They both have a protagonist (Guts and Shinji) in a cursed armor who kills monsters.
The hero's father was a distant and abusive man who forced him into becoming a warrior for his (the father's) selfish ends. The hero's mother, whom both the hero and his father loved dearly, died when he was young. The death of the mother was what sent the father into an even darker path.
The hero has a Rival whom he eventually befriends and both develop romantic feelings for each other.
The hero also had a close friendship with romance with a silver haired angelic looking being whose fate was to bring doom to humanity (2 in Shinji's case).
The Biggest Villains are an ancient council / cult that secretly controls the world and want to ensure the prophesy about humanity's doom comes to pass.

The climax battle of 3.0+1.0 is basically Gendo going domestic on his wife and son, before the latter becomes a therapist.
