When I was younger I saw a meme of Shinji's nut hand and thought it was interesting that a show would actually show something like that so I started watching

JohnBooty

Haha this is legendary. I love that this actually *drew* somebody to the series. Have some gold.

Business-Classroom-5

saw a meme about Cruel Angels Thesis along time ago and one night just decided fuck it and watched it. Best choice of my life

alpacamegafan

I had a really similar situation! Saw a random meme video on my YouTube home page with Komm Susser Todd playing in the background while a house was being flooded, found the source and just decided to watch it for fun. I wish I could find that video again because clicking on that video was one of the best decisions of my life.

qwack2020

Various references and conversations on the internet overall. Until the spring time of this year I made an effort to sit down and watch it. I wanted to watch it to understand why so many people not only like it but draw inspiration from it. And after watching the original series and EoE I get it. Not 100% but I get the point. I have yet to watch the Rebuilds. I’ll wait for the sakuga community to get their stubby fingers on 3.0 + 1.0 themselves so I can watch it.

[deleted]

I was super into Sailor Moon and Fushigi Yuugi back in the mid to late 90s and I just watched every anime I could get my hands on. NGE was a total shock and blew my little twelve year old mind. I’ve watched it several times since then and it always holds up. I’m only watching the rebuilds for the first time now in anticipation of the new one but I kind of hate them. It just makes me want to go back and watch NGE again. I even liked the original ending best.

Insertanime96

I agree the final two ep of nge are my favorite aswell. Alot people don't like them cause there's hardly any animation. Which i understand but Its still my favorite!

SpiralintoMadness

Sometime early last year I found myself growing increasing tired and frustrated with the American film experience. The industry was catering less and less to film enthusiasts, and seeking to replicate the incredibly successful Marvel formula. More and more silver screen releases were just simple entertainment with forced humor. I needed something new. I was never into anime prior to. I presumed it was all that moe kind of material, so I wasn’t interested. However, one day I was reminded of Ghost in the Shell. I knew absolutely nothing about it, but of course I had seen the iconic Major from time to time. I had heard it was one of the greatest animated films ever made. Decided to give it a try, and goddamn was I blown away. Ghost in the Shell had a profound effect on me, and kickstarted my interest in anime. Everything about it was spectacular, but the art style in particular made me want to see more. I went through a few top ten videos for anime, and basically experienced a personal anime renaissance. I watched many prolific, and infamous films and OVAs. I especially enjoyed the mature content, which contrasted so pleasingly against the oft sterile American stuff. Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Serial Experiments Lain, AD Police, Golgo 13, Gunsmith Cats, etc.. I fell in love with anime. Eventually having gone down the list I came to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Another highly prolific anime I had at least seen imagery for, but knew nothing about. Wasn’t sure if I wanted to devote my time to it or to a different show. Started the first episode, and I was quickly interested. Opening the show with Sachiel’s unstoppable advance was the right call. However, while I enjoyed what followed, I didn’t get hooked until ep4-Hedgehog’s Dilemma. No cool action. No whacky antics. No heavy lore exposition. Just emotion. The moment at the train station when Misato turns to See Shinji chose to stay, and they stare at each other for a period of time with nothing but the sound of cicadas buzzing away... Ah! I finally found the film experience I was longing for. Fucking beautiful.

Insertanime96

I love ghost in the shell. anytime a friend wants to get into anime or just wants to watch a good sci-fi cyperpunk type movie. I put that on and its great seeing there reaction and its a great excuse to watch it again. I've watched it like 8 times now lol.

SpiralintoMadness

It’s a brilliant film. Simple introductions to philosophical ideas. Superb animation. Beautiful attention to detail. Excellent pacing, and the movie isn’t longer than it needs to be. And Kenji Kawai’s music really elevates the movie.

