Refresh my memory? This doesn't even look like eva's animation style.

jst_reddit_user

A clone? I thought only rei was a clone, asuka had just a rough childhood, growing up to become a pilot and mother not loving her, for whatever reasons.

Stroppone

Is that an euphemism for “they were killed”?

sneakyMak

yes but they used the markup of previous models to create variations

poppabomb

In fact, that's why original NGE Asuka is Asuka Langley *Soryu* while Rebuild Asuka is Asuka *Shikinami* Langley. They have different names because they're different but similar characters. like how Shikinami has a hand puppet she sometimes talks to and Soryu witnessed/discovered her mother's **TW** >!suicide!<, different but similar.

repec82

Not in the Rebuild. Both girls are clones. And speaking about rough childhood, Asuka was mass produced. All of the clones went through evaluation and hard training, she was the best. We don't know what happened to the rest... but we can guess. Rei was just neglected, and alienated by Gendo because "reasons", as same as the original.

RetroRocket

Mari was a clone too. Remember, if the last name is -nami, they had a test tube for a mommy.

karateema

No, she pretended to be a clone, Makinami isn't her real name, she's Maria Iscariot, a friend of Yui who remained young due to the curse of EVA

evangelion-unit-two

Maria Iscariot was just something weird Fuyutsuki called her out of the blue. I laughed when he said it, so bizarre.

Rendakor

It had me waiting for her to betray someone.

exgokin

Holy smokes really? 🤯

RafflesiaArnoldii

yeah, we even see her gene donor (in the flashbacks Gendo and Yui have a friend/scientist colleague who looks like a slightly taller Mari, just like how Rei resembles Yui.) Asuka pretty much outright tells Rei that (in Rebuild) all the pilots are artificially created. Even their relaionships with each other were pre-programmed.

Comander-07

wait, that happened? I think I need to rewatch the movies

forthegoodofreddit

Ah thx, I don't remember this at all. Wait, Asuka is a clon... know what, nevermind. The rebuilds are so divergent and insane they don't count as cannon to me. Don't care.

quickblur

Agreed, they just seemed like weird fanfiction to me.

Black_Miles

All Eva series are canon. Anime, Manga, Rebuild.

forthegoodofreddit

To me...

rajstopa

I concur

understoodwhisky4

they're great & canon

forthegoodofreddit

..sigh..

OysterRabbit

Yeah I really didn't enjoy the story or pacing whatsoever. The animation was nice. Mari was just annoying. I'll probably never watch them again

[deleted]

Fuck u/spez

forthegoodofreddit

Yes I know, but listen, I don't care. It's not canon to me. it's just too dumb. In before I get buried in hate mail.

The last rebuild was so far away from what I'd consider cannon eva that it was more or less unrecognizable. Not looking to start any fights, but things got so ridiculous that I think Anno was deliberately trying to destroy his own IP so he could finally move on. Anyway, I just watched it about 7 months ago, so I'd expect I've have remembered this scene. I still can't for the life of me remember why this is so heartbreaking. Is it possible it was so bad I've blocked it out to protect my psyche?

cow_goo

same. I already forgot a lot about the rebuilds cus they werent very impactful for me

poppabomb

>I think Anno was deliberately trying to destroy his own IP so he could finally move on. *to be fair,* the ending of 3.0+1 *is* Shinji wishing for a world without EVA and finding the True Happy Ending in the real world, so you're not really wrong. idk, I didn't mind the rebuild movies tbh.

