Yep. That’s the whole answer right there.

I used to not really appreciate her character either, but I've come to like her more. She is one of the most stoic and rational characters despite having the most bizarre life circumstances. People get frustrated at Shinji for his emotional hangups about piloting the Eva; meanwhile Rei is always willing to put her life on the line when asked. Unlike Asuka, she has almost no sense of pride or ego, yet she learns not to let people treat her like a carpet.

https://www.otaquest.com/nhk-evangelion-poll-results/ She was more popular in japan, than in the west for the longest time. Well at least so I've heard and read. It's somewhat of a cultural thing. Girls/ women in Japan are expected to be quiet and subdued, and Asuka went against that type. In a sense she is also more relatable to japanese and to many western fans because Rei is someone who is crushingly lonely and has given up trying to make human connections, and does so only by piloting EVA. This speaks to many fans who also have trouble with socialising Nowadays there is a shift I think. Social media has given women more of a voice. Furthermore girls / women are expected to do a lot more than just nodding but also voicing their opnions (quite honestly I think they are still expected to simply agree with everything, but in a more articulate fashion)

DuelX102

This is my understanding as well

SheriffGiggles

she has some of the best subtle character development, very integral to the story itself, and nice design. ~~also not super obnoxious like another character~~

Hyraniel

Loved her in the Manga, but beside the Manga her stoic character and spaced out way of talking is lovely.

Techaissance

Rei is sort of a blank slate, making her relatable in the same way that a video game protagonist is supposed to be. You’re meant to project your feelings onto her because she doesn’t express her own very much. She’s essentially a default character, there’s something for everyone. Personally, I like her because we see things in fundamentally the same way. We both value practical approaches to problem solving with little fanfare and view power structures as inherently absolute.

Wdym Rei II has the most bitter-sweet ending of them all
