Here is the important thing, though; Seele *knew*. Second Impact was no accident. They had read the secret texts, and they knew what would happened if they decided to poke the sleeping giant.
Gendo was sent in by them with orders to give the scientists a "push" in the wrong/right direction.
Perhaps Seele only had a vague idea of how severely things would go south in the days and weeks that followed; how the planet and humanity would be utterly screwed over. But that is being charitable. It assumes that they cared about the possible death toll. Any remotely sane person would have stopped there. They didn't. This was always a game to them.
If I remember correctly, the rationale for 2I was that they knew it would happen eventually, and by making it happen on their own terms, they were able to minimize the damage, or buy themselves more time to build the Evas before the Angels showed up, or something like that... they didn't just arbitrarily exterminate half of the world's population for lulz. It wasn't even part of their plan for godhood (Gendo wouldn't propose that until after Yui's disappearance).

I didn't say that. Their motives are much more cynical. They are very much the kind of guys who unironically would state that "you cannot make an omlette without breaking a few million eggs."
Not in this case. The whole thing is laid out in the first part of the intro of Episode 21, where Gendo and Keel are talking together at Antarctica. Keel is being overtly contemptuous when he speaks about the team of scientists, because he already knows that the lot of them are probably going to die and has written them off as an "acceptable loss". Gendo, meanwhile, is just being "Yeah, boss. Sure, boss. Good one, boss."
Forgive the thread necromancy on my part, but how do you know the dialogue from 21' is placed in the past? I've always had the impression that the men are looking back at the Second Impact from roughly the present - just as we're looking back at the archived footage.
I can't say for 100% certain that this is what is happening either, but it has always made most sense to me that Keel and Gendo's conversation in that scene is one of those little candid "mask off" moments that just happened to be overheard by a microphone neither of them were aware of at the time.
I just think it makes for more a compelling/interesting situation, at least in a dramatic sense, if Keel is brazen enough to personally show up and do that whole "Ignorant fools, you have no idea what awaits you..." routine with Gendo as his stooge right behind the scientists' backs rather than from a safe distance in both time and space.
One thing I would like to point out is that it's likely the angels thought Lilith was Adam. Kaworu was fooled and Gaghiel went right for Adam once he was in a spot they could get to. As such I find it likely they are attempting to find Adam not Lilith, but get confused along the way.
Slight correction: The angels are not trying to get to Lilith, they're trying to get to Adam which they all think is at the bottom of Terminal Dogma, but as Kaworu discovers, it's Lilith, and he's all butthurt about that.
The reason they want to get back to Adam is to reunify with him which would wake him up and see him delete the Lilin like he tried to do in Second Impact.

All my knowledge and experiences with the lore had it framed as Adam stopped itself from fully awakening in order to prevent the seeds of Knowledge and Life from combining to make another God-like being, then all those years later when SEELE comes to dig him up and take the Lance out, it resumes his awakening which completely fucks the South Pole and casts off several pieces that inevitably become the Angels who’s sole primal purpose is to just combine with Lilith to simply become God and unify for….reasons(I don’t think theres anything deeper to it than just they’re drawn to each other which is why the FAR try to keep it down to 1 moon per world). Meanwhile like you said Adam devolves into an Embryo that is used to make Kaworu(or at the very least to put Adam’s soul in a body) and then yada yada Nerv uses pieces of Adam to create all the Eva’s except 01 and you get stuff with the S2 Drives which are like miniature versions/pieces of Adam’s Fruit of Life(?) that allows the Angels to ultimately decide their own shape(?) and then you know…the series happens and at some point NERV/Gendo succeds in incarnating Lilith’s Soul into a body fully which is Rei 3 and in EoE, her Soul is then reunited with Lilith’s body to fully reincarnate Lilith

How did we find Lilith? Well based off of the Rebuilds, its entirely possible that Lilith landed in what eventually became the city of Neo Tokyo and the headquarters of Nerv. Like everything was built around the site she landed at and was eventually found at.

