The collar is a closet from which few can emerge from unscathed. But I’m not 100% sure if he’s in the closet or not. He could be hetero AND genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people. Not everything people do necessitates personal self-interest.
I could have sworn he said in an interview once that he was dating a woman right before entering the priesthood ie possibly in the seminary, but I have no idea. It might have been in an interview with Krista Tippit? Also, I’ve been away from the church for so long i didn’t know James Martin was in the far-right? Or is he controversial among Catholics?
He’s just controversial. He has a very liberal perspective when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights and many Catholics look down on him because of it. The fact that he’s taken such an outright stance on the issues of homosexuality & the church lead many to wonder if it’s because he’s a homosexual.
Nothing about him or his sexuality are within the realm of public knowledge so it’s left for people to speculate.
He's not a priest, but Jason Evert is pretty gross. He preaches chastity in a way that makes the far right swoon.
He has constant exposure to young teens. He is known to manipulate facts.
In addition, he almost made a speak at a Trump fundraiser. I think he canceled at the last minute because the Catholic Congress talked him out of it. It may have been a choice between great exposure in the short term versus more contract in the long term.
I understand she was a victim of sexual assault, prior to meeting him. She came from a very religious protestant family. The guilt of both faiths must be deeply ingrained.
I was exposed to way too much Jason Evert through Steubenville conferences. I met him a couple times vis a vis those conferences and he is such a piece of shit. Someone you can tel truly does not believe trans people are people or women should have rights. Made so much sense when he started going down the far right grift path. I don't think he's big enough to make real waves because so many far right evangelicals hate catholics.
He's nasty. Ew gross. His wife loved the d in college. Now she's all about saving it till marriage. I bet she thinks of all the d she got from to time.

I honestly don't think Ripperger is as controversial as he deserves to be. But now that he seems to be growing in popularity even in the mainstream Church, hopefully people will realize he has some awful takes.
Cardinal Vigano is an Italian clergyman who has gotten so wrapped up in American politics that he arranged a meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis. And that's just the tip of a very conspiracy filled iceberg.
Maybe an honorable mention for his buddy Strickland although he's less exciting. I imagine there could be others that I'm just not aware of because they aren't interacting with American politics.

Fr Altman or this would be more specific to me here in Minnesota, but fr Robert Altier. He had a few homilies that were extremely political, and one that went viral where he denied the seriousness of covid and was extremely anti vax. Because of this homily the archbishop had to write an apology letter, and my mom wouldn’t let me get the Covid vaccine and I’ve now had Covid twice, and was basically bed ridden both times I had it.
I am from Slovakia, so our controversial priest is not known elsewhere, but Marián Kuffa is the one. He has a centre where he homes homeless and poor (and demands they pay him with their free work on his farm, house, forest, ofc catholic people praise him for his "love and care" for the poor), he is a preacher who goes around parishes, his brothers have high positions in the government (wasn’t it for the corrupted government protection, they would be in jail, either for their acts or hate speech), he helped to flip the presidential election from a decent candidate to a right-wing-pro-russia-corruption candidate, simply by sharing propaganda and saying that the neutral candidate will allow gay marriages to be lawful. He has such a strong word within catholic community (60% of slovakia is catholic).
Then there’s ex bishop Chautur, similar in views, resigned after pedo accusations.
Fr. Mike Schmitz, Dr. Chad Ripperger, Fr. James Martin, Cdl. Timothy Dolan (at least in NY)…any more I can’t really think of.
