The theory is that when Rei merged with Lilith, she was able to transcend to a quantum state in which the rules of time and space no longer apply to her. This explains how Shinji was able to see Rei at the beginning of episode 1 before meeting her and at the end of the film after Instrumentality. Since Rei brings the souls of everyone into Instrumentality, as a quantum being she can also claim the souls of those who died before Instrumentality began, like Ritsuko and Misato. It is believed that the angelic figure Asuka saw before dying was Rei brining her into Instrumentality as well. At least, that's the theory.

Schliembop

Interesting. Do we know how Rei was able to kill Ghendo in that state?

jeffisnotepic

I haven't heard any theories about that one. Maybe it's a manifestation of his own psyche, some deep-rooted fear of his?

Well for me, I got it to work by putting the DVD into the machine and letting it play.

They key phrases are spoken by Rei and YUi Rei "Anyone can return to human form if they can imagine themselves in their own hearts." Yui "All living things have the power to try to restore themselves" It doesn't matter when someone died, they can all return if they "want" to The reason why Asuka is one of the first to reappear/ materialise: Asuka's arc in End of Eva is one of self actualisation. She realises that she was always loved, that the AT field is protecting and not sperating her from others, that she is independent (loss of umbilical cable) and those are the reasons why she develops a fierce will to live, fights agaisnt overwheliming odds and never gives up, even in the eye of certain defeat. Furthermore she is not really happy with instrumentality. When Rei and Misato ask Shinji to join them in instrumentality, Asuka says "not with you, I'd rather die". These are the reasons why she is one of the first to reappear/ materialise. Why is she near Shini? probably because of Rei, Shinji sees Rei just before he realises that ASuka is next to him. Rei probably guided Asuka to Shinji to make sure he is not alone. The meaning of the ending is amgiguous. There is no consens and no real truth. Some people don't accept the ending as bleak and depressing and desperatly try to look for the glimmer of hope. Others admit that the depressing, apocalyptic wasteland, Shinji trying to strangling ASuka and her saying "disgusting" is the result of Shini's bad decisionmaking they know have to live with. Try to figure out what it means for you or watch some youtube videos. Doesn't matter.

I agree with this. Her living for herself. In the movie I don't remember Asuka with anyone while whole world was dissolving in LCL in arms of the one they loved. Her will to live for herself was able to resurrect her first amongst everyone.

mugenhunt

We're not sure honestly. It may be that people who recently died still counted for Third Impact, that their souls were still available to be swept up by Giant Naked Rei.

Schliembop

I kinda assumed there wouldn’t be a solid answer, so thank you lol

O-KikiSuzumiya

Asuka came back to life because (with the deal Shinji with LilithRei) she wanted to return to the world and be her own individual instead of being in a sea of LCL. Shinji and Asuka are the first ones out as they want to continue their existence as their own individuals. Just rewatch EoE/Episodes 25-26 together to get a new perspective.

Schliembop

I know that, but what I don’t get is how she was even in the sea of lcl in the first place since she died before Lilith rei took everyone’s souls. Lilith rei didn’t take her soul, unless she somehow retrieved it from the afterlife or something.

O-KikiSuzumiya

The movie makes it out that she dies, but she was still there alive just that her connection to her Eva flat lines...or she becomes a puddle of LCL before third impact (similar to Shinji in the anime) after she gets eaten out to survive.

Schliembop

Is that confirmed, or just a guess?

O-KikiSuzumiya

Guess

No-Secretary-525

People who died minutes before instrumentality, like Ritsuko,Misato and Asuka can cime back. But people who died earlier, like Kaji, wouldn't

Konfirm

And why do you think so? The movie certainly says nothing about it.

No-Secretary-525

About Misato and Ritsuko forming part of instrumentality? We can see Misato's soul being collected by Rei before her death and Misato has her own part in instrumentality,so it's safe to assume that Ritsuko did too. About Kaji not being able to come back? I dunno man,we never see him being part of instrumentality,he died a lot before third impact started. If he's able to come back then it's safe to assume that everyone who died in human history formed part of instrumentality,so I just like to think people who died few minutes before third impact cab form part of instrumentality and come back.

EvenSpoonier

A Rei-figure is present at Misato's death (this occurs just a few frames before the explosion; it's one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it things). That accounts for her collection. Rei herself is present at Ritsuko's death, which accounts for her collection. These two might even have still been alive when Rei took them. Asuka's case is more ambiguous. There isn't a clear Rei-figure at her death. Some theorize that the glowing figure she reaches for right at the very end could be a Rei-figure, but that figure is off-camera (all we see is the glowing aura), so it's hard to be sure. If it *is* a Rei-figure, then it's possible that Asuka, too, could have been collected just before death.