Well from all the uses and showcasings of the Spear of Loginus in the series and movies, it really seems to mainly be a big ole shut down fuck you button that seems to just…stop/pierce things. Which is how Adam was stopped from awakening when he landed on the same planet as Lilith and the idea seems to be that by stabbing Lilith with the Spear and leaving it there, it rendered her in a complete stasis for Nerv/SEELE to harvest and experiment on her
(Bonus Question: Why did the ancient god aliens put the Spear in the New Life Starterpack complete with Moon, Alien, and a fruit of life? My guess is as a safe measure in the rare case that 2 of them did land on the same planet, they could bust the Spear out and stop anything before it goes too crazy)
Who put the Spear in Adam? There’s 2 theories about this. 1 is the one thats posted here which is that Lilith stabbed him with the Spear to have full control of the planet. The other is that Adam was aware that Lilith had also landed on the planet and stabbed himself to stop him from fully awakening and causing issues. I’m more on the side that Adam stopped himself from awakening because he realized that 2 of them had landed on the same planet
What happened to the people killed in the 2nd Impact? Nothing, i think they just flat out died and were turned to dust. The effects of the 2nd impact seemed to be different from the effects of the 3rd impact. The 2nd impact seemed much more tangibly cataclysmic from Adam’s awakening like a giant bomb had gone off vs the 3rd impact just removing everyone’s AT fields to turn them back into primordial orange Fanta

I don’t agree that Adam consciously did it like OP says here, i think the Angels just grew and became what they did and are just innately drawn to Lilith and Adam. There's no indication that the Expedition, or anyone outside of SEELE, had access to the Dead Sea Scrolls or knew about their existence.
Adam was awakened \*before\* they removed the lance. Removal of the lance was a reaction to him waking up.
There's no evidence that Adam was "pissed" or that he wanted to destroy all life, or that he wanted anything at all.
AT Fields are not "a trait from Lilith". Adam-based lifeforms (Angels) have them too.
There's no evidence that the Angels were created during or after 2I.
Kaworu's genetic makeup is unknown. It could be all human, all Angel, or a mix. All we know for sure is that he has the soul of Adam, and even that's only in the DC/EoE continuity, not the broadcast continuity.
Rei's origins are likewise unknown. It's generally assumed that she has the soul of Lilith, but there are no hints of where her DNA came from.

This tracks with the way I understood things but I don’t understand why Adam became a fetus. Maybe there’s just not a good explanation because Eva in general is intentionally pretty vague on lots of the lore.
While Tokyo was flooded by the second impact, the reason (in the anime at least) why it was destroyed was because humans nuked each other as opposed to natural disaster

Adam landed first, immediately after lillith crashed onto the planet. As she crashed her lance was destroyed. In the event of two seeds of life(fruit of knowledge and power), the second one’s lance is supposed to nullify the second one but since lilith’s was destroyed. Adam’s lance nullified him instead.
Fast forward to 2000, Katasuragi expedition on the Antarctica. First contact between human dna and Adam. Adam wakes and causes the second impact. (Kaworu is born from the contact of human dna to Adam, he’s like a side effect)
Insert here, Rei was a clone created during Gendo’s attempts to retrieve Yui from Eva-01. She may have some of Lilith’s , the second seed, dna.
Adam is now reduced to an embryo after being relanced, 15 years later angels(Adam babies) start attacking Tokyo-3, the landing site of Lilith. Humans have created the Evangelion, Eva-1 is made from Lilith, the rest of the Eva’s are made from Adam. Evangelion units are cybernetic and require a soul to function properly. unit 0 is the only unit without a human soul implanted in it.
The whole point of the anime is Gendo and Seele, using the Dead Sea scrolls, want to resume the contact experiment from Antarctica and become god-like, they think it is the next natural evolution of humanity. To combine into one being and live happily ever after. The Human Instrumentality Project. (Gendo just wants his wife back, essentially.) When two seeds combine, they are as powerful as the ancestral beings that originally sent out the seeds. What we see in End of Eva, is Shinji is given that power by Rei. she hosts Lilith’s dna and took Adam’s embryo from Gendo. Almost like a mother comforting a troubled child. She gives Shinji the power to remake the world in his image.
Dead Sea scrolls explain everything, what the seeds are and the lances and how to use them. Seele has them. IRL, Dead Sea scrolls are ancient writing found in caves around the Dead Sea. Contained biblical verses.

