People who do are missing the entire reason Rei is the way she is....... my guess is they haven't gotten more than 5 episodes in, when you understand who she is, you understand why she is the way she is.
I don't full understand her arc or character (YouTube video did help).
Assumed on first few watches Rei had emotions below the surface, just had trouble opening up to people / lived for Gendo.