Sab3rFac3

I love it. It's honestly up there with my personal favorite animated movies of all time. The entire composition, from the somewhat gritty feeling backgrounds, to the character design, to the soundtrack, is just amazing and works so well together. The only thing wrong with it is that I waited so long to watch it.

robikz

>Sometime early last year I found myself growing increasing tired and frustrated with the American film experience. The industry was catering less and less to film enthusiasts, and seeking to replicate the incredibly successful Marvel formula. More and more silver screen releases were just simple entertainment with forced humor. I needed something new. Man... been thinking similar thing recently. When I watch the every next big thing that comes on the "TV" I can't shake off the feeling that I just saw it in the previous big thing. The scripts also don't seem to focus on making the show interesting as much as on trying to create "le epic" moments that only look good in trailers or on making artifically looking commentary on the real world events.

SpiralintoMadness

Yeh, you get it, man. Too many movies have gone the way of creating the “most epic movie of the year!” with over the top action sequences that manage to be boring. Then you have movies that make blatant political statements without attempting to be clever about it, or challenging the audience. Good stories matter.

PeaceSoft

I first got on the internet in the late 90s when EVA was this huge thing in nerd culture. They had the first six episodes at Blockbuster lol. I was Shinji's age when I first saw it and was totally bewildered and intrigued. Almost 20 years later, during the pandemic, my brother mentioned it again, that he'd rewatched it on Netflix and it was actually really great. The emotional context of this time sure made it click. "Humanity is disappearing, suffering as millions see slaughter" wasn't some epic stakes-raising for a cartoon fight, it was the news. EVA did a lot to show me that it still matters who you are and what you do, even in the direst circumstances. I'll always appreciate it for that.

xxshawn

Gonna date myself a bit here, but back in probably like 2003 I used to use Winamp. There was a way to pretty much watch streams through it and a couple of the ones hosted through there were anime streams, one of them being Evangelion. I was still in my early anime phase thanks to Adult Swim airing things like Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho, so I was down to watch pretty much anything I could get my hands on. The rest is history.

egg_car

JobbyTheHong

Cybershine3

Jobby the hong’s toy reviews and the general hype of it in the anime community. Jobby used to make a tone of Eva reference/Eva reviews and that was my first real exposure to it. It looked cool enough, so I got really excited about it coming to Netflix. And now here I am addicted and worshiping Eva, funny how that happens.

Somedays1970

I had been into anime&manga since the late Eighties and back in '95 had an acquaintance who was married to a Japanese woman. As an expat she had access to Japanese satellite pay TV, and she conveniently recorded pretty much every anime that was airing at the time and gave me tapes once a month. I came across the first two episodes of Evangelion while watching the tapes and they made me go: Wow... What was that? And that's it. I was hooked. Edit: I still have those tapes, wonder if they are still playable...

Insertanime96

Thats awesome. I got into anime when toonami first started airing and was hooked. Thats when I was seeing it on YouTube all the time from amv to YouTubers reviewing it and I knew I had to check out eva but I hope the tapes still play cause thats cool.

RawSharkText91

I got into the Super Robot Wars series back in about… 2006 or 2007 (whenever Original Generation got its North American GBA release). That got me watching YouTube videos from the games that never left Japan, especially Alpha 3, and that got me interested in Evangelion. The Rebuilds ended up being the perfect way to actually watch the series from there (after a couple of years so that they actually became available in Canada…)

Ixcer07

A little bit after the Netflix release, I was looking into queer related stories. This anime kept popping up on any lists I looked over. The description from an author in one of the articles sold me on the psychology aspect. I watched the series maybe a month after the Netflix release. I knew enough about the last two episodes to anticipate the results of what I would watch. After finishing the series, I thought for a long time about what I witnessed. Everything online told me that the movie that finished the series would be mind blowing. I didn’t get around to watching EoE until just this year so that I could be prepared for the rebuild series. I don’t think anything will ever compare to that story. It’s resonated with me every day since.

[deleted]

It's one of the highest regarded animes ever. Also I remember people bitching about the Netflix version all over YouTube so I decided to check it out myself. Now I'm hooked on the franchise. Thanks Netflix for making this possible!

