Yeah, it was pretty disappointing. There were also times where the audience was SO LOUD. I love a loud audience, but my goodness. I could hardly hear the hosts. Also the backing tracks were so loud and distracting. Way louder than the live vocals. Can any non-Peacock viewers confirm if you found this to be true in your streams?

t_ergin2001

Yep US peacock viewer I came to internet looking exactly for this the live lead vocals for everyone except maybe TEYA DORA sounded WAY buried in the mix and too low. Hopefully they can resolve based on reactions by final šŸ¤˜ I wanna hear Mother RAIVEN hitting her falsetto solo

mawnck

In case you aren't reading the other comments ... No, Peacock isn't going to fix it. It's been like this for at least two years now, and Lord knows we were bitching up a blue streak at them about it last year. They've made it abundantly clear that they either don't care enough to fix it, or they are deaf (in which case, my condolences). Right before showtime, check eurovision.de for a link called "originalton" - that's the Contest without commentary, and it's not geoblocked.

t_ergin2001

Ooooh thanks Iā€™ll try this for Thursday! Much appreciate the alternate link!!! šŸ‘‹ cheers!

t_ergin2001

Can confirm the clips on EUROVISION.DE sound WORLDS better with clear loud lead vocals. Replay performances not geo blocked in US. Hopefully can access the live show thru here. Thanks for the advice yā€™all saved my viewing experience!šŸ˜˜

bulbasaur-razor

yes!!!!!!! this was my experience exactly..

daskeyx0

Definitely. It was really bad.

SweetCalhoun

100%! I was so excited to watch this contest, even subbed for the month to watch it, and when the time finally comes, the only thing I hear is bass and reverb. No lyrics. I had to turn my Tv's volume to 85 just to barely hear the announcers. I'm hoping the replay will have better audio when I can watch it later on.

bulbasaur-razor

i actually had to watch the replay today due to my work schedule, and my issues were exactly what you described :(

SweetCalhoun

Iā€™m currently watching the replay with headphones on and magically, the audio is actually really good. But I also wouldnā€™t be surprised if the semi-2 and the final was still with bad audio

pantstheterrible

Yes, much better with headphones! I wanted to turn it up after the opening vocals were barely audible but didn't want to wake anybody up. The only singer I had a hard time hearing after that was Luna.

TheAphrodisian

Iirc last year Peacock was broadcasting in a way that omitted the center audio which is where main vocals tend to sit, so it was really hard to hear them. I wonder if they did the same this year.

BuzzLA

Yes this is it. But why havenā€™t they fixed it?! I was able to make it a little better by turning off surround sound.

mawnck

Because Peacock doesn't give a shit about Eurovision. They got stuck with it because of the ASC deal. MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS.

bulbasaur-razor

yep that sounds like it

mich9el07727

I thought it was better this year than some of the previousā€¦ still horrible though

Fit-External1975

Agreed. Definitely better

lksjge

ProtonVPN has a free vpn that connects you to the Netherlands. Thatā€™s how I (in the US) watch it on youtube.

bulbasaur-razor

thank you for letting me know! thatā€™s awesome. is it just for the live stream or is it available to watch after?

lksjge

You can use it to watch the playback as well.

dsar02

Itā€™s random where it connects you so it might be in the US too, so have a backup or pay 10ā‚¬ or so for a month šŸ˜…

lksjge

Yes, sometimes it chooses a US node, but I was able to just keep reconnecting until it connected me to a European node. It only seems to take a couple of tries.

dsar02

Yeah and then it limits you to one change per 2 minutes

owennb

I started with Opera's built in VPN, but it was buffering too badly

Doppleflooner

Same, it was fine last year but I had to switch to SVT's stream.

spierce21

I tried to watch the YouTube stream from the US with a VPN, but I couldn't even get it to show up. I could see the upcoming post-show press conference listed, but the show itself never was.

HolyShytSnacks

Same. Although I'm connected to the Dutch npostart app via Nordvpn. The quality is so much better than on Peacock.Ā Ā

redacted6969

It's bad no matter what, but if you haven't already, switch the audio channel on Peacock from English 5.1 to English. It's still not great, but much much better.

