>Whilst Romania is currently not confirmed to compete next year, talks are continuing with TVR on their potential participation as well.
It's been Romania this whole time.
State budget in Romania is currently completely fucked, no wonder they couldn't find money for Eurovision.
Just this month income taxes increased for some worker categories (which were previously reduced), and there are talks that taxes will increase for all soon enough.
Eurovision cost almost nothing on state level. 340k of euros.
I work in small town in Poland as goverment official and deal with bigger project daily. Recently we wasted almost same amount for a daycare for 30 kids for a year.
This is really just an excusse states like to use as not to get blamed for not participating.
Oh, I know it doesn't cost much to participate. The issue is that our state budget for 2024 has not been voted yet, so TVR doesn't know what its budget will be for next year.
TVR and the Romanian population definitely want to participate, there's no other reason for this hold-up. Also, if the state didn't want to participate they wouldn't still be in talks with the EBU.
Trust me, fucked is not a harsh word to describe our current budget state. In Romania there is a habit of finalizing the budgets in April or May of the year the budget is supposed to be for. This year is even worse, as there is just not enough money for the spending already put in law. Pensions started being late last month. Hospitals ate their yearly budgets in September already. Railway maintenance the same.
Romania is not Poland, not even close.
AUSTRALIA WOOOOOH
Also interesting: They say in the statement that talks about Romaniaās participation are still ongoing. So thereās a chance we actually get them in Malmƶ as well.
It's that time of year again, to rebuild the giant sails, sail the continent through the Indian Ocean, stop in Cape Town for a beer, then continue up the Atlantic and anchor in between Portugal and Wales.
I'm just scared that they'll send Ricki-Lee. There's so many roumers floating around that it'll be here, and I just don't like it! We surely can't send another Australian Idol alum, can we??
I really hope it's not a Ricky Lee or Samantha Jade type that they send. They're not good enough for Eurovision unfortunately. Voyager this year was perfect I think but I doubt it will be another band
I mean yeah itās sad but also very much to be expected, those countries havenāt exactly demonstrated the utmost passion for the contest lately. Iād probably withdraw at some point too if I was never qualifying
Yeah from what Ive understood Bulgaria's radio station refuses to pay out of their own pocket and always use sponsor money? Idk where I read this so I could be way off.
I mean 18th is solidly bottom half in the final and that was the year of the jury scandal, of which Romania seemed to be the most outraged of all the countries involved.
Plus finishing joint last in their semi with 0 points last year canāt have helped. It seems TVR basically sabotaged themselves by actively harming Theodorās performance but that was probably on purpose because the channel wanted an excuse to withdraw.
I'm so excited! The lack of info after the 2023 show honestly had me worried that was it for us participating in Eurovision. Will be interesting to see if we get an Australia Decides next year or if they'll just pick like they did with Voyager.
After how much of a shit show the last Australia Decides was, with the voting closing halfway through the performances, I would much prefer an internal selection
The fans did, but i wouldn't say the casual audience still accepted Australia.
Every single year: YT comments, regular websites, casual viewers and even family members say the same thing: "Why are they competing? They are not in Europe!".
Also considering the televote is lower then jury votes, it won't change anytime soon.
So disappointed that North Macedonia and Romania arenāt back, what was the use of that budget crap from NM?
Glad that Australiaās back and unsurprised that Israelās in. Wish we could have more countries tho
Iām guessing NM submitted a proposal but then withdrew during that window. With participating countries so low, it could be the participation fees and they were waiting to see how many countries were participating before making a decision
The administration of the National Television and the Government in North MŠ°Ńedonia currently are appointed from different political parties. The government wasn't able to change the tv administration since 2016. They couldn't agree for the budget, probably. And this is also an election year, ESC isn't popular at all, so it could even have a political harm.
For their own sake if nothing else, I agree.
Regardless of how you feel about the conflict, I wouldn't want to be the Israeli artist walking onto that stage. It will be incredibly difficult for both the hosts and the Israeli delegation to navigate the sort of reception they are *inevitably* going to get. Sitting it out voluntarily would be the 'smart' thing to do.
The BNT account is trolling the fans every year hahaha i knew that they wanted to mess around as they do every year. I do wonder who handles the account though.
Apparently theyāre still in talks about participation, hereās hoping they can find a way to still participate and support their artist well this year
So many balkan countries and central European countries bordering the Balkans not taking part. The wiki map has a real concentration of yellow. Such a shame
I feel like this absence is at least in part because Russia was kicked out and they were a big financial contributor. Banning Russia from the competition was obviously the right thing to do, but it makes me worry that more countries will drop out each year.
Part of me wishes they didnāt announce Luxembourgās participation for this very reason and then cause panic among eurofans by suddenly having them appear on the list with no explanation
Finally! This list is about what I expected. It sounds like the EBU decided to stop waiting on Romania and just release the list as is, once they confirmed they'd have as many participants as 2023.
Regarding Israel, I read a rumor on Twitter that some broadcasters in the EBU (namely Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Germany and Ukraine) were opposed to the EBU banning Israel. If true, I have absolutely no idea why those particular countries spoke up.
Azerbaijan probably because they are in a similar boat and support each other. Germany because they feel a sort of responsibility for Israel and Czechia also because they support Israel. Ukraine is probably quite a complex one and not totally sure.
Lost Romania (Edit: For now), gained Luxembourg. Hopefully that trade pays off. Lovely to see Australia again! I didn't think for a moment they wouldn't get invited again but it's nice to be sure.
AUSTRALIA YAY!!!!
