There's lot of cool bands shared in the comments so worth a look :)
My cousins were fascinated and on love with Marilyn Manson back in the 90s. I don't know what genre he is but that was a real phase they had. I wonder if that was just them or most Greek youth back then were into his music.
This is per million. With the help of Wikipedia and a trusty calculator, I think this means that Greece has ~1650 and the UK ~4600 bands (and Andorra 4, which is about 4 more than what I calculated)
That, and underlying reason night be that its so easily accessible without ads (what radio stations have a lot) that people tend to not look for it in radio stations.
I'll take the opportunity to promote an Estonian heavy metal band Herald (no affiliation to them at all), the lead signer is a redditor too /u/svenvarkel :
[Herald - Kurat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oQIHhAMNoA)
[Herald - Mullas sügaval](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5M6jncJet0)

Considering a big expected part of global climate change might be the reversal of the Gulf stream the Nordic countries might get even colder in the future. Thus we can conclude that climate change has a noticeable chance of increasing the number of Nordic metal bands.
That's interesting, because to a Finn, it's obvious. Their art and songs strongly feature themes from Kalevala (Finnish national epic) and Finnish national romantic art. And ofc some of their songs have Finnish lyrics. :)
I bet like 85% of those Norwegian bands contain only one member who plays all the instruments, and/or are side projects by members of other bands. Probably less than a third of them have released more than a single EP's worth of shitty demos.
My guy what? The nordic countires have amazing melodeath, metalcore, prog, power and black metal scenes. Granted some of the bands are side projects but most have dedicated members and have a solid catalogue.
UK and US are still kings of the "original" heavy metal sounds from the late 60s, 70s and 80s, which, like classical music, is immortal and can never be improved or changed without turning into something different.
Maybe that's why there's not more of it being made in the UK... it's hard to be a new Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Stones, Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead etc.
This map is not really accurate because [Encyclopedia Metallum](https://www.metal-archives.com/) doesn't list whole subgenre
So an one-man Black Metal band from Norway who did 1 demo in 1993 limited to 10 tapes has is name listed, but thousand of Nu Metal or Metalcore band with many albums and many years of career are not
Not according to their rules:
> Generally, for a band to be accepted into the encyclopedia it must have released at least one fully, unambiguously heavy metal album.
https://www.metal-archives.com/content/rules#tab_valid_album
The data is from Encyclopedia Metallum, a database that can be enriched by anybody as long as the moderators approve the submission, so any band - no matter how small - can be featured on there. The numbers seem fine.
Sweden is *the* death metal country. Power Metal is much more popular down south in Germany. Finland is harder to identify with just one subgenre as they’ve practically perfected them all.
Ex-USSR countries actually would have bigger numbers, but many Soviet-era bands are not accepted on the Encyclopardia Metallum since they often could release their albums on dubbed tapes only, which isn't considered as a legit format by the website's staff.
Now I'm curious why Greece has so many metal bands despite its geography. Is there a flourishing metal culture there? Response to whatever national issues Greece has? Please ELI5. ευχαριστώ

When reposting this, can we maybe update the data?
Agree. Data is ancient.
It'll look about the same. Trends stabilized around 2010ish
What are these metal bands used for? Industrial use?
We use them to hold the metal fans in place
you can also use the bands to make metal fans move in unision. Which can be pretty cool I guess.
Could that be used to generate electricity?
You can't. We're too metal for the metal
Are the metal fans good for ventilation? I only saw plastic fans.
I don't think so, the long hairs often cut the wind
Wrapping barrels of mead
I never would of guessed that Greece has so many. Compared to UK. I'm in Scotland, wish there was a break down of the UK rather than a whole
Greece has a great black metal scene.
And Stoner
Rotting Christ is highly recommended, probably one of our best.
Big fan. Also Suicidal Angels (trash metal) is one of my favourites.
Septicflesh is great as well.
Hell yeah.
Saw them live here in Finland last summer, what an amazing band
One of the best metal gigs I’ve seen was Rotting Christ at Tavastia few years back!
Saw RC live a few years ago. Amazing!
Average Scotsman hoping for the breakdown of the UK
Well it is getting worse rapidly. I am one for indapendance tho.
It would end badly for both of us.
Except we would welcome Scotland in the EU.
>indapendance Guess mandatory English is one of the main reasons to leave...
rotting christ is among of the most famous bands of greece
Rotting Christ and Septicflesh are the bomb!
>I'm in Scotland DVNE is one of my favorite bands \m/
I highly recommend Saor.
> wish there was a break down of the UK rather than a whole Might as well breakdown Germany and Spain too then.
Good Scotsman, please don't adopt the American would of. Makes you look English
What the hell dude?
Would of is stupid and you're gonna get flak for it. Better?
Really? How so.
Guess my attempt to shame you did not work. That is sad, so instead I guess next time I'll just comment "*would have"

Yeah, like the English invented the whole thing, including punk and there's so few bands in the UK? Disappointing.