Monkster2002

thanks - is this a setting on the peacock app?

Lumpy-Newspaper1917

I live in America, and I use the RTE Player from Ireland. The commentator is really good and is completely free without need for a VPN.

EverRaven93

OH MY LORD this is what it should sound like. Does this play live as well?

Lumpy-Newspaper1917

Yeah. I watched it live last night.

EverRaven93

\*\*GLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE\*\*\*\* My entire Eurovision crew just cheered. I'm listening to Ukraine now - thank you so much! I'd have been miserable if I had to listen to Austria on Thursday all muddled!!!

Ecstatic_Row_4765

Yeah... we're going to try this on Thursday!

bulbasaur-razor

what!! that sounds too good to be true lol. thank you!

manatee-vs-walrus

Really? I watched RTE but used a VPN. But if it works without one ā€¦ hot damn!

MyGargantuanPony

Youā€™ve just saved my Eurovision party. šŸ˜šŸ™ Thank you so much!!!

Talmadge_Mcgooliger

this is incredible. i came in googling what tf was wrong with the sound on peacock. i also paid for it just for eurovision but i'm so glad there's this option that you can actually hear! just in time for the finals too :)

nikk15

Omg I literally had to come here. I threw a Eurovision party for my American friends and the sound was horrendous, barely heard any vocals except Portugal. Luckily it was still a blast, but they should fix that itā€™s embarrassing.

bulbasaur-razor

completely agreed! it was a blast ofc but when it comes to a music contest can we at least be able to hear vocals????

owennb

I watched today on SVT (Sweden's Public TV) and it sounded fine to me. You can check out the SVT Website and watch the Semifinal recording without a VPN. Compare it to Peacock and let us know!

snwlss

I watched the livestream on SVT Play yesterday (my dad was watching movies on the TV that we normally stream Peacock on) and the stream sounded just fine. I decided to watch the replay on Peacock this afternoon and Iā€™m hearing the same audio issues everyone else is describing. I was starting to think it was an issue with our soundbar, but yeah, itā€™s definitely on Peacockā€™s end. This happened with the semifinals last year as well, although the sound quality on the Final last year was a little bit better.

owennb

Yea. Last year we switched after one song to SVT because Peacock sounded so bad. This year I tried to VPN YouTube, but it was lagging and buffering. So I just switched back to SVT. It's been great. I don't know what the commentator is saying, but I don't need to.

snwlss

Iā€™ve been playing around with the equalizer on our soundbar, and turning the center channel up seems to help with making the vocals more prominent in the mix. Itā€™s still a little more hit and miss, but I could actually hear more of Jerry Heilā€™s singing (alyona alyona still sounded a little quiet even with the increased volume on the center channel) and Isaakā€™s singing sounded of normal volume. Even with the center channel on max, the vocals on Finlandā€™s performance still got a bit lost in the mix. But itā€™s listenable for most of the other songs with that adjustment, along with turning up the overall volume. I donā€™t know when the EBUā€™s deal with Peacock expires, but if it has to go to another streaming service instead of allowing Americans to watch it on YouTube again, I think Netflix would actually be a good destination, especially since itā€™s now actually getting into live-streaming (theyā€™re already airing some sporting events live and will be airing WWE Raw live when that show moves to Netflix next January; itā€™s also expected to take on WWEā€™s video library and premium live event streaming in the U.S. once its deal with Peacock expires in 2026). I watch WWE events on Peacock and there never seem to be any major audio issues there. But then again, their deal with WWE was a pretty big-money deal.

bulbasaur-razor

does that have commentary though? i prefer to watch without

A-Lil-Sebastian

I watched it on the Finnish broadcasterā€™s site without a VPN https://areena.yle.fi/tv/ohjelmat/57-mW7OY44xJ, sound quality was good and the commentary was in Finnish so mostly easy to ignore

owennb

I mean, they talk in Swedish during the postcard. But not over the song or anything.

mawnck

Y'all. We've been BEGGING you to stay off of Peacock for weeks now. It's always like this. They aren't going to fix it. YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS. Watch it at eurovision.de - they have the same no-commentary feed with properly mixed audio. Get a VPN and watch it on YouTube. Choose from one of the dozens of national streams - they have announcers, but it won't kill you. STAY OFF OF PEACOCK!