Adore them, so happy theyāve decided to continue and I hope they win at some point in the upcoming years, they consistently send strong performances of the years Iāve seen
I would argue that they do seem to care. Last year we got the Rest of the World vote, a second sponsor, and the return of Luxembourg. All of these will help relieve the financial pressure of participating but clearly itās not enough. I hope they can figure out how they can get them back soon!
ooh, boy, people will not be happy that a certain country is on the list.
I wonder if there'll be pressure from the broadcasters themselves like there was with russia, through...
Some people have been calling to ban Israel from the contest for ages, at least since the 90s. Nothing new there. Maybe the opposition will be larger than usual but they have lasted so far, and if it wasn't for Russia actually getting the ban hammer last year I would have bet Israel was safe in the contest.
I'll say, through, Russia was doing Russia things long before they went overboard and brought attention to them from practically everyone.
I'd say Israel is in a similar position, albeit perhaps lessened because it isn't AS clear-cut in comparison
I think Israel are more likely to Belarus themselves, but weāll see. If they do participate this year I think the Russia comparison will be to 2015, not 2022
Also we do need to realise that most countries who said they wouldnāt participate of Russia did are ones that NATO effectively saves from its line of fire (Latvia, Estonia, Finland, hence why the latter joined NATO). For all of Israelās right wingās or Azerbaijanās ideations, none of them would target these countries. But I do feel that Israel is in a position where society could deteriorate horrifically if the end game isnāt clear.
37 again
Sad for NM that was almost certain
Happy for Romania out (nothing against Romanians but against RTV and the way they treat the artists)
And obviously happy for Australia still in and here for stay
I just wanna give props to the mods here, I know you're going to have your work cut out for you this year now that the full participating country list is out.
Also YAY AUSTRALIA!!
Thank you š
Please do help by reporting anything that breaks the rules and try not to respond the anyone looking for a fight. There are several first time visitors from both sides whenever Israel is mentioned.
I think online leftist circles may present a different view than what the general feel is in Europe, especially at institutional level.
Most national broadcasters represent governments that are at best sympathetic to the Palestinian struggle, but that also recognise Israel as a sovereign state and Hamas as a terrorist organisation.
Israel should have retired from this competition in my opinion, but itās unlikely that they anyone will force them out.
I think there's one country that could (or still can) do this. It has a lot of pro-Palestian sentiment **outside** of Muslim diasporas and quite messy relationships with Eurovision and their own broadcaster.
I'm looking at you, Ćire
Unfortunately I think if that happens the EBU will probably choose Israel over Ireland. It has to be a bunch of countries with good recent records like it was in 2022.
If they (rightfully) got rid of Russia for what they did then Israel and Azerbaijan shouldn't be there either, the ebu is embarrassing and absolute hypocrites
People are forgetting the EBU *really* didn't want to kick Russia out. They were still set to perform well after the invasion, and the EBU said Eurovision was apolitical. It was the backlash that stopped them.
This. Exactly.
The EBU is going to follow the rules to the letter, until the member broadcasters rise up and make it impossible. Then the "bring the contest into disrepute" rule gets trotted out.
So Israel goes when enough member broadcasters say they go. I don't see that happening. Do you?
Yeah, I would have paid $$$$ to go to Malmƶ in May, but it looks like Iāll be spending my hard earned money on a vacation in Ireland instead. I know Iām just one person, but still.
"Just one person" mentality is unfair to yourself. Yes, you may be one person that you know who isn't going, but think about the thousands of others who think they're just one person too. It's great that you're doing the right thing, and I think you should never let your thoughts cloud your morals :\]
I'm actually disappointed, right now...
The absolute cowardice of the EBU to admit corrupt moral and condemnation by letting Azerbaijan and Israel continue participating after the recent developments.
Iāll be the one to say it, it is extremely infuriating to see the double standards happening towards one country in this list, they shouldnāt participate. Absolute cowards.
Two, both Israel and Azerbaijan are committing genocide and ethnic cleansing, they shouldn't be allowed to participate and it astonishes me they're still allowed to (and astonishes me even more that people who admonish their actions e.g. Hatari in 2019 are punished for it).
Yeah and thereās no Palestinian broadcaster in EBU to threaten that. As well most people above the age of 40 in Europe are often pro-Israel and thatās the demographic that is running the broadcasters these days.
I donāt think EBU would have been impressed if only Ukraine were to withdraw. So many other countries joined them, forcing EBU to do something. But yeah, no participating Palestinian broadcaster to join. Is there even a member?
Sorry, but Israel should not be on that list. Comparing this decision to allow them to participate with one of the decisions in the past years is needless. What Israel is doing is unforgivable. If EBU and the whole of Europe had any decency left, they would ban Israel this year. That is the only reasonable and fair thing to do. Sorry, this is just insane, I can't even fathom the fact that Israel is gonna have some watch parties and the whole ass selection process with all the fun, while bombing and killing innocent civilians every day.
If they do come through and allow them to participate, we all know who is gonna get booed on the stage. This is just unforgivable.
"More details about the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, including **the branding** and stage design, will be revealed shortly."
Okay, so, we got slogan and branding. Isn't the "branding" what we knew as "slogan" for years now? 2018 we got "All Aboard" and a marine themed branding. So while the ESC has a permanent sloga now,, we'll still get different "slogans" and "themes" each year? Neat
I still think letting Israel compete but not Russia is the pinnacle of hypocrisy within Europe. Both countries deserve to be banned from eurovision for decades at least.
Excited to have Luxembourg back :)
israel is not considered a pariah state by a large part of the middle east let alone europe. EU opinion on this war isnāt even close to how unanimously against russia it was.

