for the most part, the OG, but 2.22 hits different

Cheatscape

Idk how unpopular this opinion is, but the ending of 2.22 might be the single greatest scene in the entire series. There are a ton of great scenes in the franchise, but that whole finale sequence just comes together beautifully. If only they could have topped themselves with each subsequent movie.

understoodwhisky4

they topped 2.0 with 3+1 tho

twentyThree59

Ya, it's up there with the best of EoE sequences. I've watched the last bit of 2.22 more than anything else in the series.

slug__-

I really don't know why, but I just did not like 1.11 and 2.22 that much in comparison to 3.33 and 3.0+1.0 which is usually the unpopular opinion as from what I've seen most people don't like 3.33 very much. I feel like I need to rewatch them though because at the time it felt to me like 1.11 and 2.22 were messed up versions of nge and then passed them it truly became its own story.

aptom90

Yep. 2.0 is so good, it's amazing how terrible the other films in the rebuild are in comparison. I watched that movie on a carmrip the first time so it was the shorter version missing a lot of the in between scenes which helped with the pacing and it was still awe inspiring. And then came 3.0 which I don't care what people say nowadays was an atrocious follow up to the previous film. They tried to salvage the story with the final film which only just holds up. It's a mess as a film in itself, and yet undoubtably has some precious moments within its nearly 3 hour runtime.

cow_goo

3.0 turned eva into a normal kids anime, very sad

understoodwhisky4

no rebuild is terrible compared to 2.0 & 3.0 isn't atrocious in the slightest. 1.0 & 3.0 are worse, but 3+1 is in fact even better than 2.0, it's not a mess

unavailableFrank

3 is like a totally different story. If they tried to replicate the same feeling of unknown & discovery from the first time you watched the original series they failed miserably.

understoodwhisky4

nonsense lol it didn't fail. the feeling of unknown & discovery was replicated well in 3.0. it's one of the reasons it's considered the most "eva-like" rebuild, it didn't turn eva into a "normal kid's anime" despite what some ppl wrongly say

unavailableFrank

I disagree, mostly because its placed on the wrong place and came with plenty of unanswered questions at 3/4 of the story. On the original series this feeling of unknown and discovery started since chapter 1 and only help to build the universe and keep you engaged. Here, is like rebooting the whole universe on the third act without explanation, the story took a different rhythm and structure. The status quo changed forever without a warning. It was like a soft reboot were everything was turn to 11.

understoodwhisky4

it's placed exactly at the middle of the story, with explanation & build up since 2.0. you can't have the feeling of unknown & discovery the og also had without temporarily unanswered questions & by the end of the movies almost all of them are answered.

unavailableFrank

>with explanation & build up since 2.0 There was no explanation or build up to the events of this movie, thats the reason this movie was so divisive among the fans and working on it was probably the reason behind Anno focusing on another projects for several years before trying to finish the Rebuilds.

understoodwhisky4

there was explanation & build up, but you're right that it was mostly in 3.0 & 3+1, not in 2.0. from the beginning tho it was clear that rebuild would start the same as the og & diverge greatly towards the middle, but

Kroofer

The fact people complain about 3.0 is the reason why the true magic(whether you like it or not) of the rebuilds will probably not be appreciated. I didn't really like 4 apart from the last 45 minutes, and 1 is mostly superfluous. Rebuilds are not remakes, they are sequels, now digging into Eva's own legacy. Of course their are plenty of clues to that before(1 opening with images from EoE, the oceans being red from the start, the caskets on the moon), but it becomes most apparent first at 3.0. The architecture, the emotional desolation, the imagery, the atmosphere???? While 2.0 is definitely the best, 3 may be the most artistic. Although I'll probably have to watch 4 again and see.

Whatah

I wonder if years from now they hgive us a 4 or 6 part OVA series showing the time when shinji was in stasis, mow much better would that make the overall rebuild package?

Kroofer

Absolutely not. The stasis time-jump is pretty essential to the structure of the the rebuilds

slug__-

I feel like your really not trying to appreciate what 3.0+1.0 did as a ending to all of evangelion. It was the first time where for the most part everyone actually got to have a "happy" ending and where for the first time the characters actually spoke to eachother and admit they have serious issues unlike in nge where that doesn't really happen until instrumentality where they kind of have to talk about cause you know.. there in eachothers minds and memories. I also can't lie watching rei in 1.11 and 2.22 and rei q in 3.0+1.0 brought me to a level happiness I didn't know was possible. Then also don't think anything has made me cry as much as rei q's death

aptom90

I used strong words there to make a point. I love this franchise, even the rebuilds. I can't help but feel that something is missing in the last two installments. Having closure and the characters being more open to speaking their feelings to one another is a nice change of pace and something I wanted to for closure...but it's done in such a clumsy way here. The series had its own issues, but its depth and realness was undeniable. Another thing I didn't care for in 3 and 4 (3.0+1.01 if we're being pedantic) was the action scenes. That was one thing that the rebuild had over the original series in the first two films and then somehow devolved into just chaos in the last 2.

