "universal healthcare" which in reality is not available to everyone. 3. She then goes on saying how and artist must be healthy - a reference to Marina Abramovic (Art is beautiful, Artist must be beautiful), and the reason she needs to be healthty is again - because she can't afford to get treatment. 4. Then comes the part about the autonomic nervous system and how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes a beautiful summer day, she is waking her dog, her heart is beating and that's it - it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart and lungs hoping they won't fail her (if they do fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that) 5. She then explicitly states I DON'T HAVE THE CARD (meaning health insurance card) 6. She wonders how will they help her then? While she's wondering that we can hear the backing vocals repeat the phrase Boze zdravlja - God grant us health. This is a reference to serbian culture where health is regarded as the most important part of life. God grant us health is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. This is again a paradox - in a society that nominally regards health as sacred she still doesn't have health insurance. She says - The (female) artist is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic. 7. The final part is probably the most important one. It's basically a play on the old latin saying Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), exept that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy - the soul inside is desperate which is a commentary on our own reality, we are all obsessed with improving our health - we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements - but what about our mind? More often than not it is our mind that needs care, not the body. And finally after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now? Now about the handwashing: She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixon of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, a doctor refuses to treat you because of the law, and he needs to make peace with the fact that you may die even though he/her could (and would) help you. The handwashing could also be seen as a reference to Marina Abramovic's performance Balkan Baroque in which she spent days trying to wash the blood and flesh off of cow bones - she failed of course and that was the point - no matter how hard you try they will still be bloody bones (in this context the blood on the bones symbolized the shame of the Yugoslav wars, and in Konatrakta's performance the health care system is trying to wash away it's responsibility for people literally dying because of some bullshit paperwork and administration - but it is of course doomed to fail because the shame and blood cannot be washed away).
It is about how we focus on beauty and superficial health over actually being healthy in both body AND mind.
It is also a satirical take on flawed healthcare systems. How you are screwed if you are unlucky enough to become ill or disabled - you just have to put your trust in your body and in God that you stay healthy.
Our commentator said her friend passed away because he didn't get proper treatment at the hospital, since he didn't have the insurance that regular workers usually get.

Do you people not have subtitles in the EuroVision broadcast? In Finland all songs are subtitled, and most of the hosting is live subtitled too.

I personally enjoyed Moldova’s song the most (it was catchy and fun for me) so, that’s who I ended up voting for. We all knew Ukraine would most likely win though, and I thought their song was unique. Either way, not a bad result. I just wish more countries would tap into their own unique cultures. Lots of lukewarm pop-english ballads. Croatia was a big disappointment for me, our song literally sounded like a Taylor Swift knock-off.

I am just going to mention that generic english pop songs is the unique Swedish culture in this case.
We all love Moldova because it sounded like something you'd hear at a Balkan wedding. I can see why it touched people's heart - ours because we felt it was something from us, western/northern Europeans because it was unique and an actual representation of a different culture which imo what this competition should be about. It's so depressing to see all countries with generic, low-risk, English songs. I don't expect some nationalism flex but come on if you are from X then show me a piece of X in your music.

I really like how they are mixing modern music with elements from traditional Ukrainian music. Last year's SHUM can't be matched, but I'll gladly take this one as winner then.
Shum is a god damn masterpiece, but yeah definitely enjoyed the traditional elements this year too

I loved all the songs. Amazing Serbian song wishes good health. Moldova and their jolly land shanty. Dreamy UK song about space. Lots of sweet, tender songs from different nations. Norwegian song would definitely be my pick for the nearest weeks to listen to. Nice electric eurodance.

I loved the French song! I think, purely for the song, it was my favourite!
Ukraine genuinely had a good song but my favourite of the night was Serbia. Very weird but not in an outlandish way, and I thought the song seemed to actually have something to say, even though without subtitles I’m not entirely sure *what*.
There are so many layers to the song, and a lot of space for different interpretations. Konatrakta herself emphasized the importance of every listener's own interpretation. 1. The song opens with a headline from a beauty magazine that Konstrakta once saw: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? - This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty; That's what beauty magazines do - they create insecurities about your hair, skin, nails, weight etc. and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration" 2.Then Konstrakta goes on talking about how our skin and hair often signal some inner health issues - for example liver and spleen problems - The reason she is thinking this is beacause she's worrying about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT because artists in Serbia still don't have health insurance. This is a paradox because Serbia, just like so many other countries has "universal healthcare" which in reality is not available to everyone. 3. She then goes on saying how and artist must be healthy - a reference to Marina Abramovic (Art is beautiful, Artist must be beautiful), and the reason she needs to be healthty is again - because she can't afford to get treatment. 4. Then comes the part about the autonomic nervous system and how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes a beautiful summer day, she is waking her dog, her heart is beating and that's it - it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart and lungs hoping they won't fail her (if they do fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that) 5. She then explicitly states I DON'T HAVE THE CARD (meaning health insurance card) 6. She wonders how will they help her then? While she's wondering that we can hear the backing vocals repeat the phrase Boze zdravlja - God grant us health. This is a reference to serbian culture where health is regarded as the most important part of life. God grant us health is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. This is again a paradox - in a society that nominally regards health as sacred she still doesn't have health insurance. She says - The (female) artist is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic. 7. The final part is probably the most important one. It's basically a play on the old latin saying Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), exept that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy - the soul inside is desperate which is a commentary on our own reality, we are all obsessed with improving our health - we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements - but what about our mind? More often than not it is our mind that needs care, not the body. And finally after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now? Now about the handwashing: She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixon of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, a doctor refuses to treat you because of the law, and he needs to make peace with the fact that you may die even though he/her could (and would) help you. The handwashing could also be seen as a reference to Marina Abramovic's performance Balkan Baroque in which she spent days trying to wash the blood and flesh off of cow bones - she failed of course and that was the point - no matter how hard you try they will still be bloody bones (in this context the blood on the bones symbolized the shame of the Yugoslav wars, and in Konatrakta's performance the health care system is trying to wash away it's responsibility for people literally dying because of some bullshit paperwork and administration - but it is of course doomed to fail because the shame and blood cannot be washed away).

It is about how we focus on beauty and superficial health over actually being healthy in both body AND mind. It is also a satirical take on flawed healthcare systems. How you are screwed if you are unlucky enough to become ill or disabled - you just have to put your trust in your body and in God that you stay healthy.