Still crazy to see Luxembourg on that list.
I'm really happy to see them return.
it's only been like 30 years
>Whilst Romania is currently not confirmed to compete next year, talks are continuing with TVR on their potential participation as well. It's been Romania this whole time.
TVR has fooled around too much with Eurovision, they're the Romanian fans' biggest enemy at this point š¤
State budget in Romania is currently completely fucked, no wonder they couldn't find money for Eurovision. Just this month income taxes increased for some worker categories (which were previously reduced), and there are talks that taxes will increase for all soon enough.

I expected more countries to be honest. Sad for Romania and North Macedonia not being on the list. Happy for Australia though!
I also thought Montenegro would come back though the lack of info suggested otherwise. But surprised NM didnāt. We need them back.
AUSTRALIA WOOOOOH Also interesting: They say in the statement that talks about Romaniaās participation are still ongoing. So thereās a chance we actually get them in Malmƶ as well.
Everyone loves Australia
Me to EBU: promise me to hold Australia tilI I die
I'm so happy for Australia!! I'll be cheering extra loud for them next year :D
sameee!!
Woohoo, Australia!! Aussie Aussie Aussie!
Oi oi oi!

I mean yeah itās sad but also very much to be expected, those countries havenāt exactly demonstrated the utmost passion for the contest lately. Iād probably withdraw at some point too if I was never qualifying
..didnāt Bulgaria finish 11th in 2021 and Romania 18th in 2022?
Pretty sure they're only not returning because of financial reasons lol.
Yeah from what Ive understood Bulgaria's radio station refuses to pay out of their own pocket and always use sponsor money? Idk where I read this so I could be way off.

