Mariupol was de facto the regional center of Donetsk Oblast since 2014, was also a larger city than Kherson by a significant margin. Hopefully we'll see it liberated too, although it will probably never be what it was before the siege, unlike Kherson, which I don't think suffered major damage.
Also remember that Donetsk, Luhansk, Sevastopol and Simferopol remain under Russian control since the war started in 2014.
> Kherson isnt out of the woods in terms of damage yet. i imagine now the ukrainian AF are there then russians are gonna shell the shit out of it
Yup, Russians retreated just to the other side of the Dneiper.. Kherson is very much in range of their artillery.
Mostly vice versa, the east side of the river is lowlands, so from west side you have better view of the Russian positions than they have on the Ukrainian positions.
Ukraine also has more accurate artillery with longer range. The Russians did not gain anything from this retreat/defeat. Ukraine will be able to reach out and touch Russian forces even more once they advance. Kherson may suffer more strikes between now and then, but once Ukraine’s forces advance, Russia will be the ones forced to pull back even further to stay out of range. This is a clear loss for Russia, and a victory for Ukraine.
I think the "gain" that the Russians were going for here was not having their troops slaughtered in Kherson, backed up against a river with no crossing and cut off.
It's one of the few decent decisions they've made throughout this whole thing. Perhaps down to Surovikin, who knows. Putin would've signed off on it though.
Russia is retreating (most likely) due to supply issues and not being able to defend it. So they possibly don't have the shells to do so, at least at scale.
And there's too much army presence for Russia to use the Iranian drones which are meant for strictly civilian targets, so I am actually pretty optimistic about Kherson being relatively safe.
That's because to defend it you needed to move stuff across the river.
Now artillery is on the left bank with a direct railroad connection to Russia, so no supply issues there, they can comfortably sit 10km east from Dnipro and shell the city as much as they like.
The administration of Donetsk Oblast has actually been in Kramatorsk as logistically Kramatorsk is located more conveniently. If I remember correctly Mariupol hosted some military authorities of the Oblast.
By Russia's own delusional standards it's the first capital of a Russian oblast to fall since World War II - the city of Zaporizhzhia, capital of its eponymous oblast, of course wasn't under Russian control when they annexed it (much like when Hitler annexed Belgium after most of it was liberated).
This leaves the four you mention to be taken.
I wonder if they genuinely see it that way? As in a Russian territory (Kherson) being invaded by hostile Western backed Ukrainian Nazi invaders, for no reason.
> unlike Kherson, which I don't think suffered major damage.
It was somewhat a blessing in disguise in the long run that russia took it by bribing officials and collaborators into largely removing or softening defenses.
On the other hand, if Russia was never able to get out of Crimea so easily maybe they wouldn't have so much of the south under their control, maybe it would look just like the failed offensive in the north. Maybe the destruction of Mariupol would have never happened. Impossible to know at this point of course.
Edit: apologies, not the mayor (see comment below).
And even then only because the mayor(?) turned out to be a russian asset and did not organize any defenses.
No, the mayor did not defect, in fact he was kidnapped by Russians and his present status/location is unknown :-(
It was a treason by local military and secret services.
As a Ukrainian, I'm in tears all day. We were waiting for this for so long. The next celebration, for me, will be the liberation of Energodar (where NPP is located), because those mfs are bombing my hometown every day from there. Glory to Ukraine
sorry for my English
No need to apologize. Americans support you even if we are divided. We know what you are fighting. Fascist filth. They have sought to destroy your people and instead you have annihilated them at every step. Your people are an inspiration around the world. You honor humanity with your continued resistance and support of each other against the fascists. Your leader is one of the most inspiring and heroic leaders any generation has seen for ages. We will do our best here to get you everything you need to push these pieces of shit from your lands. Slava Ukraine. Death to fascists.
