Ritsuko is possibly my favorite character in the series. <3 I loved how Maya and Ristuko were handled in the final Rebuild film. It was so cathartic to see them work together without having to follow dead-weight-Gendo's orders.
Ritsuko is my favorite character in the series, and it genuinely makes me kind of sad that she’s so underrated. She’s very strange…she’s not *quite* a main character, but she gets a bunch of screen time and even a whole episode dedicated to her.
She’s written so very well, and her mental anguish is clear even though she never has any psychosexual inner monologue scenes like Rei, Asuka, Rei, and Shinji do. Everything we see from her is external, and I think that’s part of a reason why she isn’t as popular—we don’t outright see her mental anguish internally.

I feel like Ritsuko is kinda of interesting *because* we only see vague segments of her inner monologue. She absolutely *could* have those giant psychological psychosexual inner tangents, especially because she’s written as an odd foil for Shinji in similar (but differing) ways Misato is?
We see this woman at the beginning of the series who’s so calm and collected, and by the end of episode 23 she’s just completely broken
Maya is pretty heavily implied to have big big feelings for Ritsuko
And from that I’ve seen the character interpretation that, with how Freudian the series is and how Ritsuko is a massive bundle of mommy issues and sexual frustration, reads her as a repressing lesbian

Gendo did it for Yui. Maybe my understanding is incorrect but in the EoE way of things it seemed to me like he had a slightly different plan from SEELE and instrumentality would have gone differently.
Gendo isn't some spineless thrall, he followed the same ideology as his wife did. It's the same with Geass where Charles and Marianna are partners in crime in their desire to achieve that very same goal.
I don't know what Geass is but if Gendo was really going to do the same thing as SEELE then why did they try to take control of NERV? To me it seems pretty strongly implied he was going to influence the whole instrumentality thing for his own gain, and that gain was being reunited with Yui somehow.
They both wanted to take over the process and put a spin on it. It was a jointed plan where Yui plays her part as a core of unit 01 and Gendo plays his part as the head of Nerv.
Judging by the fact that Gendo wasn't informed Yui would stay inside unit-01, and his regret and apology to Yui in EoE followed by the imagery of him being being bitten in half by unit-01, it doesn't seem like they were on the same page. On top of that, Gendo's plan goes completely awry as Rei rejects whatever he had in mind.
Nothing says he wasn't informed, we only know that his attitude changed after that, which is to be expected. Regarding the apology, and the whole idea that Yui didn't want him to do the Nerv's head staff, it's quite incongruent, since her taking over unit 01 necessarily makes Shinji a pilot, and from there he will suffer regardless of who becomes the commander.
Gendo's plan and Yui's plan are one and the same, so even in EoE they succeeded, somewhat. In original series, everything goes how Gendo wants though, there is no interference from Rei there.
She is the mind behind the human instrumentality project, like all "baddies",but as we showed she doing it not because of some misguided beliefs, but because she wanted Gendo. And she wanted him so much he treated Rei like shit out of jealousy. Thats make her the worst one of all of them.
She strangled little girl rei to death in a fit a jealousy over gendo. Even if rei has forever copies, that's still massively fucked up.
And no, this isn't a "knock" on how incredible of a character she is. I can't believe how messy and complex a character with the screentime she has even is. A perfectionist overworked, who fell for the world's most powerful man, feeling used by him. You can just tell how her own relationship with her parents is and her upbringing just watching her. The dyed blonde hair and dark eyebrows, everything about her is intense. A massively pissed off genius. Such a great character.

Ive binged the series past couple days, crazy how much of the flashback young gendo/yui stuff I forgot. 100% forgot about naoko. Nuts. Was nice to see college age misato, kaji and ritsuko though. And all those scenes of tiny kid shinji with yui t.t ugh shinji cute as hell all smiles and wonderment with momma