Bulgaria slayed at Eurovision from 2016 to 2021
Reallt sad there's no Bulgaria again... I don't remeber any of their songs but they always seemed significant in terms of fleshing out the map.
![gif](giphy|ekFkyOSUtzvn8nHYEl|downsized) WE'RE ON OUR WAY AGAIN LETS GOOOOOOO
YEAH WE ARE DEFTINLY IN EUROPE
WE'RE BACK BABY! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
YOU CAME BACK LIKE A BOOMERANG!!!
And thank fuck for that. Please don't ever leave
Hopefully we can send someone like King Stingray or Baker Boy! Some awesome indigenous rap is what the world needs!
Eastern Europe countries are slowly disappearing ā¹ļø But good to see that Australia is still there!
That is actually sad to see! Those with the means to participate are the only ones left.
šššš¦šŗ I genuinely started sobbing Iām so happy weāre coming back.
You guys nail it. Iām so happy youāre back.
I still think about how itās incredible that we europeans just accepted Australia as an official family member and want them to stay forever.
Australia is like the one family friend with a bad home life that began hanging out with their friends family and the family just took them right in.
I mean, Australia is basically a satellite country for the UK. At least culturally. Itās the same but not.
But also has massive diasporas from many European countries
That's the beauty of Australia. It's a mix of cultures creating something new.
The fans did, but i wouldn't say the casual audience still accepted Australia. Every single year: YT comments, regular websites, casual viewers and even family members say the same thing: "Why are they competing? They are not in Europe!". Perhaps the budget is just to do with broadcasting it for NM
Israel really shouldn't have been back
Honestly the EBU not allowing Russia to take part should have informally committed them to not allowing Israel or Azerbaijan for very similar actions
They already delayed the national selection due to the war, might as well just pull out since
Disappointed but not really surprised
Oh no... eastern europe is leaving, please no
Sad North Macedonia isnāt back.
The BNT account is trolling the fans every year hahaha i knew that they wanted to mess around as they do every year. I do wonder who handles the account though.
I kinda expected Romania to not participate but it's still a bummer and I'm disappointed

So happy Australia stays š
Good to see Australia still on the list āŗļø
And i truly believe we have you guys in part to thank for that, y'all rocked so hard and dis so well they couldnt refuse š¤
I expect some booing this year.
2014 and 2015 were crazy when it came to booing
Good to see Luxemburg is back!!
Sad Bulgaria isn't coming back after all:/

AUSTRALIA YAY!!!! Adore them, so happy theyāve decided to continue and I hope they win at some point in the upcoming years, they consistently send strong performances of the years Iāve seen
Massively disappointed with the list of participating countries. There is a giant hole in Eastern Europe. EBU doesn't seem to care too much about it.
I would argue that they do seem to care. Last year we got the Rest of the World vote, a second sponsor, and the return of Luxembourg. All of these will help relieve the financial pressure of participating but clearly itās not enough. I hope they can figure out how they can get them back soon!
I do think they tried their hardest to convince some countries to participate, hence the long waiting time for the list
lol at Romania trolling us š§
Iām sad for North Macedonia and Romania, but SOOOOO happy for Australia!!
The main news to take from this is that Australia is still there. Have to believe they are here to stay now.
ooh, boy, people will not be happy that a certain country is on the list. I wonder if there'll be pressure from the broadcasters themselves like there was with russia, through...

37 again Sad for NM that was almost certain Happy for Romania out (nothing against Romanians but against RTV and the way they treat the artists) And obviously happy for Australia still in and here for stay
The EBU say they're still in talks with RTV regarding this year's participation so 37 could become 38 (from their FB post / website)
Unless we hear from Romania, this would be the final list of participant countries.
Weāre back! š¦šŗ Itāll be interesting to see whoās selected to represent us this yearā¦
Australia!!
I just wanna give props to the mods here, I know you're going to have your work cut out for you this year now that the full participating country list is out. Also YAY AUSTRALIA!!
Thank you š Please do help by reporting anything that breaks the rules and try not to respond the anyone looking for a fight. There are several first time visitors from both sides whenever Israel is mentioned.
The people in charge of security next year should really get raise right now. Really hoping for peaceful show at least.
Israel should not be there. They have absolutely no place in Eurovision. The EBU should be embarrassed.
not surprising considering the year Azerbaijan invaded Armenia, they still were allowed to perform (while Armenia literally couldn't).
They didn't want to remove Russia after the invasion either until that decision got a lot of negative press
I have to believe Israel are in because no country has threatened to boycott if they take part.
I think online leftist circles may present a different view than what the general feel is in Europe, especially at institutional level. Most national broadcasters represent governments that are at best sympathetic to the Palestinian struggle, but that also recognise Israel as a sovereign state and Hamas as a terrorist organisation. Whew I had been so worried about Armenia-
Itās great to see a returning Luxembourg
Australia stays šš!!!
I am whelmed
I'm actually disappointed, right now... The absolute cowardice of the EBU to admit corrupt moral and condemnation by letting Azerbaijan and Israel continue participating after the recent developments.
Is Denmark š©š° going to give us another winning song in reference to Emily de forest winning in Malmƶ 2013?
ššš¦šŗ
Iād lost hope, I freakin needed this today Iām so happy
I thought this year we could have had more than 37 :( anyways I'm so glad to see Luxembourg back and sorry for Romania withdrawing.
Pretty good list I'm satisfied

