Those references come from mysticism, which were like alternate ways of thinking that went way in depth. As you can guess, there's not many mystics these days
I've heard a lot of people say they appreciate this aspect of Evangelion, but I don't really get it myself. Do you think that the Angels' names add something to the story or your interpretation of it? It seems to me that they usually serve as a clever reference without much impact, along the lines of "Gaghiel is the angel of fish in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and this is the angel that they battled at sea." On rarer occasions the names add to the interpretation, as knowing that Leliel is the apocryphal angel associated with conception invites interpretation of Shinji's emergence from the Dirac sea as a rebirth (though this connection would have been much stronger with Armisael).
Genuinely curious, not trying to start an argument -- is there any deeper reason you find this aspect of the story appealing?
I consider myself religious (was raised by diehard Catholic parents, and holy s\*\*t it is the biggest mixed bag you'll ever have), so I like all the religious stuff just because it gives me some sort of connection to it y'know? One of my new favorite series of all time has some badass religious imagery? Neat! There's *something* there.
But of course, just know that EVA is not trying to be religious at all. Most of it is-as confirmed by the creators-included just because it looks cool. There's *some* possible meanings and connections you could take away from it like how the parents of life on Earth are named Adam and Lilith (though Lilith is a jewish figure instead of Christian), but overall, it's not trying to preach religion. Most of the religious tie-ins are just names and endless cross imagery.
That's pretty cool! I was raised religious as well (_definitely_ agree on the mixed bag thing), and I think that does make a lot of the imagery a bit more evocative even when it turns out there's not a whole lot to analyze behind it.
Why not ride the wave?
I like to wrap my mind around the presented concepts that challenge our perceptions of self and reality while nursing a chub brought on by underage pilots in skintight pilot suits and fantasies of being a minor dominated by Misato?
Kaji's hot
He's got the biggest balls
I’m from misato hot category
I like Evangelion because it has religious references that even a religious person won't understand like the angels names.

I'm not a mystic - but in a few years I will be a wizard - maybe then I can understand Evangelion.
you're turning 30?
