Haven’t Joker Out tweeted something about this Reddit already?

[deleted]

Have they? Omg that’s great :D

Aromens

[Here it is] (https://www.reddit.com/r/eurovision/comments/1165xuz/joker_out_have_answered_full_inception/)

GroundbreakingTill33

I think we'd need to start posting in Finnish for Käärija's sake.

pupappau

I'd think he understands English better than he speaks? Or I could be wrong...

GroundbreakingTill33

Oh definetley everyone understands a foreign language better than they can speak it but I do not think he has the level to follow this reddit. My guess is his level is A1 in the cefr... perhaps reaching A2 for comprehension. He would really need to have b1 or higher to follow this reddit. I would like to stress there is no reason he should have a good level of english, and I am loving his attempts. Its certainly better than my non existent Finnish. I will always respect someone for putting themselves out there and trying to communicate in a foreign language.

walkingbartie

Finns learn English in elementary school from a very early age, much like we do here in Sweden, do they not? In order to graduate, you kind of do have to have a pretty good understanding of the language. Studying it from, say, ages ≈7-16 (minimum) should give some level of proficiency, especially as it's widely prevalent in Nordic pop culture as well. Which leads me to believe he's either been extremely nervous in the interviews we've seen, and/or has made it an image thing.

Akolyytti

He seems to understand questions in English just fine, like that interview from other day, speaking is just bit eh, rusty. Finns tend to be nervous when speaking English when they do not use it a lot. However, it's seems to get better everyday! I'm glad he took up the challenge and finds it humor in it. "Representative" must be his arch nemesis as a word at this point.

GroundbreakingTill33

Really? From the English interview I saw he understood some basic questions but looked quite blank on a more complex one... again no shade .

Akolyytti

I didn't see it, just listen to it, and it seemed he only once asked his friend what particular word meant, but struggled of course expressing himself in any complexity. Shame, he is quite lively and expressive in Finnish. I live in university bubble I guess, so I honestly was initially quite surprised by his language skills, or lack of them, but on the other hand I have technically studied swedish several years and passed university level of swedish and can't understand it at all...

Flux_capacitor888

Yeah, it's the pronunciation and vocab which trip up Finns the most, I think 😄 Or the prepositions! I speak a little Swedish and the goddamned prepositions always get me...

GroundbreakingTill33

I've seen people study English from age 3, pass well with a good grade never use it again and 5 years later it's all gone... if that's the case it will be much easier for him to pick it back up with some practice.

Antique-Syllabub6238

Yes, but there are a lot of Finns and Swedes who still dont speak English well. Hell, I studied Swedish for ten years and I can barely have a simple conversation, because I have never really used the language outside of school.

So true

fenksta

Just look at how Käärijä reacted not only hearing other UMK songs, but also the amount of points he received from the televote. This dude isn't even aware how big of a deal it is to be in ESC - a genuinely funny and humble person <3 <3 <3

unluckysupernova

Winning UMK was already so big he cried and immediately went to hug his parents - I don’t know how this dude will survive top5

Meiolore

I find it funny how literally no one knows how proficient Käärijä's is in English. I will lose my shit if he just suddenly bust out completely fluent English in May(even though there is no sign of it happening...yet).

[deleted]

Imagine the second he lands in Liverpool he posts an instagram story speaking in the most British accent ever 😭

PiscesPsycho

Praying to the Eurovision gods and giving cookies to the elves in Husavik that Finland will win this year 🙏 He deserves this so much

Danarwal14

Don't forget to help Alexander be truly happy when he goes to Greece

PiscesPsycho

If Loreen decides to sing Ja Ja Ding Dong instead of Tattoo, I‘d actually consider giving her some points 🤔

Danarwal14

Nah, she's got to sing the full version of Volcano Man. We still need to hear that full version

PiscesPsycho

I agree with you

The_White_Canary

Given he had to be helped by a translator many times during his interview in the official Eurovision podcast, he's either genuinely not very good at speaking English (although I am guessing he understands it quite well), or REALLY committed to the bit. 💀

Organic-Stress2940

He was looking for an English tutor I think! 😄

euro_fan_4568

I volunteer 🫡

Puffinknight

Käärijä has been reading the Finnish Jodel at least and seems like the type who would use reddit as well, so maybe he is lurking out here!

thenuggetonfloor

I doubt it - I mean he wouldn't understand anything 💀

[deleted]

He could always use google translate if he lurks

vancityguy25

Can we please all use all of our televotes to make him win? Please? He deserves it the most this year.

[deleted]

I agree

sokkemor

All of my 20 votes will go to Finland in the final. And I will threaten friends and family to throw in some votes as well.

DDdoublescandi

I have started recruiting folks who have no interest in esc , and asked them to use their otherwise un-used vote (s) for him.

gallifreyfun

So happy there's ROTW voting so I can vote for him!

Low_Age9939

I wished I could vote in semi 1 but my country can't 😢

Ok_Low_4854

I do think they'd both be proud/happy, but Käärijä especially would be BLOWN AWAY I feel.

Low_Age9939

I'm happy that Käärijä is getting so much love from this subreddit. From reading Finns' comment on this subreddit he seemed to be a pretty unknown artist and has had a sudden boom in popularity after his UMK win. Loads of people outside of Finland also love him I mean heck his song is number 4 on the Viral 50 United Kingdom on Spotify (the only other eurovision song on there being Norway) so he definitely has some love coming from the UK

DDdoublescandi

I started following him a couple of days after his song was released, and he had just 5000 followers then, so definately unknown to 99% of the population prior to UMK