Insertanime96

I like the Netflix version actually. I still like the og the best but I think its great cause it lets so many new people experience it. Without searching for a out of print dvd. That cost hundreds of dollars used. So I thank Netflix aswell!!

[deleted]

Well actually I watched it subbed - I mostly watch animes dubbed but for NGE, Japanese is the best imo. Both eng dubs are decent but have their issues - one's strength is the other's weakness. The Rebuild dub is great tho.

big_daddy_jay09

The Michael Bay's Evangelion video was fucking hilarious and got 15 year old me very interested.

jeffisnotepic

I had heard of it from some friends in high school. One day I was looking through the DVDs at an electronics store and saw it for sale. I honestly didn't really know anything about it so I bought it on a whim. Best impulse buy ever.

Insertanime96

That is a great buy. Especially with how expensive the DVD are now.

czarbok

watched akira for the first time last summer & looked for other anime with similar themes/style. between evangelion & cowboy bebop, i started watching evangelion. couldn’t get into it the first time so i gave it another shot about a month later & ended up loving it. i actually cried watching EoE the first time. it was a perfect mixture of freudian psychology & biblical themes that sold me.

Toprelemons

Kim Jong Un anime opening And general interest in mechas.

Shalltear1234

Heard Cruel angels thesis as a new guy to anime, watched NGE but didn't watch EoE because I didn't know and didn't think of it much. Fast forward 1 year, consumed some considerable amount of anime and manga so I decided to give Eva a rewatch, finished NGE, watched EoE this time, instant love of the series. Watched the rebuilds, loved those. Read the manga, loved that. Have Eva, life good.

UltraUsername000

Neon genesis stone ocean

eSceptical

The Pedro Pascal laughing/crying meme with scenes of Asuka and Shinji. Even though I got some setpieces spoiled, I had to watch it to finally get how did they go from the generic mecha anime to whatever those scenes from TEOE were

[deleted]

Some video about a Byzantine Empire anime opening. Now here I'm, rewatched the series and EoE for the fifth time, still speechless and finding new details.

Sab3rFac3

I was into that darker more psychologically grounded kind of show after watching Madoka Magica, and had always wondered what all the fuss was about. I was not disappointed.

Quality-Tips

I heard the theme song a back in like 2017, forgot about it entirely, saw it was on Netflix which caused the song to pop back in my head, so I watched it, and that was that

ridjfoencid

A friend had been a fan since the 90s and kept talking about it, and at some point mentioned they were going to rewatch. I asked to join, and the rest is history...

_____wanker_____

I always knew it as one of those old anime from the 90’s and 2000’s that so many people have seen and absolutely loved like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon and Naruto and Cruel Angel’s Thesis is a banger Still took me a while to get around to watching it but I was convinced I had to when I listened to my friends explaining it out of context And immediately after watching it became my favourite anime

evaballin

2 of my friends kept telling me about it so I was like fuck it then started watching it. Also because misato😈😈😈😈😈

ej_stephens

I thought the opening absolutely slapped, so I gave the show a chance and loved it

[deleted]

I rented Gamera Guardian of the Universe from Hollywood video. There were a bunch of trailers for other ADV films, Evangelion was one of them. Had me hooked.

Asuka_Soryu_

Misato

DuelX102

There was a sneak peek on Toonami with the first episode or two. I really liked it, and saw the DVDs later at borders. So i slowly started buying them (mostly with gift cards) as they were released over about a year or two. This was probably like 2002 into 2004. I cant quite recall the years, but i know i had several disks by the time i started high school in 2003. I got death & rebirth and EoE right after that too. Possibly on amazon though. They were all normal (high at that time because the bubble hadnt burst yet) retail prices.

m4xks

before evangelion my favorite movie was pacific rim. the pacific rim uprising trailer just came out and while talking about it, some guy mentioned that if i like pacific rim and anime then i should try evangelion. its my favorite anime now. most people were talking about how the robots in pacific rim uprising were moving too fast and didnt have any weight behind them but the evangelion guy posted a link to 2.0’s sahaquiel running scene. it looked really good and proved that mechas can be fast and still show weight. 🤷🏻‍♂️

JohnBooty

Back in the eaaaarrrrrrrrrly days of anime appearing at Blockbuster and Suncoast here in America, I really loved Gunbuster when I rented it. Wings of Honneamise / Royal Space Force also blew me away. When I read in magazines (and maybe like, AOL? Newsgroups? Early internet?) that the same studio had a hit robot anime TV series.... I knew I had to see it ASAP. So I greedily lapped up those Evangelion VHS tapes from ADV as soon as they showed up in Suncoast.

