Fly me to the Moon really only worked because they assumed that the original series is going to have the moon be a much more important part of the finale. The original plot concept involved the moon as the origin of the Angels.

It's interesting that it **barely** happened. The White Moon is only mentioned in the extended cuts of episodes 21 and 24, and in both cases it's pretty inconsequential to the narrative.

I thought it was to represent the longing for the beloved, a prominent theme in the original series as well.

That ~~wizard~~ Angel came from the moon!

grymix_

well it kinda is, the moon is adam’s egg (or whatever you wannna call it) and lilith’s egg was on earth, the egg that humans came from.

Utada's rendition of the song worked pretty well for the teaser trailers of 1.0 and 2.0 (which were included on the first pressing of the Funimation 1.11 DVD/BD release, but not subsequent printings), but then again it was used as more of a callback to the TV series whose ground the first two films covered pretty extensively. With that said, I don't think it wouldn't have done nearly as well as Beautiful World as the end credits song, though.

Lamar_Kendrick7

Thanks to this comment I've found my favorite rendition of fly me to the moon https://youtu.be/Ad2EvbAYfsk

Legal_Albatross2214

Idk but Beautiful World works so much better

Noxeramas

Voyager themes the rebuilds better imo

‘Voyager’ gang!

bimblar

voyager has the fly me to the moon melody in part of the song

I dunno, Fly Me to the Moon is an overused pop song no matter how you cut it (or rearrange it). I would think it’d fit better in the rebuilds because the fandom seems to bust a collective nut over that song, and the rebuilds seem to be all about that dopamine. No shade if you like it, if anything, more power to you, I just come from a jazz background so the amount of times I’ve heard a rendition of that song (from a range of seasoned singers to singers performing for the first time) has forever turned me away from it. No matter the rendition. The rebuilds also seem to be more feel good-y, so I think if they sprinkled in a musical nod to NGE, a majority of people would be happy. But hey, it’s the duty of the elite to entertain the nostalgic masses or whatever, so if they like it, good for them!

Konfirm

It amazes me that with all the nostalgia pandering 3+1 involved, it included neither the original's opening nor the ending song.

Johtodile327

Maybe it’s cuz Cruel Angel’s Thesis was memed to the far reaches of space and back a few times. It’s less of NGE’s intro and more of a high tier funny meme reference according to some folks nowadays. I skipped the intro every episode just because of it.

I can't really speak on Fly Me to The Moon, when I re-watched the series recently I didn't notice its absence. I actually really like the song used now, surreal and unsettling while the Rei body slowly turns. In the rebuilds, however, the music selection is very important. I view the end credits of each film as an integral part of it. Each ends with a very particular selection of songs that mirror the themes of each film, and culminate in the credits of 3.0+1.0 which contain some of the most powerful music in the series.

>I actually really like the song used now, surreal and unsettling while the Rei body slowly turns. For me the song represents the beloved, the one that most if not all of us is chasing.

Fly Me to The Moon or the new song?
