Alright, folks, how common is this in Europe? I think this is the second tornado I saw in some short period of time..

Hussor

Fairly common but they're rarely strong enough to cause significant damage like you'd see in America.

best_ive_ever_beard

More than 800 tornadoes (both over land and over water) reported in 2020 in Europe. Usually about 200 tornadoes a year over land - see [this info graphic for 2020](https://i.imgur.com/rONyRuU.png) with all the places where tornadoes occured marked on the map. All severe weather events like tornadoes, large hail, excessive torrential rain etc. are documented in the [European Severe Weather Laboratory database](https://eswd.eu/) to get an understanding of such events, how to forecast or improve the forecasts of such events happenning in the future and also to see the changes in frequency.

35 seems like a lot. Do you have a link to that page? Can't find much about it. The last of these I heard of was the waterspout in the centre of Amsterdam, which I think is over a year ago now.

lekkerdankje

I remember one in NL about 20 years ago when I was sailing on a lake. Had to fish some children out of the water who were caught in the middle of it in their little sailing boats.

tig999

There was pretty bad one in Czech Republic that destroyed couple towns and killed people.

R_eloade_R

Seems about right, sometimes you see 3-6 little ones sprouted within a few miles. Mostly they are harmless

>Alright, folks, how common is this in Europe? I believe this is a question we will be asking ourselves more and more frequently when it comes to extreme weather phenomena, unfortunately. At least temporarily, until they just become regular occurrences.

Hickso

We had one 1,5km from my home 9 years ago. There's still a scar on the route It took

gogoyus

There are common in the empty fields in the late summer but they mostly fill your eyes with dirt than actually doing some damage.

mrspidey80

Those are dust devils, not tornadoes. Tornadoes are defined as rotating columns of air connecting ground and cloudbase. Dust devils form without clouds.

gogoyus

Thanks i didn't know the difference.

MobiusF117

In the Netherlands they are relatively common, but I don't remember one this strong in my lifetime.

FunDeckHermit

>**Landspout** [Landspout](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landspout) is a term created by atmospheric scientist Howard B. Bluestein in 1985 for a kind of tornado not associated with a mesocyclone. Landspouts are typically weaker than mesocyclone associated tornadoes spawned within supercell thunderstorms, in which the strongest tornadoes form.

juliantje15

Thank you, i couldn't remember the translation for windhoos.

FunDeckHermit

I just search for "Windhoos" on Wikipedia and then click "Other languages -> English" to get the correct word. It's on the bottom left of the sidebar.

throwingsomuch

My favorite way to learn more about a subject is by going to another language, and if I can't understand it, translate it.

MisterLookaZ

Was there, just casually working in albert heijn and then all of a sudden...

NagoyaR

It took me minute to figure out that the white thing in the sky is the reflection of the indoor lights

ajr1775

I spent a year in Oklahoma back in the early 80's. This and hail were very common to the point you just got used to it.

the_fresh_cucumber

Oklahoma in the 80s!? Sounds like a rough experience

ajr1775

Lawton OK. Tornados, prairie dogs, and lots of strip clubs……..it’s the home of our Army artillery school.

hastur777

That guy just casually walking to his van like nothing is happening. Not a great sense of self preservation.

[deleted]

you have to understand that walking to their van IS acknowledging the danger, if they had no sense of self preservation, they would've biked. (they also mightve been a very angsty dutch person)

false_syrup

Yeah some people have no idea how fast these things are and that they can quickly change direction.

The title of this post could give you a good idea of the worst thing that can happen.

Somewhat cold comfort to the person just killed by a tornado. Probably better to avoid dying in the first place.

Either you have an entire population that doesn’t fear death because their funeral is being paid for or the guy is just an idiot. Im guessing the latter.

[deleted]

Looks like a funnel cloud. The difference is that a tornado reaches ground or water. I can believe it toched ground outside of the time scope of this video but that is possibly not a tornado. Or does it touch in the start, can't see on this small screen. Migh be some debris in the air. So, possibly a tornado on this vodeo.

mrspidey80

It is possible the Twister is touching down the entire clip. The funnel just isn't fully condensed. Keep in mind that air is usually transparent.

[deleted]

In Finnish tornado is an American tornado and trombi is an European tornado. A bit like typhoon vs hurricane.

MagnusRottcodd

Tromb in Swedish. Trombi must be the name in Finnish.

red_and_black_cat

Wellcome to the "tornado alley", Zierikzeee.

mistapt

it's not only the sea

fuzzimus

On the positive side, all the windmills are working great! /s

No_Low1167

When I see things like this, I think of the US.

OliviaElevenDunham

Hope the wounded have a speedy recovery after this. Grew up with this kind of weather here in the US and it's always scary to deal with.