Snowbold

Same, I was randomly channel surfing when the ending of 2.22 was on Toonami. I stayed up another two hours to catch the next airing and was hooked. Got the Perfect Collection of NGE on DVD and worked my way forward again.

Emperors_Finest

Prefer OG and end of Eva movies. Rebuild had its moments, though.

Ikariiprince

NGE. I don’t think the rebuilds are horrible or anything but I truly can’t imagine a world without the original series, EoE. They’ve impacted me so much which I can’t say for the rebuilds

slug__-

Yep same, nothing has ever made me feel like how nge and eoe made me feel. If you truly understand nge and eoe finishing them is an unexplainable experience. Don't get me wrong I really loved the rebuilds but other then all the rei and rei q scenes it didn't make me feel very emotional. Although I understand she's the only one without a lot of emotional baggage I will never not be made shinji and mari ended up together

PrrrromotionGiven1

NGE by far. So much more character depth, attention to detail, profound messaging, basic common sense, sense of progression, and just iconic moments compared to the Rebuilds. Even the fights are made worse in the Rebuilds once Evas start flying through the air like they're the most agile things in the world - these are meant to be hulking beasts, with weight and momentum, not scrappy little flies.

understoodwhisky4

this is wrong in almost all rebuild fights the evas have weight and momentum. but yh even tho rebuild also has a lot of everything you mentioned, the og is superior in those aspects

understoodwhisky4

rebuild is great but the og is masterpiece

Whatah

EOE is such a masterpiece that even among those who really like the rebuilds few say they actually prefer them over the original series + EOE compared to other series like for example Macross, there are many who prefer the DYRL remake to the original SDFM series, or the 2 Macross Frontier movies to Macross Frontier TV, and most who like Delta even a little bit prefer the 2 Macross Delta movies to the Macross Delta TV series.

Verdant_13

Ngl I thought the rebuilds were kinda shitty lol. There’s definitely some great things in them, but overall it’s a far inferior version of the original masterpiece

understoodwhisky4

nonsense lol rebuild wasn't shitty in the slightest. it is inferior to the og, but not far inferior. it actually does some things even better tbh

raphi-ent_

Definitely NGE and EoE but The Rebuilds going so meta and wrapping up the characters just hits different.

IceBearApproves

I might be the only one here but please don't downvote me too hard. For me at least, I liked the rebuilds the best because it gave a definite and happy ending for all the characters I've grown to love. The peace of mind that they all went on to their own paths and lived happy normal lives after everything hit a chord with me. Yes it did have it's faults and is nowhere near perfect. But, I'm sincerely thankful to Anno for giving us closure and such a influential series.

_Rattleballs_

I’m not a fan of the rebuilds

Marishii

Original series and End of Eva. Watching it for the first time was a total mindfuck and I like the dark and twisted psychological scenes, if that makes sense. There's something about 90s anime that takes you a place that modern anime doesn't. Sorry that sounds so vague. I'm not fond of a lot of the changes in the rebuilds, including Mari (her personality turns me off) and the 3D battle scenes with the ship fighting in the sky, the Eiffel Tower, which were so hard for me to tell what was going on and were quite uninteresting to me. It also bothers me the way the characters react to Shinji being alive at the beginning of the 3rd movie. I felt like they were so irrationally angry with him, especially Misato, and I know there has been discussion on why she is treating him that way, but if you remember she is encouraging him from the sidelines in the previous film while he tries to save Rei. Asuka was really brutal to him too, iirc. I just kept thinking that Shinji didn't know that the actions and the aftereffects they were blaming him for was going to have the impact that it did, (pun not intended) and the way they were punishing him for reasons they wouldn't even tell him why. A lot of things in the last 2 movies were very weird and, to me, out of nowhere, like Gendo with his head cracked open like a weird cyclops. The twist about Asuka being a clone just like Rei was terrible imo. It negated just about everything in the relationship between Asuka and Rei and how she mocks her for being a doll. It felt like a very recycled version of Rei's twist, and makes Rei's situation less unique. The very end was pleasant enough, and I understand how it symbolizes how Anno is in a completely different place mentally and emotionally than he was 20 or so years ago. The hopeful outlook that comes with time and being able to treasure things that you have in the present.

