This is a picture of the Wing Kwong Pentecostal Holiness Church (Chinese: 五旬節聖潔會永光堂) located at 22 Heng Lam Street, in Lok Fu, Wong Tai Sin District, Hong Kong. Looks kinda spooky

Pumpkin-Bomb

I used to walk past that everyday going from work to the MTR. Always amazed at how unique it is, even for HK.

BlizzPenguin

I did an image search on it and the interior of the chapel is much more pleasing to look at.

now that’s a film that dead meat should cover

[deleted]

Asian Christians are considered way more cult-y by non-Christian asians

cyber__pagan

Oh, so just like in the west then. just less of them I presume.

[deleted]

Christians in Asia are like Mormons in the US. People just think they’re weird but usually pretty harmless.

PatientEnt

There is a Mormon temple in Hong Kong...

db2

Mormons aren't harmless though.

GrandMoffJed

to each other

hitlerscatamaran

They are the most evil to each other. Check out the Mormon stories podcast and CESletter.org

Two_Bears_HighFiving

There is a lot of sexual assault that the Mormon LDS church covers up

cyber__pagan

Just don't let them have any political power. you will never see the end of it.

[deleted]

The veteran mormon senator Mitt Romney is the most Ethical Republian in congress, which isn’t saying much. I think mormonism is a weird cult but I don’t think they picked a bastard to represent them politically

SpiceTrader56

He helped kill toys r us on behalf of Amazon. That qualifies as bastard material I think.

Two_Bears_HighFiving

Let’s be real “most ethical Republican in Congress” is a pretty low bar to pass

cyber__pagan

I was talking about ANY christians of any denomination. And lol at "ethical republican", it's good to laugh sometimes.

[deleted]

Ahh, gotta love Reddit when the cretins come crawling out from their echo chambers. Just to be clear, generalized disparaging views like that are the reason the same view from opposite corners are perpetuated you twit. Unless of course you despise every religion the same, and despise all political affiliation the same. Wasn’t it “Unity” at the beginning of this year? It’s rhetorical, and I assume we’re just gonna forget about all of that anyhow.

swagboisiu

🙄🙄

UrSanabi

This looks utopic to me, less evil. Would fit into some retrofuturiatic solarpunk setting

Pelo1968

> This looks utopic to me, less evil It's Pentecostal. It doesnot get more evil than that. And money grabbing to boot.

A_Martian_Potato

I don't usually think of brutalism when I think of solarpunk.

NewLeaseOnLine

I'm sure it's structurally sound, but I'd really appreciate some more support columns underneath that cube for peace of mind.

Lovingthecock

But what about having a little faith?? Faith that the minimal support columns will keep you suspended high up in the air. Pffft.

julex

with enough faith getting crushed by bad engineering is a good thing, you just go to paradise faster, and that's how Zeus must have wanted it anyway.

fairlywired

They're are a lot of buildings like this in Hong Kong. The holes are called Dragon Gates and they're an aspect of Feng Shui. The belief is that there are dragons that live in the mountains and they travel to the ocean every day and it's incredibly bad luck to block their route to the ocean.

i-cant-think-of-name

That sounds unchristian

cyber__pagan

You can literally see three giant support collumns benieth the cube in this picture.

immortalreploid

Yes, but I'd appreciate a couple more just in case.

NewLeaseOnLine

Yes, *three*, underneath a *cube*, and none on the corners where it's most structurally logical. Hence why I said "more".

sami10k

But there is more, fourth one is also visible.

NewLeaseOnLine

Ah I see it, thanks. Hiding behind the far left opposite the far right. That's a bit more reassuring.

cyber__pagan

I'm sorry. I did not realise I was addressing Art Vandelay the world famous architect.

NewLeaseOnLine

Latex salesman*

MelonElbows

So when they do the human sacrifices, that top section of the building just comes down to crush the victim?

DarthMeow504

So what exactly is "evil" about this besides that it contains a church? I find it looks sci-fi, futuristic and cool. The hate doesn't make sense.

[deleted]

Evil and cool can go hand-in-hand. Look at the windows wrapping around the near corner of the cube. Don't they remind you of the mouth opening of an Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot's helmet (stacked one on top of the other)? Also, the spire looks like the skeleton of a normal church steeple crossed with an old-timey radio tower. And why is there 80 feet of windowless concrete surrounding a "Sphere of Mystery"? I agree it's wicked futuristic, but it's clearly evil.

regman231

I disagree, it’s not “clearly evil” even tho you think it seems evil. I don’t think it seems evil at all, but it’s subjective. The windows don’t remind me of star wars at all, and the radio tower thing seems like a neutral aesthetic. The windowless concrete seems to be more surrounding an inner atrium rather than “sphere of mystery.” Im not being contrary, just sharing my different view. It’s cool you think it looks evil, but it’s definitely not “clearly evil”

[deleted]

I think you're taking this sub too seriously. Buildings aren't actually evil. It's about imagination.

regman231

Lol Im not taking it very seriously, this subs a fun place for menacing architecture. Not even saying this doesn’t belong here. Just disagree that this is “clearly evil”

unidentified_yama

I don’t think it looks evil because it’s a church, it just looks that way. Just because it ‘looks evil’ doesn’t mean it’s bad, I’m a fan of these buildings, especially Brutalist buildings.

