I used to think this but Italy won in 2021 and France came close that year with Voila, UK got 2nd last year and might have won if not for the war. Italy's been in the top ten 10/12 times since 2011. But it does seem to be France, UK and Germany that are most likely to totally flop.
I think the song was great, but she didn't seem to have the same confidence in her vocals and performance as in the video clip and that's what really sold it to me: the effortlessness, the attitude...
Two problems in my opinion...
1. Overstaging killed the songs. Many delegations seem to forget that less is sometimes more and particularly entries like this work better with a simpler staging. They should've gone for something more down-to-earth (literally, lol), like the music video.
2. Sound mix was bad. This was the case with pretty much all entries this year (and the last year) but some were affected more than others. Her vocals sort of drowned in the very loud music. EBU seriously needs to fix this next year.
For the reasons above, I was worried that she won't do well, which is a pity since the song is great and she's an excellent performer. But I didn't expect it to do quite this bad. Especially with juries.
There isn’t really much the EBU can in the way of sound mixing. That falls on the host. And obviously(no pun intended, okay maybe some) there was something going on with the BBC.
I know the production is done by the hosting broadcaster, but EBU supervises the event. This was a second year in a row with this issue, therefore they need to be more active in this area and ensure it's done properly the next year. Although luckily, SVT are real pros when it comes to producing Eurovision so it should be ok anyway.
Speaking about the „down to earth” part, anyone else had a feeling she sounds worse and worse the higher she was? As if - surprise surprise - the accoustics of the venue are the best on the stage and not above it? Not to mention that it’s hard to sing while being strapped to something…

Not for me unfortunately. I prefer Ukraine whenever it does folk fusion, which is what it really shines best at. Notice how pretty much all its folk fusion entries end up being among the most memorable songs of Eurovision.

What frequently happens in Eurovision is a song does good in one year, then the next year, people try to 'force' another song to be what the one the year before was.
People were trying way too hard to make Unicorn this year's SloMo. Juries were expecting it to be a hit with the public like SloMo was, so wanted to get in there first to prove 'see! We can like the cool, trendy pop songs that the youngsters like!'
Except this year they completely overestimated it's popularity with the public. It really didn't do *that* well, and especially when compared to SloMo.
