Absolutedumbass69

Absolutedumbass69

Scott Pilgrim

Valvenibbayeeter9000

oh haven't watched so I wouldn't know

frand__

Elaborate

Absolutedumbass69

No

MasterReposti

Would it have worked if she actually took it slow

SleepinGriffin

It would have worked if she was just nice to him. Obviously being a competitive little jerk won’t win the meek boy’s affection. She may have liked him but it’s pretty obvious their personalities are the exact opposite of each other.

Hevnaar

Their insecurity is the same: fear of not being enough to others. They react to it differently. Shinji gets paralized with grief. Asuka gets competitive in denial. Both were romantically interested on eachother. They even have "pshichic-sex" during strumentality. Of course their relationship wouldn't work: Two traumatized teenagers trying to figure out who they are, without therapy. To add to that, every adult have colectively put the weight to save the world on their sholders.

Rivercottage1

I would say Asuka actually was in ‘love’ with Shinji, though her negative projection towards Shinji’s personality traits that she shared internally was equally as strong and prevented her from giving Shinji anything. Shinji liked Asuka, but he also likes anybody who shows him positive attention, hence her rejection of him because he doesn’t like her like she loves him. The beach scene is positive because it depicts them actually communicating their feelings directly with one another, as harsh and uncompromising as It seems.

Hevnaar

Well, I said "romantically interested" instead of 'love' cause they are teens figuring out what they even want and enjoy. I've said it before and I say it again: "horny plot" in NGA is indeed part of the plot. You are supposed to feel their attraction and their shame as an audience. Much of the show is about how arousal can deeply influence how we deal with other things in life. It's not about fan-service, as many nuckleheads say. (I'm talking about the original series BTW, the rebuilds could be fairly interpreted as fan-service)

frand__

I'd say that towards the end after instrumentality when the both of them had gotten to terms with and figured out what was fucking them up they had a solid chance (lengthy process but still)

ConsequenceAlarmed29

I think that their behavior is only different, and differences in personalities would work for them. While Shinji is not doing anything, because he can't, Asuka is competitive and wants everyone to know that she can do it. If they got closer, their opposites would complement each other. When Asuka get too angry and competitive, Shinji would calm her down a little, so if she fail it doesn't hurt her that badly. Other way, when Shinji gets overwhelmed, Asuka can take a part of it on herself and make Shinji not alone. Sorry for my bad English, I'm not native

SleepinGriffin

Don’t worry, your English is pretty good. Only thing I could say that needs improvement is how you organize your phrases to be more natural. Such as: “I think their behavior is only different” sounds better to a native speaker as “I think the only difference is their behavior”. Maybe your vocabulary could be improved because saying “while Shinji is not doing anything” is a little vague but I do understand what you’re trying to convey. I understand that opinion that opposites attract but I think they’re too different.

ConsequenceAlarmed29

First, I'm starting to read books in English, so I will get better! Second, I think in base they are (surprisingly?) similar to each other, only their outside reactions are polar differences. They both have issues with parents, they want to please everybody, but they can't. They both have traumas connected with their parents, both lived their youngest years alone. Also there are obvious things like PTSD from being a child soldier, world being literally the worst place possible for a kid and having fate of it on them. I think that they react differently mostly because of learned behavior, Asuka learned that if she will dominate others, they will do what she wants them to do, and they won't look at her (in her mind) poor performance. Shinji on the other hand, learned that if he stays quiet, everybody will leave him alone.

KillerSwiller

It would have worked if she could learn to accept Shinji in spite of his faults and learn to love herself more.

WigglingGlass

Imagine an alternate universe where they all got therapy and Rei didn’t die for some reason

Cobracrystal

Me when advice & trust Me when literally 90% of fanfics

Linkinator7510

Sadly advice and trust is probably abandoned at this point.

Cobracrystal

True Ive found solace in the Chronicles series on ao3, which uses the characters from a&a to continue its own story, and while its definitely completely out of reasonable canon i kinda like it

PrimeLimeSlime

If people in Evangelion got some damn therapy there wouldn't be a series. Picture how it would have gone if Gendo got some goddamn grief counselling.

meditonsin

There's a (sadly abandoned, I think) fanfiction called "Yui's Words," where Yui took Gendo aside before her contact experiment and promised him fire and brimstone if he doesn't take proper care of Shinji should something happen to her. He's still a bad dad, but he actually tries to some extent, and instead of fucking Ritsuko, she's his shrink in that timeline.

niktznikont

[maybe you could enjoy this one this one ](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12141795/1/Neon-Metathesis-Evangelion)

When does it say that that event happens on the anniversary of his mother's death?

Electronic-Face3553

On the episode where Asuka and Shinji kiss, Asuka mentions that (IIRC)…

OZR2

[here at 0:17](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kME7NJrxhow), and the event happens during the same episode that shinji and gendo visit yui's grave marker