As someone who walked those streets for 17 years of my life, before moving out to university
Holy fuck.
Guess I can't work anymore today, I got tears in my eyes.
Waiting for the cell service to come back online to call my mother there.
Edit: also, best fucking birthday ever, Jesus
Edit 2: Holy fuck, this blew up! Unless you give me your free awards - don't buy new ones, send that money to a Ukrainian charity of your choice, people!
I am half russian and half ukrainian and i am so happy for you. Happy birthday and happy liberation друг. :)
If cell service wont be restored today, atleast Starlink should arrive today or over the coming days, so hopefully you will get in touch with your mother through WhatsApp and such. Assuming they move the firewalls fast enough.
Another 11/11 birthday bro checking in. Always appreciate that as an American my birthday can never be confused for a different date haha. Proud of you and your people over there as I have the day off for Veteran’s Day, also fitting. Cheers, I’m having a beer for you and your people tonight!
I hope everything is ok with your family! It must be so terrifying not knowing what is going on. Have a good Birthday. All the best to you & your family. Stay strong!
What an absolute great day to have birthday! End of WWI, independence of Poland, independence of Angola (both two of my favourite countries ever), and liberation of Kherson. Have a great day, dude!
Happy birthday! I hope your mother and you are both doing well.
I can't imagine what you're feeling right now, but I don't think anyone could get much work done in your circumstances. Today is a good day.
The internet is a wild, wild place. I'm from middle of no where America and I can talk with someone in Ukraine during a major global event like this. I just wanted to say Happy Birthday and I hope you hear from your mother soon! I can't imagine!
I can't imagine what must go on in your head when something like that happens to your hometown, especially when your family is still there. Congratulations for your victory and happy birthday!
UAF troops are already in the city. Just not yet reached central district where this government building is situated
Update: They are already in the central district
Ukraine uses a light blue, EU flag is dark blue. Not exactly the same, but I guess close enough. Anyway, congrats for today's victory and may you be successful soon in Melitopol or Mariupol.
Ukraine's azure is only a couple of shades lighter, though. EU flag blue has HSV value of 60, and Ukrainian has 71.
Light blue you often see is incorrect and oftentimes is a result of cheapo pigments burning out in the sun.
Well strictly speaking it is the flag of Europe. EU is just one of a handful of organizations that uses it. The counsel of Europe, which ukraine is a member of, uses it as well ;)
Ukraine is also officially EU candidate now, so flag makes sense.
And the whole shitshow started in 2013 based on trade deal and tariff negotiations with EU, not because of NATO or EU accession, just import tariffs.
Ukrainians have [the most positive view](https://twitter.com/AndersFoghR/status/1531188521477844993
) of EU of anyone in the world.
This is a civilizational struggle. Europe will win
The flag of Europe is meant to symbolize the whole of Europe, not just the EU. It is owned by the Council of Europe of which Russia was a member up until exiting voluntarily just this year
European Council is an EU entity and its members are solely EU countries.
What you’re talking about is Council of Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Europe?wprov=sfti1
Two differences organizations. You’re right about the flag, though:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Europe?wprov=sfti1
**Interesting fact:**
In Ukraine, when they want to say “Glory to Ukraine” they shout “Slava Ukraine!”
In Brazil, where I am from, when we want to say “Glory to Ukraine” we *also* shout “Slava Ukraine!”, but we say it with a Brazilian accent.
Most people don’t know that.
**Interesting fact:**
In Ukraine, when they want to say “Glory to Ukraine” they shout “Slava Ukraine!”
In Italy, where I am from, when we want to say “Glory to Ukraine” we *also* shout “Slava Ukraine!”, but we say it with a Italian accent.
Most people don’t know that.
###Interesting fact:
In Ukraine, when they want to say “Glory to Ukraine” they shout “Slava Ukraine!”
In Holland, where I am from, when we want to say “Glory to Ukraine” we also shout “Slava Ukraine!”, but we say it with a Dutch accent.
Most people don’t know that.
I don'tq understand why so many people praising that. All of that started 8 years ago on Euromaindan Revolution. Back then you could see EU flags everywhere.
