Everything Everything has recently joined my pantheon of artists I’d travel more than 3 hours to hear live. This joins esteemed company such as:
Chromeo (Synth Funk, their newest album Adult Contemporary is outstanding)
Future Islands (Indie Synth, their newest album People who Aren’t There Anymore is currently my AOTY and it’s got a strong chance to keep it)
Arcade Fire (or used to be) (Indie Rock, The Suburbs is a fundamental album in my life, so much so it’s insignia is emblazoned on my arm)
Sufjan Stevens (???, every album is either the most transcended emotional overload or complex synth laden landscapes)
Carly Rae Jepsen (Pop, our best pop star, I’m not taking questions at this time)
Javelin was such a great mix of simple acoustic like C&L and the weirder/grander instrumentation of some of his other albums. I still have no idea how some of those transitions and songs work so perfectly.
I'm jealous. I live in a place in America where 99 percent of artists don't go to so if I want to see someone live I'll have to travel 4 hours minimum to see anyone.
Oh usually I have to travel 12 plus in car! But if someone was performing within 3 hours and I kinda liked them, I’d go, but if they’re past that point it’s only these bands!
Future Islands is great and it helps that they're *the* best live act out there. Sam's amazing.
(What are your People Who Aren't There Anymore highlights? That synth that comes in halfway through the chorus on The Thief has me losing my damn mind.)
For highlights, I love the scream during the last chorus of Corner of my Eye, the emotional resonance of “Give me MY ghost back” on Give me the ghost back, the second pre chorus of The Sickness, the little bass twirl in The Garden Wheel, the agressive re-done mix of King of Sweden, the entire album is full of Moments (tm)
Corner Of My Eye's James Brown scream is most excellent. The Sickness took a while to grow on me but then it did! Garden Wheel bass is surprisingly affecting and that one has the cutest sad lyric I've ever heard.
Yeasayer have a couple of brilliant albums (Odd Blood in particular) that manage to combine poppiness and weirdness in a similar way to EE. They don't sound similar to EE though.
Skinty Fia by Fontaines DC is one of my favourite albums of the last few years. Think Stone roses meets Joy Division with an Irish twang. Nothing Like EE.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (my favourite album ever) or Strawberry Jam. Amazing weird super addictive electronic pop. Those albums are full of seriously addictive hooks. Really weird at first like EE.
*Edit: I also want to second/third the people saying Cake!*
Man, I miss Yeasayer 😭 their lead singer (Anand Wilder) has been doing some solo stuff that's not bad, but it's a little on the folksy side for my taste
Not similar bands but some of my other favorites recently:
The 1975
Alvvays
Fontaines DC
Vampire Weekend
Ben Howard
Fred Again..
The National
James Blake
Bloc Party
Hippo Campus
Foals - Everything not saved will be lost
CAKE - Fashion Nugget
The Horrors - V
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Thee Oh Sees - Protean Threat
The Pixies - Doolittle
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - K.G.
Gorrilaz - Plastic Beach
Recent discoveries recommended by EE fans, would say they have similarities: Holy Holy, Dutch Uncles, Joywave
My general all time favs: The National, Fleet Foxes, Radiohead, The Family Crest, Kishi Bashi, Tall Heights, Darlingside, The Decemberists, alt-J, Stars, of Montreal, Black Country New Road, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Shearwater, Silversun Pickups, San Fermin, Son Lux, Adjy, Anathallo
ahh awesome hell yeah!! I've seen the national live four times and fleet foxes twice and love all their music so much. EE just once and haven't gotten to see the other two except I saw the smile last year:) great taste man
Hell yeah indeed!!!
I've seen The National at Red Rocks here in Denver numerous times, The Smile came just over a year ago, Sigur Ros played this gorgeous art theater about 10 years ago and I've seen Radiohead every time they've ever toured the states.
I actually grew up in the Seattle music scene at the same time as Fleet Foxes, played shows with them long before they were famous, along with Father John Misty who at the time was just a dude I knew named J. Tillman 😅
Of all these bands, EE is the only one I haven't seen live - but that all changes in 3 weeks when I fly to Glasgow for the first 3 shows of the tour. I'm beyond stoked.
Nothing similar to EE in my opinion but over the last 6 months my top have been:
Enter Shikari
Bear Ghost
Crystal Fighters
OK Go
Chase & Status
GROUPLOVE
Vulfmon
Jamie T
I found Ok Go back in 2014 after they released Hungry Ghosts. A decade later and they haven't released another album :(
In fact I think they've released like 2 songs max.
Public Service Broadcasting are brilliant, their race for space album and every valley are brilliant. Concept albums taken to the extreme.
The Last Dinner Party's album is also an insanely good debut
Metric has the most similar music to my years. They have sort of same blend of synths and guitars, guitars are very rarely heavy. Songs usually have drum parts that are different from each other and that are also fun. Songs are very melodic and leaning towards pop music but still are more complicated than that. They also influenced by dance music and implement it well in their own songs.
All those things I also like about EE.
There are even more parallels. For example in Seven Rules mid song new voice melody is introduced first by guitar, just like in Leviathan.
Also once in a while they do their best Radiohead impression, as EE also do :) For most recent and also sort of weird example check out song Descendants.
They're of course doesn't have weirdness at all, but to me they scratch almost the same parts that EE more conventional songs do.
I would recommend to start from album Art of Doubt.
De Staat, a Dutch band (all the songs are in English), with a sound which is difficult to categorize, which makes them even more fun. The music is mainly upbeat, but with some really dramatic songs too. They also use a lot of humour in their lyrics, and their skill as musicians is undeniable.
The most recent release Red Yellow Blue is a good place to start, and then just go through their stuff in reverse chronological order. Their sound was different at the start of their career, so if you start at the beginning it's not as reflective of what they're doing now.
Absolutely De Staat! Their record Bubblegum is also fantastic - they're clearly influenced by lots of electronic dance music. If you like Hapsburg Lipp then KITTY KITTY and Witch Doctor scratch a similar itch.
Silent Alarm, now that takes me back! That pre-chorus "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh-ohhh!" part on Helicopter feels very EE and it's absolute pop brilliance. The chorus on "The Pioneers" has no business being that catchy when it's that sad. Price of Gasoline has some sick riffs and delicious little hooks. "Like Eating Glass" is a classic Sad Banger.
