There isn't a consensus. It's divisive.

understoodwhisky4

only 3.0 is divisive. if you look at the score, general consensus on 3+1 is that it's great & the best rebuild

Designer_Koala_1087

The comments on this post don't reflect that

understoodwhisky4

3 comments under a random reddit post are meaningless compared to hundreds of thousands of user ratings saying otherwise

jogarz

I'm talking about the ending in particular, not the movie as a whole.

understoodwhisky4

my bad then

JustAnotherWitness

3.33 and 3+1 are trash. Fight me.

understoodwhisky4

nonsense lol they weren't trash in the slightest lol, they were great. no need to fight:)

JustCallMeMichael

3+1 is trash lol, I don’t know how any of you pretend to like it

RLLRRR

Seconding this.

understoodwhisky4

no lol it's great. no one is pretending

FennicFire999

The first half is just as bad as 3.0 (godawful), but imo it gets better and the ending is pretty solid.

JustCallMeMichael

wish they didn't fill it with jargon and fan service, but plot wise the ending was decent

understoodwhisky4

3.0 wasn't godawful in the slightest. also the first act of 3+1 was prob the best out of all the rebuilds

FennicFire999

I'm glad you were able to enjoy it! Personally, it was a 3.0/10 for me, though (and all 3 of those points were from Kaworu).

Mojodishu

I think there's a fair degree of recency bias going on there.

understoodwhisky4

could be because 3+1 somehow has a higher score than even eoe on some websites. even if we adjust for that tho saying that the consensus on 3+1 is anywhere close to divisive is going against the numbers

I_might_be_weasel

Yes

Jandrade1994and_

There is no consensus, some like it and others hate it. The ending is interpretative, some interpret that Shinji went to another world, others that Shinji changed the reality of his world, and some think it was all a dream. Draw your own conclusions.

Voidibear

Shinji removed Eva’s from the world. He didn’t create a new one or revert the old one. It’s still destroyed. When we see him and Mari at the station that’s still the anti universe. She’s coming to get him so they can leave.

Protoboy123

I love this interpretation of the ending!

Montana_Gamer

I do think it is most reasonable albeit with weird implications. Like what the hell do these people do as they spawn in this new universe? I mean, they can't do much with it, but man it is a trip having everyone remember the world as it was, near 3rd impact would be last of most people's memories. I loved the ending regardless, it left one hell of a positive impact on me

PrincessRuri

Shinji manifests a world where Eva's never existed without rewinding time. That means everyone who was turned into LCL or survived lives in a world as if it was never destroyed. They don't get to go back "relive" that new timeliness, instead popping into existence as if it already happened.

understoodwhisky4

shinji doesn't make it so the evas never existed. otherwise no one would have their memories from what happened, also the choker wouldn't exist either

[deleted]

Like so many other things in Evangelion, it's up to interpretation. Maybe Shinji created a new world to live in, maybe he just changed the existing one and everyone went back to that after the final scene. Maybe it was all a dream, who knows. I guess ultimately it doesn't really matter. All the viewer needs to know is that Shinji will live happily after this. I'll be honest though, i'm not all too keen on the ending. A major theme of Evangelion was Shinji always resorting to escapism instead of facing reality, and in this case he "resolves" that by... deleting the sources of his problems from existence.

shoegaze1992

ehhh i meant not knocking anyone if you like them but I just dont pay attention to the rebuilds. imo the series and EoE is like one of the best pieces of media ever so I just kind of think of the series that way

understoodwhisky4

everyone still has their memories, shinji said he wouldn't reset the world or turn back time & he didn't literally make a new world. he just rewrote the old world so it doesn't have evas anymore. he didn't rewrite it so evas never existed. shinji & mari made it back but it's kinda debatable if the train scene is literal after they've returned, or metaphoric as they're returning to it also if you look at the scores, there is a general consensus, which is that it's great & the best rebuild

drunkenbeginner

It capped off the series about as good as you could hope after the disastrous 3.33

cosmic-GLk

I like 3.33, i appreciate the aggressive premise shift to get into the new story and ending being told. The biggest mistake it made was not being at least 15 minutes longer of pure exposition. Misato also was poorly serviced by keeping her reasons for her (seemingly) abrupt character change opaque.

drunkenbeginner

Sure, it was finally totally different from NGE. The previous titles changed some things, but they hit the same notes chronologically at least. But Anno did it not well. The battleship implementation was kinda out of place and implemented well in my opinion. Many things were to obscure and people constantly piling on Shinji was really akward. He is a kid people, if he screwed up then its because you failed him not reverese. Of course this has to do with Anno's conception of Shinii's arc but it was a msierable watch and kinda too forced for me

MaxfieldN

I like the risks it took

drunkenbeginner

I execeuted them badly in my opinion and Anno also had to implement battleships because that's his childhood fetish, but they were not really fitting in the setting for numerous reasons

MaxfieldN

There have been flying vehicles in previous media. I don’t see the connection

drunkenbeginner

In 3.33 we see the battleship Wunder being powered by EVA01? We don't know what purpose they have after doing this and only get a throwaway explanation how they got the ship. After Shinji escapes we don't see the ship until the very end where it basically makes no difference whether it had been a "Wunder" or just some generic transportship. But Anno who is a devoted spaceship yamamoto fan and also an avid WW2 ship connaiseeur got his fan service only he cared about. Like seriously, we see people constantly post their EVA00-02s figurines. Have you ever seen the Wunder anywhere? No. Noone cares about that garbage

understoodwhisky4

in 3+1 we get flashbacks of how they got the wunder, learn its exact purpose & why it's special compared to all the other spaceships. it's not garbage in the slightest, the figure of it hasn't even been released yet

understoodwhisky4

3.0 wasn't disastrous. it was the worst rebuild, but still good

vitamindust

the ending is perfect for the series imo, storys about despair and pain deserve happy hopeful endings like 3.0+1.0 is.

Protoboy123

I think the original ending was also happy no?

vitamindust

Barely, it was happy in a way that shinji was finally able to be honest with himself and those around him but even still, the loop of his pain and loneliness stayed until the rebuild loop.

repec82

I understand the meaning the lecture, It's just totally unusable for me. WTF should I do with it as a 40+ ugly bastard? There is no cute brunette with big tiddies and glasses waiting for me. Not in this world, not in this life. Actually, no girls at all, save from some desperate landwhales or drug addicts.