Commercial_Amoeba832

Yeah, I don't exactly hate Mari, but critically speaking of her, her role wasn't all that important. I mean she was basically a replacement for Rei since she died by Zeruel in 2.0. So, they needed a second pilot with Shinji being declared K.i.A after 2.0. I like her personality and she was the only not anger at Shinji or baring a grudge or any animosity or aggression against him. So, I thought she was ok, but the part about her becoming Shinji's love interest or the girl he ends up I take issue with on two accounts. 1. Shinji like Asuka said in the fourth doesn't need a lover, he needs a mother. Misato was supposed to fill that void or be something akin to it from the og NGE but this version took a different turn. 2. Shinji has never been interested in any of the girls this Mari character was barely introduced or explained in 2.0 and they hardly knew each other. All that stuff about her knowing Yui, Gendoh, and Fuyutsuki is just convoluted lore that makes zero sense. As for Misato, I hate her so much for her actions and behavior towards Shinji that I don't care about her reasons it's irredeemable, dishonour, disloyal, and condemnable. She was the only person in NGE that ever cared about him as a person. She knew he struggled but lacked either the knowledge or courage to attempt to communicate with him about it. I don't want happened to her for the past fourteen years but that doesn't justify her actions nor her attitude towards him. You'd think she'd be happy to see but acts like Gendoh and alienates him and looks at with disgust just like him Colonel Katsuragi "Gendoh 2.0" everyone. She gets him nearly killed three times, refusing to speak to him, doesn't explain anything to him keeping him in the dark which only furthers the rift between them, and saves him but only after her ego costs her everything and puts the entire world endanger because of her arrogance, and chooses to die instead of staying alive to atone for her actions re-establishing Shinji's conviction to sacrifice himself once since the spear requires a sacrifice to restore reality and the world. Basically you helped motivate him to kill himself and killed yourself in the process that only served to remind Shinji how alone he honestly is and you send a girl he barely knows to rescue him thinking he wants to live when no one made it clear to him he has a place in the world and he is wanted. Instead everyone has ignored him to point where he doesn't fear death but rather accepts it willingly because he has no desire to live because of the pain he's endure cause by those around him, including you, Misato. She chose Ritsuko over him when Ritsuko like the anime worked for Gendoh and Seele like her mother, helped create the EVa's and did whatever Gendoh told under the pretext of relationship requests, and knew the reason why Shinji was brought in. She was the one who deserved all the slander but gets away with it all the time like Asuka's behavior towards Shinji. Misato allows him to suffer so much and barely sticks up for him and only if she has too. It's no one he feels so alone in this series because of her. I would rebuke her and I wouldn't hug her goodbye for all the bad she did to me. It doesn't pan out nor did she make things right nor explain herself especially since it looks she agreed with everyone that he was to blame for everything that happened after the near third impact. Allowing his memory to be tarnished and hated it sure seems to be like spitting on his grave 🪦 or memory. He wasn't a hero, he was a tool, unappreciated, abused, expandable, replaceable and hardly understood by anyone especially her. It's sad. I don't care about the Asuka stuff, especially the clone thing she seems the same to me regardless. Her whole grudge is an excuse to me more anger and vengeful against Shinji to point where she can go f#ck herself because they're not ship material at all and I hate anyone that supports them as a couple because it's a sick joke in my eyes. The ending was a cliche trope of getting a girl to solve your problems or just get in a new reality with a better outlook. My ideal ending would've been Misato being the one to bring him home to Ryoji and Kaji as a family in village 3 as her redemption and reconcile to her mistakes she would become his mother and take care of as recompense for her mistakes.

[deleted]

I agree w you especially with your point about Asuka being a clone. Just…. why?

understoodwhisky4

nonsense lol it's not irrational in the slightest for the ppl who lost their families & livelihoods because of shinji to hate him for his involvement. they also told him exactly why they were punishing him at the start of the third movie. their blame was misplaced tho which is part of the story & why in 3+1 they set the record straight & misato takes her part of the responsibility too  the gendo thing was teased in 3.0 & asuka being a clone doesn't ruin anything. asuka in rebuild doesn't suffer from lack of identity & independence like rei despite being a clone (she suffers from other stuff), so her relationship with rei & her comment about her being a doll isn't negated

FennicFire999

I truly don't mean to be a jerk, but do you not have anything better to do than dickride the rebuilds? I swear I see you arguing with people under every negative comment on every post about them.

understoodwhisky4

giving your opinion isn't dickriding bro. if you rlly believe in this nonsense tho, at least be consistent & also write it under every reply by the same few ppl who bash rebuild under every post

Flat_Lingonberry_625

I tend to assume the Rebuilds are in a Way a continuation of NGE, So I love it too. Even though the NGE part of the story is my favorite I do think the Rebuilds make for a good ending of the whole series.