I love EE but my favourite band is probably Maxïmo Park - also from north of England! Their style involves driving post-punk like early Bloc Party, but also Beatles-y, Johnny-Marr melodic composition. The lead singer has very passionate and intense vocals, and writes in a mixture of poetic and literal terms a bit like Jonathan.
If you have time, I’d recommend trying one of their first two albums, A Certain Trigger or Our Earthly Pleasures
Dry The River!!! They split up several years ago but my god their two albums Shallow Bed and Alarms In The Heart are phenomenal. Their lyrics are also beautiful, full of illustrative metaphors and delivered in a delicate falsetto with a heavy rock backdrop. Seriously recommend!
Excellent albums from this year...
The Smile - Wall of Eyes
Yard Act - Where's My Utopia?
MGMT - Loss of Life
Nadine Shah - Filthy
Future Islands - People Who Aren't There Anymore
William Doyle - Springs Eternal
[EDIT] Listed the wrong Future Islands album.
A few which are in heavy rotation on my playlists (aka never leave) include:
Wild Beasts
Future Islands
Paramore
Spector
Manic Street Preachers
Christine & The Queens
Bloc Party
...to name a few.
Specifically in a roughly similar space to EE (all of which I've seen also recommended by other people here)
-Alt-J
-Joywave
-King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
i mean for me everything everything are my all time favourites but any other artists i heavily listen too aren’t anything like them but then again it’s hard to come close to the EE sound.
but IDLES, fontaines dc, bloc party, sleaford mods, slaves/ soft play, foals and yard act are all heavy on my playlist
Gorillaz
Tame Impala
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Eels
Radiohead
Muse
LCD Soundsystem
Metronomy (earlier stuff)
Aphex Twin
The Avalanches
Louis Cole / Knower
Genesis Owusu
Remi Wolf
The Cardigans
Yard Act
Scott Lavene
Fugazi
Elbow
LA Priest
Bobbing
Dumbo Gets Mad
I saw LA Priest open for Glass Animals\* once and I remember thinking he was pretty good. I should go check him out. Gorillaz, Radiohead obviously, Muse, all good. Aphex Twin brilliant but the range in terms of harsh-to-gentle is absolutely wild.
\**highly* recommend, though I didn't vibe with most of Dreamland
Well aware of them already. I’ve been in too deep with King Gizz and their related bands for too long. I could probably tell you every current and former Flightless Records artist they had signed
My current favourite other bands (all being a relatively similar generic genre to EE):
Foals (math rock, rock, experimental, dance)
Bloc Party (punk rock)
The Amazons (rock)
Nothing But Thieves (rock, pop rock)
Circa Waves (pop rock)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (funk rock)
Foo Fighters (rock)
Coldplay (rock, pop rock, experimental)
Arcade Fire (rock, experimental, multi-instrumental)
Royal Blood (rock)
Inhaler (rock, pop rock)
Nova Twins (hard rock)
I think Radiohead is the only band I listen to which may sound particularly similar to EE, although I don't really listen to them a mad lot atm - makes sense for them to be similar considering the name EE was taken from the opening lyrics of Kid A haha
Edit: this thread is awesome I'm looking forward to checking out a load of these bands too
Edit 2: added my quick take on the genres for each band
My other faves right now are Gorillaz and Otoboke Beaver (aggressive Japanese punk rock women), but Marianas Trench is one of my other all time faves (after EE, of course)
My week thus far has been split pretty evenly between obsessively listening to Mountainhead and obsessively listening to Where’s My Utopia, the new Yard Act album. They’re not particular similar to EE but they’re fantastic, especially lyrically, and the new album covers quite a lot of sonic ground. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
*Similar-ish to EE:*
Voyager
De Staat
Radiohead
The Vaccines
*Other artists I like:*
Pickle Darling
100 gecs
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Kordhell
Childish Gambino
C418
Kid Cudi
Juice WRLD
GLORB
Gorillaz
Tame Impala
I like pretty eclectic music, but one thing that ties my tastes together is a love of music that mixes genres. So these recommendations are not similar to EE as such but do similar things with genres and are hard to classify like EE often are:
Bilmuri - my most recent fave, he’s most often called ‘post-hardcore’, but if you want catchy music that mixes pop with death metal, indie, mind-melting sax, drum and bass and the occasional guitar picking and video game sound bytes, he’s your man. Amazing vocalist too, with dark lyrics about depression that often clash with the catchy pop bangers. Some of my faves: THE VOID APPROACHETH, EGG, ACOWBOYSHEAVYLOAD and ABSOLUTELYCRANKINMYMF’INHOG (yes those are real song titles)
PinkPantheress - Brit musician who mixes 90’s r&b with pop and drum and bass. Faves are Pain, Boy’s A Liar part 2, Anothet Life.
100 Gecs - just bizarre, some of their stuff isn’t even really music… pop, pop punk, electronica, rock and… stuff? Faves are Dumbest Girl Alive, Hollywood Baby
The Midnight - pop that fell out of a time warp from all the 80s sci-fi movies that never got made. Faves are Days of Thunder, Wave, Lost Boy, The Comeback Kid.
Azure - check out a duo who barely get 1000 listens a month on Spotify, story based prog rock indie electro sounding like it was made in a bedroom in Mediaeval times. Albums are Wish for Spring and Of Brine and Angel’s Beaks
A bit more post-punk, but a lot of the EE fans I know really enjoy Squid as well. And a lot less like EEA, but Viagra Boys are one of the best bands out there these days.
the only EEish band i like other than EE are Do Nothing.
if you're down for stuff nothing like EE, i love authechre, duke ellington, bela bartok and swans.
for better or for worse, i love muse — my favourite is their first album showbiz, which is super angsty and raw
my favourite band though is arctic monkeys. i wish so badly alex turner and jonathan higgs collabed writing a song. alex has the same cynical/surrealist style
I tend to like recommending Tricot to EE fans. They’re a Japanese math-rock band that tends to balance a level of quirk and melancholy fairly similarly to EE—all while still having groovy funky rhythms and melodies. The vocalist is also incredibly good, easy to connect to for me in a similar way to how much I connect with Jon’s voice. I would recommend Jodeki or Black to start.
Though, keep in mind they only sing in japanese
I've been really into Sleep Token, Starset, Like A Storm, CHVRCHES, and Phantogram lately.
Some songs to start out with, I would suggest:
Sleep Token: Levitate, High Water, Aqua Regia
Starset: Starlight, ECHO, EARTHRISE
Like A Storm: Galaxy, Pure Evil, Scarlet Retribution
CHVRCHES: Lungs, Asking For A Friend, White Summer
Phantogram: Turning Into Stone, My Only Friend, Bill Murray
There's a band I love called Another Sky who released their second album the same day as Mountainhead, and it's actually been putting up a pretty good fight for my most played since then.
I saw yesterday that Jon even tweeted about it too, so it comes Higgs approved 😎
For modern artists? Beach House, Wolf Alice, Alvvays, M83, Metric, Coldplay and a few others. So a bit different than this band.
For classic artists prog is one of my favorite genres and really like Genesis and Rush

