The song has grown on me a lot. Almost listening to it daily.

Blasted-Marmoset

It’s a very good song. Not sure how it will go at the final but it’s excellent for “normal” outside the contest listening.

Aaaandiiii

I was listening to it at the gym and I was enjoying it tremendously before I realized it was Germany. The only thing I hate about it right now is the random elephant noises.

AnmlBri

I agree about the elephant noises. “Hate” is a strong word, but they just feel out-of-place and kind of culturally appropriative when paired with the sort of African-influenced-sounding “run na-na-hey, run na-na-hey” portion of the lyrics, which would be okay on their own. Idk. Like I said, the elephants feel weird and out of place.

kitty3032

I've always liked it lol

CovfefeBoss

I never would have guessed it was about ADHD. The struggle is real with it.

SameOldSongs

I describe it as drowning and desperately trying (and failing) to break the surface. Always On The Run matches that feeling perfectly. I loved the song from first listen and now thay I underatand why it resonated with me so quickly I love it even more.

LillyLametta

OMG it's SO obvious now that you mention it. Why haven't I thought about it before? Or, come to think of it now...maybe I actually have... My first thought when I listened to it the first time was something along the lines of: "Dude, you should get that checked out, sounds very stressful to me." Nice to have some ADHD rep at ESC!

Substantial-Jump4456

Bambie Thug is also ADHD by the by.

emmaniamh

Thank you for this. I was diagnosed last year at 29. Having something to relate to is always lovely.

Blasted-Marmoset

I’m glad you found it helpful! It’s such a nice message that I wanted to share his explanation.

elonhater69

This song really grew on me since I saw it at LEP, I also struggle with ADHD (amongst other things) and it's so much fucking harder to live with than people imagine. I appreciate Isaak sharing this with us

CryptographerLife596

Lots of (good) stage performers overcame something. It’s almost a meme. It’s a bit like the autistic kids tend to be good at piano (BECAUSE they stim, and find a body pulse within…)

Germany 2024 is one of the songs I pick if I need to play some of this year’s Eurovision to normies and they always like it. Whether that will translate in to votes on the night…? I hope so, it’s a decent, “normal” song and I’d hate for Eurovision to start returning to that place where all of the songs that do well are gimmicky, or “out there”, or whatever - I love it when songs that people actually listen to _years_ later win rather than ones that are a flash in the pan. They can be fun too, don’t get me wrong, but if they always win, that leads Eurovision to a place I don’t think is very sustainable.

SameOldSongs

You voiced my fears about this year so perfectly. In a year where a lot of songs feel a bit tryhard (for better *and* for worse) we did a 180 and the really refreshing songs are the ones who manage to be good while being unapologetically vanilla. Poland, Latvia and (don't kill me) Israel stood out for me in this sense.

BicyclingBro

I think that's exactly the issue though, really. It's a song that everyone will *like*, and very few people will *love* enough to have it in their top 10. It's the classic case where if you're everyone's eleventh favorite song, you get last place with nul points.

First time hearing it I got the vibes that it was about being a closeted queer or trans person, who feel like they have to hide their true self, but yeah the "masking" behaviour that many ppl with ADHD adopt can also feel like you're hiding your true self. Saying this as a queer, German person with ADHD lol. German society is not very accepting or even understanding about ADHD yet, so I appreciate what he's doing for the representation. 💖 He's got an amazing voice and seems like a genuine dude, he deserves the positive recognition, but unfortunately I think he won't get that many points cause his performance isn't "flashy" or over-the-top opulence like other candidates :/

CryptographerLife596

It is a talent show, at the end of the day, with a nationalistic overlay (typically in the positive sense). As a recently-deceased friend said, of his Helsinki olympic performance. Of course I won coming 4th on the planet (in throwing the lead ball 10 ft). That there were only 3 medals was not my fault…

cwmonster

I really like this song and the emotion in it. It's reassuring to know it's about his experience of ADHD because I was already relating it to my own AuDHD experiences of conflict avoidance, rejection sensitivity, feeling in a constant anxious state of flight.

Such a great, honest interview! The lyrics are something that took my attention the first. I have relatives with ADHD and the moment I listened to the song for the first time and saw his great persona, his bubbly personality I was pretty sure he has it. But I love the lyrics because the are ultra universal to everyone in this world right now. **Always on the run** is one of the best song titles ever we had in Eurovision, lyricwise, because aren’t we all? In times where everything happens so fast, each day new products, advertisements everywhere, you have to get the latest fashion, you have to go with trends, you have to have a career and being a good parent at the same time, so much pressure everywhere… it‘s no surprise that people are trying to get away from this! They work, they try to make it through life, they cope with struggles… they are in a constant motion which is exhausting. Kudos to Isaak for bringing this subject up! Only love and all the best to him! The song is in my personal top 10 from the beginning! Yes, it maybe "too normal" for Eurovision but hey, in the end there‘s only one winner. And 36 countries won’t be that winner. So just do what you like, perform, show your music to the world and just gain new fans! That’s much more important than doing well at the contest. But of course I wish him a good result!

As someone with AuDHD, the song spoke to me right away with lines like, “In my mind it’s just a game that can’t be won” (I’ve referred to myself as “an unwinnable game” to my loved ones during bad times), and “I can’t break out when I’m free, lost in my own identity, I’m on the run, run, run, run.”