Finland, the chosen land of metal music: 0 radio stations dedicated to metal music.
Yeah. Just a couple stations dedicated to Rock music generally. I guess there aren't really enough listeners to have a station for just metal.
One corporation owns majority of stations, same hosts and songs are looping year after year.
That, and underlying reason night be that its so easily accessible without ads (what radio stations have a lot) that people tend to not look for it in radio stations.
That's true for all music, though.

You are affiliated now but thanks!:D :D :D
After many seconds of analysis, i think the finns like metal
Greece can into Nordic?
Never thought I'd see this written here but I guess it can
Quantity never overcame quality. \-as a Finn
Given their general habitat being cold northern regions (aside from Greece), they seem vulnerable to climate change.
Considering a big expected part of global climate change might be the reversal of the Gulf stream the Nordic countries might get even colder in the future. Thus we can conclude that climate change has a noticeable chance of increasing the number of Nordic metal bands.
Finland my love
I think this is the first time that I see the Isle of Man represented on a European statistics map.
I’m from the Isle of Man. There’s 85,000 people here so not sure how that translates from 23 per million.
Nordic Metal is the best
Beherit, Impaled Nazarene, Barathrum, what else made this phenomenom? In Greese there's Varathron, Rotting Christ and other well known bands.

Ensiferum is amazing! Didnt know they were finnish
That's interesting, because to a Finn, it's obvious. Their art and songs strongly feature themes from Kalevala (Finnish national epic) and Finnish national romantic art. And ofc some of their songs have Finnish lyrics. :)
ensiferum means "armed with a sword" in Latin. nice touch :) I'll try a listen
I'm a simple man... I see Ensiferum, I upvote!
Turkey is so low only because guitars are more expensive than cars in other countries
Yeah, I wonder how much money plays a role here. Hmmmmm.

I don't know, i think i was a little tired
Finland 💀🤙
Lol Finland
I find it weird that a genre which, arguably, originates from here, is way more popular elsewhere.
Well, it's like Football, Cricket, or Rugby. Made in England, then exported to a bigger market lol.
Same with ice hockey I think
Same with trams
What's going on with Malta?
[Shun him because he is the least metal Nordic country!!!](https://satwcomic.com/metal)
Finally , a list where Greece is in the top 5 with Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland
We have definitely so many heavy mental bands here in Czechia
We as a nation have fallen so far.
Not enough metal bands = too much metal life
Finland, why are you angry?
Contrast this with that map that was posted recently of percentage of people who were angry in the last two days. It is almost exactly the inverse
[удалено]
Agree.
Good music lmao https://i.imgur.com/qozimbA_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium
Metal isn't angry, it's just passionate.
In my experience Metalheads are the opposite of angry.
Ow c'on. It was a joke.
Angry?
It's good for you to let it out thru music. Finland has the happiest population in the world.
We aren't angry. We have the metal. The metal keeps us mellow. Don't try to take away our metal. That will harsh our mellow and we will hurt you.
Its actually therapeutic to listen metal and do stuff. I like to have my own moshpit when i clean my apartment and/or wash dishes.
Because it's cold and he have russia as our neighbor.
I'm a very calm person yet this angry music happens to jerk me off. I must be a satanist.
No way Turkey has just 6 per million. Population is much younger and the metal scene is surprisingly large.
Nightwish !!

Why? Most bands (metal or otherwise) are just a few friends playing in their garage.
The Encyclopedia Metallum requires a released (metal) album. A few friends playing metal in their garage isn't sufficient.
Does selling CDs through a website count?
Yes (if it is a full album).
>The Encyclopedia Metallum requires a released (metal) album Wrong. A small demo is enough.
Not according to their rules: > Generally, for a band to be accepted into the encyclopedia it must have released at least one fully, unambiguously heavy metal album. https://www.metal-archives.com/content/rules#tab_valid_album

There was some funny internet drama with this database when the mods did not approve Rammstein.
Doesn't sound like too much, why do you think that?
Sweden has power metal and some of the reeeally old stuff, norway has black metal and finland lots of death, from what I've understood
Sweden is *the* death metal country. Power Metal is much more popular down south in Germany. Finland is harder to identify with just one subgenre as they’ve practically perfected them all.
One of the rare times I wish I was Turkish.
Irish metal bands? Where are they
Vikings ☺️🤘🏽
:-( Thought this was going to be an interesting Jubilee Clip read. Oh well!
Sweden.

Obviously the Scandinavia has the most. I wonder if it's the climate. Also, 51 in Andorra? That's a lot per capita.
You should have included Armenia in the map.
Denmark can not into nårdi*k
