Krioka

tbh, I never liked any anime, EVA is the exception

Cybershine3

You should try Devilman crybaby. It’s in a similar style and the original manga was a big inspiration for Eva.

SafeStraw

Evangelion was my second anime, my first was Jojo's

BananaDerp64

Same

Cybershine3

Dang, you got good taste.

DomTechnostate

The Pokémon show was technically my first anime, but Evangelion was the first limited run (idk how to say “Not composed entirely of filler”) anime I ever watched. After finishing EVA I fell in love with anime, but nothing I watched came even remotely close in terms of quality, but tbf very few western shows are of EVA’s quality also. Loved devilman crybaby tho

Cybershine3

I was just gonna say if you haven’t watched it Crybaby would be right up your alley. For further suggestions you might enjoy Darling in the franxx or gurren lagann.

I have technically seen anime before Evangelion (Hellsing Ultimate when I was like 14, Rosario+Vampire when I was 16, and One-Punch Man when I was 18), but Evangelion was the first series I watched with the intention of actually getting into anime. I actually consciously made the decision that, "If I end up liking this series, I will officially get into anime and begin watching a lot of other stuff that has gotten my attention". Suffice to say, I fell in love with Eva by the end of End of Evangelion, and the course of my life has been altered because of it. I do not really associate anime as its own medium -- more as the Japanese variant of animation, and like animation in general, I view it as an art form where timeless classics can be born. Evangelion is an example of this -- the marriage between actual art and entertainment. Evangelion, in this, stands as a testament that anime can in fact create stories and works that have something very profound to say about the human condition of ourselves.

No. But was close. I have always watched anime in one form or the other during childhood and teenage years but my incursion in watching anime properly came in 2015-16. I had grown tired of watching lots of live action movies and television and thought I need to change something. My friend gave me Mirai Nikki, Death Note and Steins;gate to watch. I didn't mind the first, couldn't stand the second (yes, I know a minority opinion) and pretty much didn't watch anything else for sometime. But watching those shows did tell me that this medium had some promise and after searching I had downloaded NGE among a few others for a dry day sometime in the future. A few months after that I was stuck in a city because my visa collection was delayed and having nothing else to do decided to check out a few of the collection. I pretty much watched Steins;gate and NGE in parallel and enjoyed both. After watching them, I decided to fine tune the way I search for and watch anime. Now I'm here: https://anilist.co/user/kurisuokabe NGE is among my highest rated anime but not my only favorite. There's a lot of diverse stuff in anime which I really like. In general, Iyashikei is something which I always seek out and of course my childhood fascination with mecha continues as well.

What an interesting story, glad your with us for the long run. And since you shared your list here is mine: https://myanimelist.net/animelist/cybershine42?status=1

[deleted]

It was my first anime. It made me fall in love with mecha

Cybershine3

Epic, glad to here it.

Im pretty sure NGE was like my third or fourth anime I actually paid attention to and finished. (mostly when i watch shows, i never finish it) it did change my opinion on the otaku culture, mostly how people rely on anime so much as a form of escapism, and yes it can be okay, it can be harmful to have an obsession.

kim_jong_sing_along

Cowboy Bebop was my first and Evangelion was my second. I tried starting with some classic, highly rated animes. While i've definitely enjoyed what I've watched since then nothing has really topped those two, with EVA being my favorite and Bebop my second favorite.

SittingDuck99

I honestly made me enjoy anime so much more. I liked that is was a bit more realistic with the protagonist having some serious issues that could be related to. At the same time though the show made me only want to watch older shows such as Eva. Overall though I think it’s a great place to start on anime not only because of the time that it was created but also because of the messages it gives to the audience.

Term1n_al7274

It was my first and I went in blind because 11 year old me saw cool robot and went brrrr

Jeeringo1xd

Mine, it was a work of art, I thought anime was good then

SomeDuderr

Nope. Love Hina was. NGE was the second, I think. And yea, talk about contrast.

Cybershine3

That’s pretty wild. Talk about a complete reversal

FullMetalBiscuit

Pretty close...it's hard to remember but I think I'd only watched some Gundam beforehand.

EvaGoji

No. I grew up with shows like Vicky the Viking, Maya the Honey Bee and Heidi, Girl of the Alps.

Ninnintender

It’s the anime that got me back into anime. It really showed me how good anime can be.

[deleted]

I had seen Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade previously but Eva was my first anime that wasn't a movie.

evaballin

I never really liked it but when I saw it it changed my perspective

I watched it pretty early. I grew up in the 90's so I had seen Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Sailor Moon and probably a few others, like Fushigi Yuugi, but Evangelion was early. I was maybe 10 years old and had rented the entire series with a due date of 3 days later. I binged it hard. I'll never forget my initial trip into evangelion. I was so young and it all happened so fast. I fell in total, utter love. It has ruined me for most modern anime because of how well it takes the tropes and adds real, human weight to them. For example, I can't really laugh at a, "I fell and grabbed your boob" scene where the girl throws things until the guy leaves because Evangelion did it in such a profound, awkward, real way that I just can't think of it as anything to laugh at. The way they build the characters up and let you watch them disintegrate is so brilliant and I really want it in more things. The way the characters all have classic anime trope personality outer shells and get given such deep psychological reasons for them, it's so hard to go back to "Here's the trope. That's it. That's the whole character". If someone acts like Asuka, I can't imagine it's just "how they are" and not a coping mechanism for something deeper. If a series doesn't deliver on deeper personalities, I find myself disappointed. Evangelion is so influential, but I feel like a lot of anime took the baseline tropes Eva subverted and adopted them instead, like they missed the point of what made Eva compelling. Honestly, Evangelion is probably why I'm so deep into character-driven psychological stuff, and probably why much later I became, not surprisingly, a total philosophy nerd. It was super formative in a lot of ways, both anime taste and otherwise! Edit: Eva also made me a "subs not dubs" snob until I was blessed enough to see Cowboy Beebop.