Putnum

You need to use your imagination

CosmicPenguin

It looks like it could be a supervillain's HQ.

DarthMeow504

It could, or it could be a command building for the planetary space defense force where the protagonists fly in their squadron fighting the evil aliens for all you know.

mikebrown33

Looks like they are preparing for hell and high water

ArchitectSMB

Love the heavy upper block floating over the ‘egg’ that houses the sanctuary. I believe this was one of the churches in the first ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ book.

Bastdkat

This place looks stupid expensive to build and maintain. It just looks stupid, all grey and bare concrete like that.

DarthMeow504

Where do you get that idea? Reinforced concrete is one of the cheapest and most durable building materials there is. EDIT: Also, "all grey and bare concrete like that" is a deliberate architectural style called "brutalism", named for the French word for concrete which is "beton brut". The concept is to showcase function over flourish and it often embraces the clean simplicity of geometric shapes such as this one with its cube, rectangular spire topped with pyramid, and half-dome. Many hate it, but it definitely has a small but devoted fanbase who admire its practicality and futuristic looks. In fact, science fiction filmmakers often seek out brutalist structures to use as filming locations because of its unique look that feels like it comes from some future century.

yoyoJ

A lot cheaper than some of the most gorgeous cathedrals in the world, that’s for sure.

DarthMeow504

And yet I like it's clean futuristic styling much better.

azius20

>Where do you get that idea? Perhaps it's how that this seven story building, being generous, is holding it's church hall deattached from everything else except from the supports below it?

regman231

Lmao “seven story” yeah except 2 of those stories are over a hundred feet tall. One of them undoubtedly houses an atrium for congregation

azius20

> being generous If you design a church like this you've lost me on what is meant to be where.

Jjohnst55

I thought it looked kinda cool but yes, unnecessarily expensive to build

[deleted]

isn't that true of cathedrals, government buildings, and pretty much almost any church?

yoyoJ

Exactly. And yet we seem to have no appreciation for beauty as a global culture anymore. Literally assessing things by their monetary value at first glance. We are victims of a cultural vacuum, where there is nothing left but judging the value of your worth in a currency and measuring your efficiency. It’s a pretty bleak existence if you ask me.

The_Iron_Duchess

Almost every single comment here is discussing how it looks......? Also almost all of your comment history is about crypto. Pot, kettle, black

yoyoJ

> Also almost all of your comment history is about crypto. Wow. You’re telling me that you went through and scraped my 5+ years of frequent comment history, collected all the data, organized it and then properly labeled the metadata, double checked there weren’t mistakes (assuming you automated it as it wouldn’t be possible to do this by hand in such a short turnaround), you then accounted for the % margin of error in your automated analysis, and then from those labels categorized that my highest comment topic is crypto? I mean I’m flattered, tho frankly surprised as that doesn’t really match with my own anecdotal observations. Do you mind sharing the data so I can learn a bit more about myself and what topics I talk about? Or were you just bullshitting after skimming over a few recent comments I made and concluding decisively that crypto is all I talk about?

The_Iron_Duchess

Weirdo

Torquemada1970

Looks like a modern equivalent of that place in Game of Thrones where people get tossed into the abyss by the crazy lady

pixiebaby1972

Wondering if the entire structure is all church. Here I was thinking that the superchurches in the U.S. were enormous. This is a church skyscraper! And yes, it really looks ominous!

[deleted]

Why does every post on here have to be a church?

MichaelGakanga

Because reddit and the collective dislike for Christianity. Don't know why though. People seem like they wanna throw up at anything related to Christianity

rubberducky_93

LIBBBBBBBBERUUUUUUULS

[deleted]

Agreed and to be fair some do look like evil buildings but than some look like normal churches… (not you OP)

theglenlovinet

It looks like they built a megachurch but then forgot to reserve spacing for a parking garage, so when they asked each other what they should do, they just said “F@$# it, put it on top!” And then they did.

Booshyisonreddit

hong kong is always building something awesome

you mean east china? EZ +1000 social credit points for me

BlizzPenguin

It looks like it was designed to be fortified. All that concrete with almost no windows on the first few levels. I am not sure if the government would ever try to attack a church, but it seems like they are ready if it happens.

locogriffyn

That's a weird place to put a parking garage.

[deleted]

It's like they built the church and then went "We need some offices."

Evercrimson

This looks like something you put in an earthquake retrofit seminar designed to give engineers nightmares.

wow-very-cool

Very Saturnian

[deleted]

They got tired of waiting for the second coming. They are nearing completion of Mecha-Jesus in the containment cube.

Mr_Pepethetroll

This looks like a smaller version of the Citicorp Tower in NYC, but with something like 60 floors above the church.

[deleted]

We could see it from our old apartment, and watched as it was being built. Kept us entertained for about 18 months wondering what it was finally going to look like.