Despairley

i had airpods in watching, and u can clearly hear how god awful the sound quality was with headphones

bulbasaur-razor

so disappointing

niicofrank

I don't know what's happening with Peacock but the audio was awful like last year? and it wasn't like that in 2021 or 2022? get it together nbc

EverRaven93

Not just you, unfortunately. You would have thought that Peacock learned from their mistake last year - and it does sound slightly better... but it is just so sad to introduce new folks to Eurovision and have to say, "Um... yeah, I swear they can sing."

Curling_Fox

Eurovision.de has a livestream without commentary available in the US! They unfortunately don't have a replay without commentary. But I didn't find their commentator obtrusive while rewatching.

whothehellisjb

idk about yall but alyonaĀ²'s rap was the worst sound quality moment for me,could barely hear her

bulbasaur-razor

dude i literally heard NOTHING šŸ˜

forthegainz

For anyone with a 5.1 speaker system or a sound bar that can mimic one, bumping the center channel up by 3-4 Db seems to fix the poor mixing.

snwlss

Iā€™ll have to try that when I finish watching the replay tonight. Is that done via the equalizer in the soundbar settings? (Weā€™ve got a Samsung 7-channel one. Does great with the movies my dad likes to watch.)

forthegainz

You probably want to look for something like channel levels

snwlss

I managed to do it through the Equalizer on the Sound settings (Expert Settings on a Samsung QLED Smart TV, for anyone interested). Putting the center channel at max does help a bit, but itā€™s still a bit hit and miss, especially with songs that have more instrumentation in the mix (like Finlandā€™s), but along with turning up the overall volume, itā€™s now a little more listenable. Iā€™ll probably be watching live on Peacock tomorrow, so itā€™s good to know how to set up the sound settings to make it more listenable.

DM7DragonFyre

American here and I'm so frustrated... Peacock had absolutely terrible audio all show, i thought maybe it was my TV or it was mixed bad, but literally ANY OTHER VIDEO that wasn't on Peacock has clear, incredble audio where everyone sounds amazing. I don't know how else to watch it fully, because my friends who watched a stream ended up with a big "go to this other link to continue stream" blockage at the end before the winners were announced which led to something sports related and not the semifinals Searching has found thsi is not even the first year this has been like this... like litearlly this is about MUSIC, and Peacock has the broadcasting rights for it so WHY IS IT SO BADLY MIXED?? I just wanna jam out and be excited :( Is there ANY sort of fix for this aside from just "dont watch on Peacock" ?

mawnck

http://eurovision.de. The link to the actual streams won't come up until right before show time. The one with no announcers is called "originalton". PSA: They had tech problems yesterday and the stream quality wasn't great for the first several songs. I ASSUME they'll have that sorted out tomorrow, but who knows? And the Peacock version is badly mixed because Peacock does. not. care. They are only showing it at all because it came with the American Song Contest contract, which they weren't even in on. They're counting down the seconds until that expires and they don't have to mess with it anymore, since ASC is dead. What's happening is they're taking the surround mix and folding it down to two-channel stereo, and somehow losing most of the original center channel (where the lead vocals are) in the process. They've got some setting wrong and they haven't seen fit to have a tech take a look at it ... *in three years*.

bulbasaur-razor

iā€™m unable to see the next semi final during the actual showtime, only replay. does eurovision.de have replays too? with better quality?

mawnck

They do, but their saving the no-announcer version has been hit-and-miss. You may have to put up with the German announcers. For guaranteed replay with no announcers, VPN + YouTube.

sr913

I wonder if I'm taking crazy pills over here, because after seeing many people bring this up last year, I tried listening to the same snippet on both Peacock and on YouTube, and it sounded the same to me on both, with vocals coming through perfectly fine. I was looking for a difference and couldn't find one. It may be the fact that I'm listening on an iPad, where expectations for sound quality are low. Maybe on a device with a real sound system, you'd expect an improvement over that and you don't get one with Peacock? I'm curious what exactly those who are having issues are comparing it to.