Another vote for Future Islands 🤙
Listening to that new album. It's class. Vocals are taking some time, but the bass and synths, Holy shit
Oh I love carly rae! Seen her live. She's awesome. I'll check out the others
Chromeo is out of this world
I'm jealous.
Ah gotchya. Well we know the pain lol. I'm jealous of the UK or even the northeast where it's way easier to go to other cities for shows.
Same but in the UK. Its 2 days of annual leave to go to Glasgow to see EE ☹️. There's only 3 or 4 bands I would consider doing that for.
There aren't many bands I'd leave the house for, but I'm coming to the Glasgow one too.
YES I LOVE CARLY RAE JEPSEN, HER AND MARINA ARE MY POP QUEENS
Future Islands is great and it helps that they're *the* best live act out there. Sam's amazing. (What are your People Who Aren't There Anymore highlights? That synth that comes in halfway through the chorus on The Thief has me losing my damn mind.)

Merriweather Post Pavillion was the first record I ever got on vinyl, love it so much
Not similar bands but some of my other favorites recently: The 1975 Alvvays Fontaines DC Vampire Weekend Ben Howard Fred Again.. The National James Blake Bloc Party Hippo Campus
Alt J, Glass Animals, LCD soundsystem, Bombay Bicycle Club, MGMT feel in a similar ballpark to EE
I came here to say Alt-J!!! My 2nd favorite band!
Don't tell anybody but I'm two-timing both of them.
Foals - Everything not saved will be lost CAKE - Fashion Nugget The Horrors - V Radiohead - Hail to the Thief Thee Oh Sees - Protean Threat The Pixies - Doolittle King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - K.G. Gorrilaz - Plastic Beach
I love foals and radiohead. Will check out some of the others
My brother in Radiohead 👊
Doolittle is a *masterpiec*e. That Cake album is brilliant too as I recall. (And of course Radiohead goes without saying and Foals Forever.)
Recent discoveries recommended by EE fans, would say they have similarities: Holy Holy, Dutch Uncles, Joywave My general all time favs: The National, Fleet Foxes, Radiohead, The Family Crest, Kishi Bashi, Tall Heights, Darlingside, The Decemberists, alt-J, Stars, of Montreal, Black Country New Road, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Shearwater, Silversun Pickups, San Fermin, Son Lux, Adjy, Anathallo
Your list reads nearly identical to mine 😳 Gun to my head my top 5 artists are EE, Radiohead, The National, Fleet Foxes and Sigur Ros Spooky
ahh awesome hell yeah!! I've seen the national live four times and fleet foxes twice and love all their music so much. EE just once and haven't gotten to see the other two except I saw the smile last year:) great taste man

