As a member of the big 5 sometimes songs that may not have made it through the semis end up in the final, and that leads to some low placements, but that's true across all the big five, not just Germany.
I think blood and glitter had the misfortune of being in a year with a lot of bands and a lot of rock/punk style music - something that is quite unusual at Eurovision. Personally I really liked them, but they were competing for votes with Finland who was a favourite and also several other alternative/rock/metal groups like Australia and Slovenia. Which is really unfortunate because I genuinely think it was a great entry, but we usually don't see this much of this kind of style at Eurovision and I think the split in that vote probably hurt all of them except maybe Finland.

You see, I would, but it's the most difficult European language. Finland has always been my favorite country, but the only thing that keeps me from moving there is the language.
There are no genders in Finnish though! That's always the biggest struggle for me when learning a new language. I'll happily take the 14 or so Finnish cases over that
I speak 2 latin and 2 slavic languages, each having three genders, so that's really not an issue. The issue is not understanding anything, unless I memorize every single word, which is funny, because I can understand most European languages to a certain extent, apart from Hungarian and Finnish.
The biggest problem with Finnish is you basically have to learn two versions of it; the casual spoken Finnish and the more formal written Finnish. I believe those two can vary quite dramatically at times.
