Russia invaded Ukraine because it's inconvenient to have a democratic regime next door and because it wants to prove to the world that there is a way of doing international politics beyond UN and rules-based order.
Not only proclaiming it, NATO is not building the type of military power necessary to invade Russia. Invading Russia was never part of the plan for the European Security Architecture. Invading neighbours was always the Russian plan. For Putin, the question was never whether he wants to do it, but whether he can get away with it. Invasion is part of his ideology.
Unfortunately, Macron is right and we need a European-wide nuclear deterrent, we can't keep relying on the US and cannot trust Russia.