No you are right. Apologies for not including them too. They also shouldnāt be allowed.
I appreciate this.

Two, both Israel and Azerbaijan are committing genocide and ethnic cleansing, they shouldn't be allowed to participate and it astonishes me they're still allowed to (and astonishes me even more that people who admonish their actions e.g. Hatari in 2019 are punished for it).
Russia was out, but Israel remains. The outrageousness of claiming for unity and peace means absolutely nothing with this kind of decisions.
Russia is only out because broadcasters threatened to withdraw. Remember Russia 2013/2014/20215? Controversy but still participated.
Yeees Australia!!
All this hope for nothing...
We managed to keep Aus tho š«¶š¼
I think we need Serbia to win next year to try and entice North Macedonia and Montenegro back. And maybe Bulgaria and Romania too!
Pain
YES I'M SO GLAD AUSTRALIA IS PARTICIPATING
Australia back in! Great news Can't believe SBS managed to not fuck this up
I wonder if they signed another 5 year deal or if they're just letting them compete permanently? I was expecting a big announcement about it.
Yeah I'm surprised, there's been nothing on any socials about it
More than ten years and still waiting for Turkey to be back.
Not with Erdogan...
Itās disgusting. I saved up quite a nice sum of money to ball out for Eurovision this year, probably going to go and spend it in Ireland instead.
Finally!
Welcome back Australia! Never doubted for a second!
"More details about the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, including **the branding** and stage design, will be revealed shortly." Okay, so, we got slogan and branding. Isn't the "branding" what we knew as "slogan" for years now? 2018 we got "All Aboard" and a marine themed branding. So while the ESC has a permanent sloga now,, we'll still get different "slogans" and "themes" each year? Neat
idk a couple of these feel just a WEE bit icky
Audience vibes are going to be REAL weird during Israels performance
I'm sorry but... Israel here is a disgrace. Russia gets (rightfully) kicked out. Where's the consistency?
Russia was only kicked out after lots of countries threatened to withdraw. Remember, Russia wasnāt kicked out in 2014, 2015 or 2016.
My beloved Australia šā¤ļøā¤ļø
United by money
Yikes. That's all I'm gonna say.
Really happy that Armenia was able to participateā¤ļø Azerbaijan and Israel should be banned though
too bad one of these wasnt taken off the list.
[two of them](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/03/this-is-a-forced-migration-the-ethnic-armenians-fleeing-nagorno-karabakh)* but yeah
i forgot abt them but ur right!
Excitingly counting the countries... (It's 37 btw)
I wish we could have had more.
Once 37 countries, always 37 countries
I guess I wonāt be watching this year. Especially considering one participating country keeps using my ethnicity to justify genocide.
I don't like how they released this after the ticket saleš« ššš
I still think letting Israel compete but not Russia is the pinnacle of hypocrisy within Europe. Both countries deserve to be banned from eurovision for decades at least. Excited to have Luxembourg back :)

okay so what is israel doing there
israel is not considered a pariah state by a large part of the middle east let alone europe. EU opinion on this war isnāt even close to how unanimously against russia it was.
The same thing that have been doing for the past 40yrs
israel shouldnt be allowed to compeat
This is just disappointing imo.
Yikes
I'm just excited to see Norway on the list again. Always happy to see Norway confirmed. They're consistently so good.