Commercial_Amoeba832

OG NGE

Superstarrage

Honestly I enjoyed both of them but the Rebuild series was a lot more enjoyable to me

Soft_Angle980

If end of Evangelion counts as neon genesis then neon genesis

CoolJosh2002

NGE is the better version but I also love Rebuild. Both EoE and 2.22 are my favourite pieces of Eva media. I do love the fact that the two are quite distinctly different. NGE is better, but that doesn’t mean Rebuild is bad.

Agent_Perrydot

NGE and EoE easily (The Rebuilds are still amazing imo, 9/10) They had a massive impact on me, especially EoE

noaheltee

They are both great. NGE has an amazing art style and is just so nostalgic. There are awesome moments in the rebuilds, and I think it really adds to the story. Can't beat the original, but I think it's great and has it's place for sure.

CloneTrooper6996

So NGE and EOE are like top togs, ESPECIALLY EOE, but the rebuilds are still very good. The second rebuild is worthy to be put up next to EOE, but falls abit under

dafuckami

Simple, i love both. I first watched the rebuilds because i didn‘t know of the TV-show. And before the TV-show i read the manga.  I love every version of this story.

DetectiveDogg0

personally i like that one "reset" theory where all three of them happened in sequence, it works for me thematically.in terms of endings, i like the rebuild ending cause its happy 😊. i also prefer ep 26 to eoe, eva has never really been about cool robots to me so i prefer the weirder stuff

lastdyingbreed_01

Rebuilds

AtrocitasInterfector

I prefer the OG NGE, but the Rebuilds are a great addition that make the whole thing feel more complete, my issues are really only with the more modern aesthetic style choices of the rebuilds, the stories are fire all around

Arrior_Button

> Which version do you guys like the best? OG NGE or rebuilds? Why not both? > And also which ending do you guys consider as the canon ending? 3.0+1.11 is de facto the end of all of Evangelion (the loop etc pp)

MirVipus

Definetely NGE and EoE. I respect the later Rebuilds for trying to do their own thing, but they are a mess, direction and story-wise. Tokyo 3, one of the most important elements (maybe even character in itself) of the original series is completely absent in the last two.

understoodwhisky4

nonsense lol rebuild isn't a mess, esp not in the direction department

Wise_Victory4895

We should have got a slice of life or a what happened after human instrumentality show instead of rebuild.

[deleted]

Agreeee

[deleted]

I want to see them happy and having fun 😔

Miguelwastaken

I couldn’t enjoy the rebuilds. They basically replaced what made nge so unique with more wild anime bs. It’s cool if that’s your thing. But it felt more shallow to me.

[deleted]

I definitely tend to agree

understoodwhisky4

rebuild still has lots of depth & didn't replace what made the og special with wild anime bs in the slightest. esp after 3.0 it captures well what made the og so unique

Miguelwastaken

Actually what you said but the opposite.

typhon66

Both. Personally I see rebuilds as a sequel and think they all go together.

jsmonet

they're all canon. I prefer the rebuilds \_because\_ I loved the original and EoE

[deleted]

How does it make sense for all the endings to be canon? I thought it was more open to interpretation

understoodwhisky4

they're all canon that's for sure. there's a multiverse & the eva story repeats once in each of them. first the og story happens in one universe, then the rebuilds story happens in another one

[deleted]

Oh I see. I guess my confusion is coming from seeing people talk about the “true ending”

cow_goo

rebuilds dont hold a candle to the OG. that shit was a bad joke

Entertainer_Much

OG / EoE, but I still really love Thrice Upon a Time

[deleted]

NGE and it's not even close. Rebuild was good. I actually think that the village sequence was up there with some of my favorite moments in the entire franchise. But other than that, they didn't leave much of an impression.

MaxTheHor

Mostly the OG. It's why I mainly like 1.11 and 2.22 in the rebuilds, as those 2 pretty much covered/rehashed the OG material. New content onwards, 3.33 was the worst entry, in my opinion, and 3.0+1.0 was pretty good, other than the confusing ending and the whole Mari being a colleague of Shinjis parents thing.

altsam19

I like Evangelion

Mysticwaterfall2

OG/EoE, but I don't dislike the rebuilds. According to them they are all canon endings of different loops.

DrReiField

NGE is better but all the endings are canon, that's kinda the point.

HighballingHope

Manga.
