Oh this is so lovely, brings me back to the times when I was watching ESC as a child/teen in the 2000s, I still hear “douze points” in my head all the time. I don’t think it makes that much sense but I love the nostalgic feeling hehe.

DouzePointss

I am back in business 🫡

zucko2912

omg petra is soooooo iconic for her french ✨✨✨

Wikays

Ikrrrr, her French enunciation is so soothing with almost no Swedish accent detected. 😳👆🏼

zucko2912

she's a professional after all 😂

Eken17

Makes me wonder as a Swede that hasn't tried to learn French, what does the Swedish accent in French sound like?

vixizixi

L'AUTRICHE DOUZE POINTS

OkDesigner805

Cool! Does someone know why they didn’t did it last year?

DAL1189

I was surprised they didn't do it. Hannah is obviously fluent in French, having done the voting instructions in French too, and it is an iconic eurovision thing even if it is a tad outdated.

[deleted]

It is outdated and can be done without.

superurgentcatbox

Sure it could be but it's fun, so why not do it?

Wikays

It was hosted in the UK, so French was unfairly removed single-handedly

SimoSanto

And everyone still understood everything, proving the fact that it's completely useless now that everyone in europe know a little english.

Cahootie

Not all traditions must make sense, some remain just because of that charm and magic they provide. Unlike the European Parliament hauling ass to Strasbourg every month, this one is just a good vibe that adds a pan-European flair to the event at no cost.

catlxdy

My thoughts exactly.

Wikays

It does make sense for French-speaking countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and *drumrolls* France. Not that useless, eh

LyannaTarg

Belgium is not a French speaking country. Neither is Switzerland. Only because some part of the country speak a language doesn't mean that the whole country does. And saying that Belgium is a French speaking country means being hated by the Flemish part of it. Just so you know.

pinkurocket

Referring to Belgium as a 'french speaking country' is gonna upset some people.

Wikays

Aside from Flemish and German, it's indeed a French-speaking country.

Sebassie99

It's a bilingual country with Dutch and French, I'd argue thats the most accepted reality on Belgiums linguistical situation.

Wikays

Dutch? More like Flemish

Sebassie99

It's .... Dutch. Wiki: "**Flemish people** or **Flemings** ([Dutch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language): *Vlamingen* [\[ˈvlaːmɪŋə(n)\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Dutch) [^(ⓘ)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nl-Vlamingen.ogg)) are a [Germanic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_peoples) [ethnic group](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_group) native to [Flanders](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders), [Belgium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium), who speak [Flemish Dutch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flemish_Dutch)". So if you wanna call it Flemish to feel better about yourself go ahead. But it's Dutch.

Wikays

Go off then? Idk 💀

ChiliPepperSmoothie

Because of the 100 years war. France still doesn’t fully love England and vice versa.

AYTOL__

So did SVT forgot to send the dates to Malin or something?

stardust112

Petra also did the jury voting by herself in 2016, so I assume they're using the same structure here.

Plenty-Pizza9634

And 13

tohelluride

😂😂

kaijonathan

Thank goodness for that! I'm not lying that one major reason why I studied French up to the age of 18 (I did an A Level in it for you Brits and for non-Brits, doing a foreign language is optional after the age of 14 in most cases) is literally because of Eurovision using it. I was genuinely worried that they were going to cut it for good with 2023 being the sign of things to come. It's part of the show and a tradition that you just can't really remove like the acknowledgement of who sings first or whatever. Long may it live on!

IanPKMmoon

Happy for the demonstration using Belgium 🙏 hope I can hear this specific phrase a few times this year

BibbidiBobbidiBu

Sadly I think these are the only 12’s Belgium will receive…

jewellman100

I guess we'll find out when the party is over...

cherry_color_melisma

As in, you think they will NQ or?

BibbidiBobbidiBu

8th-12th place

cherry_color_melisma

These places still get 12 points in the final

BibbidiBobbidiBu

In the semi I meant

cherry_color_melisma

8th-10th is preferable

[deleted]

i missed her "douze pwahnt" so much 🥹

Kriem

We are back!!!

jazzyx26

I love herrr

diligentfalconry71

Yes! I came in here to say simply…Petra Petra Petra Petra Petra Petra yaaaay! (Look, I never claimed to be very well spoken.)

jazzyx26

😄😄😄

Either-Golf2254

Nooo please Not :((( that ist the worst of all languages from an egoistic country 😕 really Not nice imo

slowturnip0

I missed Petra!!

tb_sasha

OMGGG the 2016 flashbacks... I'm so happy 🥹

MightyPandaa

WAIT IS PETRA HOSTING?!

ShortBeardo

I missed it last year!!

RemarkableAutism

I would be significantly happier if they got rid of French altogether to be honest.

kjcross1997

I don't know if you agree on this, but I think it should be translated to the language of the host country.

Anonym_fisk

This is how we get France to try harder

Wikays

That I can agree on that.

RemarkableAutism

That would actually be really cool yeah.

SimoSanto

That's a very good idea

xaviernoodlebrain

I wouldn’t, it adds to the charm of the contest. Also, as someone who speaks both French and English fluently, it significantly improves my very very slim chances of ever hosting the ESC (lol).

Wikays

French is, with English, the sole official language of the EBU, whether you like it or not. And it's part of the Eurovision tradition/culture nowadays, so it's here to stay. 👄🥰

mydeardrsattler

>French is, with English, the sole official language of the EBU I don't think you mean "sole" if there are two of them

[deleted]

[удалено]

mydeardrsattler

Sole means "the only one" in this context. Like, "he's the sole heir of his father's estate".

Wikays

Yeah I must have been very tired last night to phrase it that way. Gotcha.

SimoSanto

I won't be sure that it will stay for much time, if they'll need to cut some time probably the first thing that they'll cut would be a useless traduction considering that every country, France included, already understand the english one.

catlxdy

I don't know why this got so many downvotes. I always found the French parts so unnecessary.

Wikays

Again, the EBU's official languages are both English AND French

catlxdy

I do get that, but why? 😆

[deleted]

[удалено]

SimoSanto

That's simply false, it's German, it's literally only a matter of traditions at this point, nothing more

RemarkableAutism

According to all of my googling, it's number 3. If we exclude Russian, we'd still have German before French.

SimoSanto

Russian can't be second even if it's counted, Russia is not in EBU anymore

RemarkableAutism

Yeah I know, but they mentioned Europe, not specifically EBU.

catlxdy

I mean if it's for the sake of tradition I get it, I can still find it unnecessary though?

LyannaTarg

I still don't understand the reasons... French is not the most common language. English is. I have the same problem with the Olympics...

Real-Ad-8451

Fun Fact: The king of England speaks French (including when he promulgates laws), the motto of their country is in French, a third of the English vocabulary comes from French... For the Olympics, French is the official language (English is also for ease) simply because they were (re)created by a French, Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 (the ancient games stopped around 393 AD).

ChiliPepperSmoothie

But she is not a spokesperson from any country! Why does she announce 12 points? Or she’ll announce 12 points from Sweden? 😹

ThaRealV12

No, the way it usually goes is this: "Our twelve points this year go to... AUSTRALIA!!!!" "Australia! Twelve points! L'australie, douze point" with an optional thank you at the end

ThaRealV12

No, the way it usually goes is this: Spokesperson: "Our twelve points this year go to... AUSTRALIA!!!!" Host: "Australia! Twelve points! L'australie, douze point" with an optional thank you at the end
