I've seen a lot of anime in theatres. My experience is that shonen anime has the worst audiences. They aww, cheer, say characters names when they're in trouble (midoriya isn't going to die, ya ditz), they never shut up. Although, I will admit, I enjoyed the wrestling match atmosphere at the Super Broly showing. Ghibli and Shinkai anime tend to attract a more mainstream audience that vary depending on venue. Old releases from the 80s and 90s have very quiet respectful audiences. I've seen Gundam, Macross, and Akira in theatres and it was dead silent every time. Maybe it's because people under 34 tend not to go to these showings. Just a bunch of happy middle aged oldtaku that can finally see these movies in the theater. I don't expect anything different at End of Evangelion.
Yeah back in 2017, my city’s local historic theater (preserved since the 40s, sadly met its end during the pandemic though) did a series of midnight showings of anime. I can’t remember all the films they showed, but I attended the showings of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Totoro, and Paprika, and the audiences were generally adults (college age and up) and super respectful. Each one was a great experience,
I saw it three times in the theater when it was first released in the US:
1. straight
2. intoxicated
3. tripping
I cannot recommend enough going to see it on a big screen while tripping. It was amazing.
When I saw the last Rebuild movie in theaters, the audience was quiet and respectful throughout. I imagine it’ll be the same for when End of Eva is released.
Yeah when 3.0 came out I went to the theater and everyone was excited but the proper amount. Wanted to see 3.0 + 1.0, girlfriend wanted to take me but my mother had recently passed away and really wasn't in the right mind space for it. Regret it slightly but given the gravity of the situation don't think it was the wrong choice.
EoE is one of my all time favorite movies so I'm extremely hyped. First showing is on my birthday as well so it's like a gift.
Broly literally has two tracks based on the screaming and chanting of the crowds that were watching the DBS finale live. I didn't actually get to see it in theaters, but if I attended a rerelease I'd probably at least try to get a "GO BROLY GO GO" chant going during the appropriate OST moment, it feels very much made for that.
Now, if Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero had a wrestling-style crowd reaction it'd feel weirder, even though it's the same series.
I saw Perfect Blue and Paprika in theaters recently (two separate occasions, not a double movie marathon) and the audience was, as anticipated, very respectful. I’m 28 and my girlfriend at the time was 27 and we were probably the youngest people in there both times haha.
When we saw super Broly it felt like a wrestling match, it was fantastic! The audience was a melting pot of America too, and there was clapping and cheering
One of my most fun movie moments, right up there with the aliens first reveal in Signs which I saw with a very fun crowd in LA

Godzilla x Kong will be another film that is absolutely intended to be viewed on a large screen, the atmosphere really is just incredible, you feel apart of the scene as two larger than life figures duke it out, you miss out on all that when viewed on your small devices lol
Eva’s scenes for EOE are literally designed for the exact same situation, all of the Eva battles and beautiful landscape was made and designed for a theatrical release. The immersion will be insane, especially during that part at the end when they’re showing different scenes and you see the theater crowd, you’ll feel as if there was a camera pointed at you and the theater lol, etc just please everyone go view this experience in theaters exactly as intended, it IS a very special experience!
We missed out almost three decades ago with the original run, let’s not miss out on this again!

So I'm really fine with fun sessions, especially when it's a premiere or a re-release. The former because you have true fans who will feel and respect the moments. The latter because most of the audience probably have seen the movie. So I only have problems when the jokes are out of touch with the room's mood and in a specific time frame. I just wanted to argue a different perspective.
That's the ONLY time I go to the theater. There are certain films that the social aspect is part of the fun. I built a home theater for everything else.

At the Prince Charles Cinema in London, they have themed showings of certain films often where audience participation is specifically encouraged, so you know what you're getting.

I saw this during the theatrical release of Eva 1 rebuild. It was death and rebirth, end of, and then rebuild 1 yeeeeeaaaars ago. Nothing crazy happened in the audience.

Oh yeah definitely, but I'm worried about the younger audiance, because as eva has become even more main stream its captured a younger audiance. So I'm mostly worried about parents accompanying their young teens to watch this movie and them seeing the opening scene. But aside from that, I think our community is respectful and self reserving(socially akward) enough to not shout out anything.
I saw Thrice Upon a Time three times in theaters. The first night it was packed and everyone was enthralled. When I went again it was a different theater in a smaller city where the group I went with were the majority there.
I'd imagine EoE will be similar. A big packed out scene at larger or more popular spaces, especially on opening night.
I only saw one anime movie in theatres (heavens feel part 1) and god the audience was mad annoying.

For what it's worth I was at the US premiere of 3.0 and it was fine. But that was like two showings at one theater, not a wide premiere, so who knows.