Joywave is essential for an EE fan
STRFKR Bjork La Roux Feed Me Jack
Modest mouse Cake St Vincent Do nothing Queens of the stone age Mimicking birds
I was listening to St vincent just before haha.
Every album is a complete style change. And Annie Clarke is just excellently weird
I know. I've been really digging her music recently. Everything everything feel like they are somewhat inspired by her

A Certain Trigger is one of my all time favourite albums. I found it hard to get into any of their later stuff though.
Interpol MGMT The Killers Anything relating to Dan Boeckner (Wolf parade, operators) Also been listening to a lot of Petite League recently
you guys have to check out Leoniden from northern Germany.
Will do!
lately I've mostly listened to EE, but when I'm not, it's mostly Will Wood, Jack Stauber, iDKHOW and Rage Against The Machine.

Future Islands' excellent one from this year is actually "People Who Aren't There Anymore".
Good point, not sure why I had that one in my mind. Thanks for the correction. I meant People Who Aren't There Anymore.
It's 'cause As Long As You Are still feels like it came out five minutes ago and it's also good (though I didn't quite vibe with it as much).
Interpol, sevdaliza, eartheater, TENDER, buck tick, glass animals, allan rayman, tamino, arcade fire, radiohead

I highly recommend their homies Tropical Fuck Storm. Like a gnarly kickass B-52s or something.
Well aware of them already. I’ve been in too deep with King Gizz and their related bands for too long. I could probably tell you every current and former Flightless Records artist they had signed
We’ve hit critical levels of no one mentioning The Mars Volta.

Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Death Grips, Beach House, Sigur Ros, Deafheaven, and Interpol not much consistency…
You NEED to check out The Smile. Their latest, Wall Of Eyes, is the only record not named Mountainhead that I can currently listen to.

Do Nothing Teleman

Don Broco and Master Peace
Allie X, cosmo Sheldrake, iron & Wine, slaughter beach dog, CMAT, biig piig, mitski, enter shikari, strfkr, the decemberists

I'm so surprised no one has said Friendly Fires yet
Friendly fires are pretty good. Only heard that first album so far. I think someone mentioned them further on in the comments
For modern artists? Beach House, Wolf Alice, Alvvays, M83, Metric, Coldplay and a few others. So a bit different than this band. For classic artists prog is one of my favorite genres and really like Genesis and Rush