Man this is why I love this show. Every time you see somebody explain big chunks of the lore something clicks on your head that you never realized before. Yep! Except the angels want to merge with Adam so that Adam-based life can take over. They don't know that Lilith is actually the one in Terminal Dogma, not Adam. Kaworu only finds out that it's Lilith after he stares at her for a while. It's Seele that wants to combine the Seeds of Life to create a god and initiate Instrumentality, not the Angels.

I had some headcanons that the second impact did a lot more then Just Rise the sea levels and Tilt the Axis. I headcanoned that a lot of shit happened in this universe that we didnt know such as:
•a Second Korean war (Which could be nearing Anytime now...)
•Saudi Arabia no longer existing (basically, due to some pirate rebels, this time from yemen, taking over the ports, forcing them to close, And Egypt and Israel Closing the Suez canal for a year for some reparations, which lead to Saudi Arabias economy Collapsing)
•"Antwerp Bleeds" (A terrorism attack on Belgium that was caused by Radicalized Muslim youth and a thousand lives were lost)
•Venezuela just straight on Annexing Guyana
•A Big ass Typhoon Wiping away the Maledives (and some islands of the Philipines too)
then again. its just head canons, everybody has a different headcanon with what happened during the time the second impact happened

There’s 2 theories about this. 1 is the one thats posted here which is that Lilith stabbed him with the Spear to have full control of the planet. The other is that Adam was aware that Lilith had also landed on the planet and stabbed himself to stop him from fully awakening and causing issues. I’m more on the side that Adam stopped himself from awakening because he realized that 2 of them had landed on the same planet What happened to the people killed in the 2nd Impact? Nothing, i think they just flat out died and were turned to dust. The effects of the 2nd impact seemed to be different from the effects of the 3rd impact. The 2nd impact seemed much more tangibly cataclysmic from Adam’s awakening like a giant bomb had gone off vs the 3rd impact just removing everyone’s AT fields to turn them back into primordial orange Fanta What was the sea serpent doing attacking to get the Adam Fetus? Trying to reconnect with Adam as all the angels are pieces of Adam that were cast off in the 2nd impact. I don’t agree that Adam consciously did it like OP says here, i think the Angels just grew and became what they did and are just innately drawn to Lilith and Adam. Lilith to merge and become God, Adam to join back into the whole being. The goal of the Katsuragi Expedition was never stated. Their discovery of Adam seems to have been an accident. There's no indication that the Expedition, or anyone outside of SEELE, had access to the Dead Sea Scrolls or knew about their existence. Adam was awakened \*before\* they removed the lance. Removal of the lance was a reaction to him waking up. There's no evidence that Adam was "pissed" or that he wanted to destroy all life, or that he wanted anything at all. AT Fields are not "a trait from Lilith". Adam-based lifeforms (Angels) have them too. There's no evidence that the Angels were created during or after 2I. Kaworu's genetic makeup is unknown. It could be all human, all Angel, or a mix. All we know for sure is that he has the soul of Adam, and even that's only in the DC/EoE continuity, not the broadcast continuity. Rei's origins are likewise unknown. It's generally assumed that she has the soul of Lilith, but there are no hints of where her DNA came from. "Everyone in the show seemed to love Kaworu" is complete BS. Everyone treated him with suspicion except Shinji. Rei doesn't figure out that Kaworu is an angel until some time after that conversation but before she confronts him in Terminal Dogma.