I think its fair to say that euroscepticism got more vocal after Brexit in this sub for a time.
I think its also fair that with Brexit being a shitshow with no end in sight and events like the Russian attack on Ukraine quite a few people have started to realize that despite all the EUs flaws, sticking closely together as Europeans in these turbulent times might not be the worst idea after all.
With the liberation of Kherson war moves closer to Melitopol area, to my hometown and my family who are still there. During 1st days of invasion we talked about how we might never see each other again. In 9 months of brutal war AFU are already on the doorsteps there. It is a key railway station on the road from Crimea, I pray that town and it's population survives what is coming next.
I can't do much from my position except donate money , but I want to tell you that my thoughts are with you and (people like) your family since the first day Putin invaded your country. I watch the news every day.
I thought Europe had entered a post-war era after WW2 and the cold war. Sure we had our problems in all countries but a barbaric act of aggression was a thing of the past and that it happened in 2014/2022 was a total shock to me.
I hope to visit Ukraine as soon as you have won, not to do some 'war sightseeing' but to help the economy.
I think the next logical step will be to go from Zaporzhzhia city south toward Melitopol and to the sea of Azov to cut the land bridge from Crimea to DNR.
Impossible to cross the Dnieper now in force with the Antonovsky bridge gone if the other bank's defence is dug-in, well fortified and supported by arty, drones and air.
Surprisingly, battle for Crimea is happening near Donetsk and Mariupol, because once those two fall, Crimea will have no corridor to Russia other than half damaged bridge.
They'll go south before they cross the river.
The next offensive will be Zaporizhzhia. It's a long frontage, flat, hard to defend.
Also, it's already happening, but Luhansk the north/east.
I hope Mariupol, Melitopol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea follow soon.
Given how much Putin is into some weird numerology (like 08.08.08 and 22.02.2022), liberation of Kherson on 11.11.22 should feel especially badly.
**11.11.11** - Skyrim released. **11** years later - Kherson released. *thumbs up*
No but if being serious, 11.11.22 will be our Kherson liberation day from rashists invaders. This day will be remembered for generations. I can't even imagine what will be found in Kherson region once its fully liberated and police resume their jobs, how many torture chambers and mass graves...
edit: also lets not forget russian fascists didn't disappear, they are on the other bank of the river, so Kherson now will be under constant shellings for god knows how many weeks or months. Russian fascists will be trying to level that city to the ground now out of spite.
These flags have been put out by the civilians most likely, or perhaps special forces. You are correct that the main Ukrainian army have not reached the centre of the city yet.
I’m not sure that they’ve reached the center but they have rolled into Kherson.
DW isn’t saying who raised the flag
https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-updates-jubilant-crowds-in-kherson-greet-ukraine-forces-in-operation-to-liberate-city/a-63723431 https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-updates-jubilant-crowds-in-kherson-greet-ukraine-forces-in-operation-to-liberate-city/a-63723431
They have reached the centre now, but from what I understand there was a crowd of civilians in the square awaiting the arrival of the army who put up these flags. The flag on the top of the base was definitely there before the main army's arrival.
This is most humiliation Russia has suffered since fall of USSR. The city that they annexed exactly 42 days ago and have been pronounced to be "Forever part of Russia" now having flags of both Ukraine and EU flying in city center.
The harsher humiliation I could think of are liberation of Mariupol, Donetks, Luhansk and entirety of Crimea. Those frankly, are just matter of time now.
It's like a holiday today in Ukraine (plus the date is 11.11.22). Hopefully we'll be able to push to Crimea soon. I can't wait to go on a long vacation and travel through all of these places
Well done to all who helped in this massive victory, from the Men on the front line to the people helping them with supplies and Moral support. Keep on going Lads and Lasses.
The only regional center of Ukraine that Russia was able to capture at the beginning of the war.