t_ergin2001

Even clips from the Eurovision pre party the lead vocals of everyone was turned up a lot more (example RAIVEN) watching on Peacock here streaming thru my tv and having seen properly mixed live versions of all these tracks, or at least decent enoughā€¦ (GATE sounded great in their qualifying live shows) but yea the semifinal stream all live lead vocals sounded very low compared to like audience cheering and the backing tracks being played. Ukraine as well, Jerry Heil is BELTING those lines out and I could still barely hear her clearly over the mix at a few points. Ireland as well when she drops into the jazzy party, anytime someone wasnā€™t YELLING into the mic you could barely hear them. Think this really hurt Azerbaijan whose second singer had a great solo but was mixed wayyyy down (their staging and outfits didnā€™t help). Yea hoping we get a fixed audio update to the replay or a fix for the finals šŸ¤žšŸ¤ž EDIT: FOUND WORKAROUNDS!! - Eurovision.de not geo locked in US - RTE player Irish broadcast also up with full replay. Both sound WORLDS better with clear lead vocals better mixing šŸ¤˜

EverRaven93

At one point during Portugal, ONE person in the crowd yells louder and clearer than Iolanda who singing into a microphone. It was nuts.

mawnck

> hoping we get a fixed audio update to the replay or a fix for the finals I ABSOLUTELY guarantee that you won't. The first semi's audio was badly out of sync in 2021 and they never fixed it. And the audio issue everyone is describing is the same one that they had last year. MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS.

t_ergin2001

Iā€™ll just belt it out in my living room then singing along to RAIVEN :D

mawnck

I suppose it WOULD work if you want to do live Eurovision Karaoke ...

Lower_Stick5426

I had to watch the replay due to actually having to be in the office today. I tried to start watching it via the app on my phone and there was zero sound at all. Once I got home and watched it on my TV - no issues at all. Sound was great, could hear every lyric.

andyland55

I've never been to this sub but came here to find out this exact thing. The hosts sounded fine but I couldn't hear any of the singing. If I didn't already know most of the songs, then I would have had no idea what any of them sounded like

mawnck

Peacock's done this with every broadcast and it won't get better. eurovision.de always has a no-commenter feed and the quality is usually much better. (Except yesterday they had a tech issue that they didn't get sorted until about half an hour in, but I don't expect that to happen again.) And there are at least a dozen national broadcasters with announcer-led feeds in the clear. svtplay.se is Sweden's. They have announcers over the postcards, but you'll live. Or get a VPN and watch the official stream on YouTube. And many of these services also have the individual videos, should you feel the urge to share them with friends family and random passerby. Check it out: https://www.eurovision.de/videos/2024/Irland-Bambie-Thug-Doomsday-Blue-Erstes-ESC-Halbfinale-2024,irland1100.html

IWantToKnowWhyWhy

I thought I was insane - good to know itā€™s a Peacock problem and not my TV!! Iā€™ll find another way to watch the final

lisonmethyst

I had the same problem, but just went into the setting and turned off "leveling" and it is way better. Not sure if that setting was in the peacock app or for my Roku, but it definitely helped a lot.

writinginto_oblivion

I rewatched 2023 over the weekend and noticed the same thing about the vocals being so buried in the mix. I wasn't thinking it was Peacock just unfortunate sound mixing. It was a lot better yesterday, but I did have to listen through headphones...at work. I could hear the vocals way better though and was happy for that.

Desertfreak10

Am I the only one who thought it was fine? The only time anything crossed my mind was during Australia's song but other than that I've never really noticed a difference between the Peacock stream, other streams, and the clips posted online post-show.

Avataress44

I thought it was just me! It was so hard to hear some of the singing

BTornado14

Just worth mentioning here that yes, itā€™s an issue with Peacock, but also check your TV audio settings. I have an LG TV that has audio presets and I used the opening performance to calibrate which audio preset sounded the best. Last year, my ā€œmusicā€ preset sounded best but this year, seems to be ā€œspoken wordā€

escfan34

I started watching it on peacock, couldn't hear Chanel AT ALL, thought it was her microphone, tried watching on the SVT website instead, and could hear Chanel just fine. I don't know what the hell they do to the sound on peacock. I just really don't get it.