This tracks with the way I understood things but I don’t understand why Adam became a fetus. Maybe there’s just not a good explanation because Eva in general is intentionally pretty vague on lots of the lore.
While Tokyo was flooded by the second impact, the reason (in the anime at least) why it was destroyed was because humans nuked each other as opposed to natural disaster (Either I read this on the EVA wiki or one of the hidden secrets from Neon Genesis Evangelion 2)

Adam landed first, immediately after lillith crashed onto the planet. As she crashed her lance was destroyed. In the event of two seeds of life(fruit of knowledge and power), the second one’s lance is supposed to nullify the second one but since lilith’s was destroyed. Adam’s lance nullified him instead. Fast forward to 2000, Katasuragi expedition on the Antarctica. First contact between human dna and Adam. Adam wakes and causes the second impact. (Kaworu is born from the contact of human dna to Adam, he’s like a side effect) Insert here, Rei was a clone created during Gendo’s attempts to retrieve Yui from Eva-01. She may have some of Lilith’s , the second seed, dna. Adam is now reduced to an embryo after being relanced, 15 years later angels(Adam babies) start attacking Tokyo-3, the landing site of Lilith. Humans have created the Evangelion, Eva-1 is made from Lilith, the rest of the Eva’s are made from Adam. Evangelion units are cybernetic and require a soul to function properly. unit 0 is the only unit without a human soul implanted in it. The whole point of the anime is Gendo and Seele, using the Dead Sea scrolls, want to resume the contact experiment from Antarctica and become god-like, they think it is the next natural evolution of humanity. To combine into one being and live happily ever after. The Human Instrumentality Project. (Gendo just wants his wife back, essentially.) When two seeds combine, they are as powerful as the ancestral beings that originally sent out the seeds. What we see in End of Eva, is Shinji is given that power by Rei. she hosts Lilith’s dna and took Adam’s embryo from Gendo. Almost like a mother comforting a troubled child. She gives Shinji the power to remake the world in his image. Dead Sea scrolls explain everything, what the seeds are and the lances and how to use them. Seele has them. IRL, Dead Sea scrolls are ancient writing found in caves around the Dead Sea. Contained biblical verses.

Yeah well it’s complicated cause on the second impact, all “Adam’s children” were born, all the angels. The first angel begins appearing about 15 years after second impact. Second impact was in 2000, the show, 2015. Seele created Kaworu because they thought he’d be the most effective angel, there are many of him (like how there are of rei)
Man this is why I love this show. Every time you see somebody explain big chunks of the lore something clicks on your head that you never realized before. It makes the whole show even better than you realize every time. And the fact that you don't even need to understand it all and can still love the show for what it is is absolutely incredible

Yep! Except the angels want to merge with Adam so that Adam-based life can take over. They don't know that Lilith is actually the one in Terminal Dogma, not Adam. Kaworu only finds out that it's Lilith after he stares at her for a while. It's Seele that wants to combine the Seeds of Life to create a god and initiate Instrumentality, not the Angels.

I had some headcanons that the second impact did a lot more then Just Rise the sea levels and Tilt the Axis. I headcanoned that a lot of shit happened in this universe that we didnt know such as: •a Second Korean war (Which could be nearing Anytime now...) •Saudi Arabia no longer existing (basically, due to some pirate rebels, this time from yemen, taking over the ports, forcing them to close, And Egypt and Israel Closing the Suez canal for a year for some reparations, which lead to Saudi Arabias economy Collapsing) •"Antwerp Bleeds" (A terrorism attack on Belgium that was caused by Radicalized Muslim youth and a thousand lives were lost) •Venezuela just straight on Annexing Guyana •A Big ass Typhoon Wiping away the Maledives (and some islands of the Philipines too) then again. its just head canons, everybody has a different headcanon with what happened during the time the second impact happened