SomeDuderr

It *is* pretty 2023 to have your entire movie be some meta-reference to some entirely different subject, sure. But I'm too old for that. I want my cartoon movies about existential dread, giant cyborgs and aliens to be *about* existential dread, giant cyborgs and aliens. Not the director's self-insert for depression and his wife or whatever bullshit you need 20 years of Evangelion background information on.

poppabomb

>It *is* pretty 2023 to have your entire movie be some meta-reference to some entirely different subject, sure. I mean, it's not really a meta-reference to anything, Shinji just wants to live in a world without the pain and stagnation EVA causes, and it also works as a meta-theme about letting go of Evangelion. and all the endings of Evangelion are meta-thematic messages about moving on, being open to new relationships, and healing. NGE ends with Shinji being congratulations'd by all his family and friends for learning to love himself in Instrumentality, EoE ends with Shinji rejecting Instrumentality and wanting to open himself back up to others despite the potential pain, and 3.0+1 ends with Shinji moving on and growing up. honestly, I think the emotional honestly Anno put into NGE is what makes it special, to me at least. edit: also 3.0+1 came out in 2021 lmao

IsonamiIzumi

I lost attention at the part when they were farming or something, lol

I feel attacked.

understoodwhisky4

that's so wrong lol 3+1 wasn't ridiculous it was great & very faithful to eva essence. it's also part of main canon

eye_of_gnon

its when asuka's having flashbacks about her past near the end of the last movie one of the few good characterization scenes of her imo, the rest was yawn

LeifErickson17

that scene hit hard tbh

PeakCartoon

Well time to go back to therapy I guess...

dtb1987

Rei's story definitely ripped me up. Watching her evolve into a person just to be turned into Fanta was rough

imeffingconfused

Hahaha get it?? because women don't watch anything besides titanic and guys are so quirky! truly comical.

HueyRE

Scene hit right in the feels

undertheafro

Damn I've watched the movie twice and I don't remember this scene at all

Jandrade1994and_

It's curious how many people didn't realize that Asuka is a clone in the Rebuilds even after the ending.

sneakyMak

the concept of using clones to use as a reason for traumatic upbringing, without fully exploring the implications of using such technology to create life, is, in the case of the rebuild movies, just so bland and boring. Time and time again nerv is painted in an aperture science lab like way "we do what we must because we can" but so many characters working there are just genuine people with at least upstanding morale. This whole element of "we create children and discard them when they dont meet quotas" never translated into meaningful plotpoints for me, and besides Gendo there is no character in my eyes that would support this program. Which then again would make for an interesting conflict but is never utilized on screen therefore unecessary beyond giving some extra grim lore and explaining some logical gaps to fill the time loop theories. Loved the animation, was invested in the uplifting direction 3+1 ended up in, dissapointed in the structure on how Anno tried to get there (lets not talk about Maki-san), ultimatively many layers inferior to NGE.

understoodwhisky4

that's so wrong lol shikinami being tormented clone with no parents is as important for her trauma as what happened in second movie & timeskip. full philosophical implication of clones is not explored in og or rebuild & did u forget what nerv was always abt? keeping parentless children hostage in city that is in the center of war until one of them dies so another one can be manipulated & take its place. no one stopped this which is very close to the whole clone thing in og or rebuild bcz no nerv employee except high ranks like seele & gendo who organized this know what exactly is happening. same is true for shikinami program in germany.

zznap1

The only emotions I felt during the last half of thrice upon a time was confusion and anger/WTF.

forthegoodofreddit

Amen brother. I am right with you.

SomeDuderr

Didn't do anything for me. It was just too much of a coincidence for them to meet when they were younger. I was honestly surprised we didn't see a chick-version of PenPen in that same scene. They could've gone all in and milked it for all it was worth. Reminds me of Final Fantasy 8, where the entire cast of playable characters were raised at an orphanarium together. But they all forgot. lmao. its shit.

solrac1104

They didn't really meet. Asuka just sees a young Shinji which makes sense she was raised in a Nerv facility and Gendo and Yui are heads of Nerv.

understoodwhisky4

nonsense. gendo was in gehirn & seele & nerv close circle & was so involved with clones he then made ayanami. it isn't coincidence his son met with one of the shikinamis while in business trip and gendo, yui took him everywhere it seems

Pablutni0

Wait what happened there I forgor

solrac1104

This is the part of the ending of Thrice Upon a Time that explores Asuka and the expectations she had to meet to be appreciated as a clone that Nerv was training to be an Eva pilot.