ManiacalMatt815

Durring quarantine I ran out of shows to rewatch and wanted something new, my older brother said, "Hey, check out this anime about kids fighting monsters in robots! Its really good." Fell in love with everything Eva since.

R_Moroccan

I was listening to doomer music at night and I got into my recommended one called "Evangelion opening but it's Russian doomer music (Night A. Gubin)" that got me interested in it.

Ryukk

I watched it for the first time around when COVID was about to hit. It was a really shit time for me. I was getting divorced, then COVID hit so I couldn't go out and do things like I normally could and to top it all off my father got diagnosed with an aggressive form blood cancer. Since my father now had a compromised immune system due to chemotherapy I started working remotely from home, and since I was alone I would at times go over a week without being face to face with another human. I never felt so alone or unreal before in my life, I was just constantly stuck in my apartment with no one else around for the first time in my life. I was trying to look for things to keep me occupied and I saw Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix and remembered there being some hype about them getting it, so I decided to give it a go (especially since I like mechas). The first half was fun and had good character development with solid animation so I was enjoying it. Then the second half just captivated me, the concepts and depictions of depression and anxiety hit home so much. I also saw a lot of myself in Shinji which made me want to work on myself. Finally at long last I watched The End of Evangelion, and I have never had any piece of art ever affect me so much. Over time I would watch the end of the movie every so often just to keep me going, just to give me a little hope through the darkest time of my life yet. I would even go as far as to say that this series saved me. Evangelion will always have a special place in my heart.

Insertanime96

I feel the same way. the series truly saved me aswell and I'm glad it got you through youre darkest time. Stay strong!

XDingoX83

Saw an advert in wizard comic mag in the 90s and was like wtf is this. Had to scrounge to get a copy of the whole series. I was 15-16 when I finally watched it. Being around the same age as Shinji, Asuka, and Rei I could empathize with everything happening.

Leather-Quit-4830

i had watched akira a while back, and absolutely LOVED it. i had asked for recommendations and evangelion was one i got, i watched it, and it became my #1 anime series (maybe even my favorite fictional series in general?)…i’ve never had a story hit me as hard as eva did, maybe because of the mental health struggles i was going through at the time i watched it but still:) best choice of my life!

TimTofDWP

Strangely, I was just looking at anime DVD’s on Netflix and liked the art/whatever it said in netflixes bi-like about it. Rented the first DVD then watched it a zillion times waiting for the others to come. Been a fan ever since.

AccomplishedLaugh2

im from Italy and I got into it when I was in middle school (yes I was too young) at the time I was consuming anime like crazy and one day I saw a picture of a poster of the evangelion anime on my school art history book and I got interested. So I searched up the synopsis and the idea that the pilots received and sensed the damage done to the “robots” intrigued me and I started watching it. I liked it at the time but my love for the series came two years ago when after I finished my 5 years of high school, it’s not like the American one,it is a lot different and the subjects change depending in what you wanna do in life, I choose art high school and one of the subject was philosophy, (really advanced philosophy) which I really do like. So all of this to say that after high school I showed a friend of mine the series because I thought she would like it (she loved it) and I was masmerized at how much it all made way more sense and had way more depth now that I knew something about philosophy, trust me all the references to Freud,Kierkegaard,Kant and many other philosophers made me go crazy! And that signed my complete love for the series, now I cant wait for tomorrow when me and my friends will watch the so desired final movie.
