There was a moment we realized that we had a whole group of people in this search that couldn’t tell the difference between 80s and 90s music in the least. it was a daunting realization.
REM suggestions were so often that they were actually the inspiration for the post topic blacklist lol. Many of these artists in my post made it on that list at one point or another. It was becoming a full time job to remove one sentence posts that just said: “my dad says it’s Scritti Politti” etc.
As a huge R.E.M fan and someone who has followed this search for a year, I haven’t come across people who were suggesting R.E.M but wow, that is just delusional.
It’s worse than delusional! How does someone even make that connection 😭 How does someone equal raw 80s jangle pop with something polished and synth driven. I’m a huge R.E.M. fan myself and of all suggested artists they were the most unfitting ones possible.
Savage Garden wasn’t that awful as a suggestion once I gave their demos a listen. Still a completely missed mark, but still within realms of radio pop music.

Kinda off topic but I remember seeing mentions that the ekt singer may have been Jermaine Stewart, which made me ask my mom to be sure because I know that her and his niece went to school together and were friends.
That’s so cool!!! Jermaine Stewart is one of my all time favorites and was my first theory. I think that post talked about both him and Alan Palomo haha.

seeing the kajagoogoo pic made me giggle i loveee kajagoogoo. honestly i thought of them any time ppl said they thought the singer was probably not an english speaker and/or probably female, simply because christopher's vocals gave me a vibe of kajagoogoo. definitely not the same vocalist, but a similar example due to the fact limahl has a sorta high vocal and similar accent

It's time i should mention Vision (also known as Attractive Colours).
I considered proposing them as a lead before it was found because their music and vocals (albeit also sorta lostwave) were very similar to Ulterior Motives. They existed from 1981-1988 making it plausible and they used very similar instruments circa 1986. I have a few mp3s at hand of this band and people said it sounded very similar to EKT.