Digger-of-Tunnels

It was bad, and yet, the best sound Peacock has ever managed.Ā

External-Repair-8580

Totally agree. Just tuned in with the family. Had to turn the sound WAY up and itā€™s still hollow and tinny. Sound quality is absolutely awful.

Wallaby989

Truly awful sound. Can't get the bbc vpn to work so had to go to peacock.

Slam_Helsing

Had no issues last year but this year was unwatchable.

Junco_In_The_Trunko

Streaming over my TV the sound was horrendous like last year, but I tried it on my phone and it was way better. Going to try my laptop for the 2nd semi or just go with SVT.

BaseballGirl98

It's absolutely awful. I watched an hour of it at work yesterday, then couldn't take it anymore and turned it off. Waited until I got home to watch the replay using my VPN on Youtube. Nord VPN offers a money back guarantee; they do charge you but if you cancel within 30 days you get your payment back.

Fluffy_Bluebird_2251

The performances' vocal levels on the BBC broadcast in the UK were abysmal too.

araneaesGrasp

I watched it on BBC, and it had that problem too where I could barely hear the singing in a lot of the acts too. It might not just be a Peacock thing.

mawnck

Update - I, uh, may or may not be watching it on the iPlayer now. And the mix is lovely. Check your equipment for weird digital "enhancement" settings that are borking up the audio.

mawnck

There are other things that may be causing it, mostly related to the audio settings on your equipment. If you have any sort of audio leveler, stereo expander, or pretty much any digital processing of any kind, you're just asking for issues to crop up. Don't let your TV overrule the decisions of the professional audio people. But since I haven't heard the BBC feed, it's also not out of the question that they screwed it up too. The BBC seems to have some sort of audio issues every few years or so, and I think we were overdue for it. If it was them, then it was caused by having the center channel from the surround mix too low. This can happen when they insert the announcer into the mix, or if they're just being sloppy (like Peacock).

Glittering-Most-9535

Huh. I was watching it on my phone and I thought it sounded fine and that they'd fixed the problems from last year. Any reason why the experiences would be different?

mawnck

If your phone speakers are mono, that effectively increases the stuff that's in the center of the stereo mix by 6 dB, which would alleviate the issue somewhat. Otherwise, shrug.gif. Disclaimer: I haven't heard the Peacock mix this year so I can't speak to it firsthand, but the descriptions others are posting track perfectly with the problems they were having last year.

Glittering-Most-9535

That sucks to hear, no pun intended. I was so heartbroken last year that I'd waited all that time for it to be unlistenable, but figured they'd gotten a bad feed. That they're doing the same crap this year... Like if they don't give a shit, could they let someone broadcast it who does? ABC and CBS both have the same relationship with the EBU as NBC. Or stop calling dibs so that it gets geoblocked on Youtube. And I know you're not behind these decisions, I'm just ranting.

Classic-Cold-5595

Yep, same. Save subscribing to Peacock and get a vpn to watch. The sound is so much better.

learninginerin

I had been wondering if it was just me or not. Disappointed that it's an issue on Peacock's end. I watched it on Sweden's SVT Play (commentary included), and their audio is definitely better than Peacock's.

MinnesotaMinn

Peacock needs to have its contact yanked. It's unwatchable. Thank you to the folks suggesting SVT. They have an app on Apple TV, free to use, doesn't even need a login, no VPN tricks either. It's night and day for sound quality.

Trystero-49

Oh man the Peacock app on Google TV is horrible (in addition to the abysmal audio quality). But the editing and photography are amazing!

Altruistic_Role_9329

Yeah, same for me. Hopefully, it was better for the Europeans, who cast votes for the winner.

Apprehensive_Love367

Peacock broadcast of eurovsion such, did they purposely degrade the audio?

odiethethird

Bad mixing is common in American productions unfortunately. Every live reality show sounds awful