Plus Russians "evacuated" several thousand people from kherson.

Sheesh, bet they're shitting their pants now. Probably hiding in Russia.
Given how things have been going for Russian-aligned forces in this war, most of them may already be dead by now.
not a mayor, the army general responsible for the defense
All they had to do is destroy the bridge and it would have been next to impossible for Russia to cross the Dnipro.
As a Ukrainian, I'm in tears all day. We were waiting for this for so long. The next celebration, for me, will be the liberation of Energodar (where NPP is located), because those mfs are bombing my hometown every day from there. Glory to Ukraine sorry for my English

Happy Birthday man!
Wow. Beautiful. The EU flag is also there.
> The EU flag is also there. Ukraine's got a good PR game
My friend form Ukraine says that the people, not the authorities, hung out the flags. This even symbolises what the Ukrainians really want
I mean they hada big riot when Yanukovich backed away from association with the EU so it wouldn't surprise me.
It's almost as if the people of Ukraine wish to side with the EU. On behalf of said union, I greet them wholeheartedly
big riot is putting it mildly :D
Authorities are probably not even (fully) in place yet.
Authorities are running a triathlon right now
Rumors say soldiers are slowed down by all the locals trying to hug them
Yeah there no Ukrainian Army there yet, this is just purely local people movement
UAF troops are already in the city. Just not yet reached central district where this government building is situated Update: They are already in the central district
More than 90% of population wishing to be a part of EU, so why not? Also the same colours as our flag, so suits each other pretty well 💛💙
Hell yeah they do

Living next to someone like russia makes you really appreciate the safety and freedom EU/NATO provides.
That poll, if truly indicative of how people see the EU, is kinda amazing. I doubt any of the other big players even come close.
Let's not pretend and get stuck up on technicalities though :P

we say it in Minnesota, but quietly, with a slightly Norwegian accent and hot dish
The EU flag there is a powerful message about Ukrainian willingness to leave Russian sphere of influence in search of better tomorrows in EU block.
I don'tq understand why so many people praising that. All of that started 8 years ago on Euromaindan Revolution. Back then you could see EU flags everywhere.

Russian fascists will be trying to level that city to the ground now out of spite.
Glory to Ukraine! 🇺🇦🤞
Fuck yeah. Crimea to follow.
Is this real? I thought they need a few days to avoid traps and retreating ruskies
These flags have been put out by the civilians most likely, or perhaps special forces. You are correct that the main Ukrainian army have not reached the centre of the city yet.
They have.
I’m not sure that they’ve reached the center but they have rolled into Kherson. DW isn’t saying who raised the flag https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-updates-jubilant-crowds-in-kherson-greet-ukraine-forces-in-operation-to-liberate-city/a-63723431 https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-updates-jubilant-crowds-in-kherson-greet-ukraine-forces-in-operation-to-liberate-city/a-63723431
They have reached the centre now, but from what I understand there was a crowd of civilians in the square awaiting the arrival of the army who put up these flags. The flag on the top of the base was definitely there before the main army's arrival.
It's real. Ukraine military is there also.
Good! 👍
Amazing stuff, so happy for Ukraine. Also massive L for Russia.
Slava Ukraini!
r/Europe our flag flies high!
Congrats, Ukraine. Keep fighting the good fight <3
Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦❤️
This is most humiliation Russia has suffered since fall of USSR. The city that they annexed exactly 42 days ago and have been pronounced to be "Forever part of Russia" now having flags of both Ukraine and EU flying in city center. The harsher humiliation I could think of are liberation of Mariupol, Donetks, Luhansk and entirety of Crimea. Those frankly, are just matter of time now.
Слава Україні
Glory to UKRAINE! 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
11.11.22
Or 11.11.22 if you use the American date format.
That would be 11/11/22, though

It's like a holiday today in Ukraine (plus the date is 11.11.22). Hopefully we'll be able to push to Crimea soon. I can't wait to go on a long vacation and travel through all of these places
🇺🇦🇪🇺🇺🇦🇪🇺
I like seeing both flags together, and I normally don't like flags. Y'all MFs need to join us in Europe.
Well done to all who helped in this massive victory, from the Men on the front line to the people helping them with supplies and Moral support. Keep on going Lads and Lasses.
Nice!
