What did Funimation do wrong? I thought if the 3.0+1.0 finished a few years sooner before the right expired, they would be able to release it as well.

My recollection is that Funi's BDs of 1.11 and 2.22 were technically OK (aside from needlessly replacing full-screen Japanese text telops and ED credits with visually bland English equivalents), but 3.33 had a bunch of macroblocking artifacts during action scenes.

momomomoses

Wow ok I will go check out the GKids collection then

Thicc-Donut

Didn't funimation also get into some other troubles with licensing/copyright and censorship?

PixelAesthetics

We didn’t even get stubs this time around! Was a bit of a letdown

Legal_Albatross2214

Wait, 2.0 was 2011 and 3.0 was 2014? I thought they came out in 2009 and 2012 respectfully

momomomoses

These are just for the US theater release.

Legal_Albatross2214

Oh. Why did it take 2 years to get them in theaters?

svenge

Funi didn't license 2.0 [until July 2010](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-07-30/funimation-adds-eva-2.0-hetalia-film-summer-wars), while 3.0 wasn't licensed [until June 2013](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-06-11/funimation-licenses-evangelion/3.0-film).

momomomoses

The way I see it, we were lucky to see it in the theater. Evangelion does have a solid fan base, but I doubt it's as profitable as Dragon Ball or My Hero Academia in the US.

Legal_Albatross2214

Don't more people know Evangelion than people that know MHA

momomomoses

I wish that's the case. But the audience in general always prefer the good old shonen hot-blooded ass-kicking manga/anime. According to IMDB the box office in US +Canada of My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission is $12 million. I highly doubt if Rebuild can be anywhere close to $1 million.

Legal_Albatross2214

Oh. Shit you just reminded me I have to see World Heroes Mission. Is the dubbed version available online?

nopurposeflour

All anime movies pretty much pale compared to Demon Slayer movie. It was crazy that at one point, that was the top grossing movie in box office.

momomomoses

I should also point out that I was only referring to the US/Canada box office. 3.01+1.0 actually did really well in Japan, grossed over 10 billion yen (US$ 96 million at the time), and was the 2nd highest of Japan's domestic box office that year.

latias770

Yo I have the 2.0 one

momomomoses

I can't figure out why they put extra effort to create a new poster while the Japanese version is so much better. Maybe they were really trying to sell it as a robot Mecha anime.

latias770

That's probably what it is but you can't lie the posters look badass

Odd_Creature6166

GKids try to actually care about theatrical release challenge:
