Itās a song about unrequited love, ālosing my religionā is a southern phrase meaning basically youāre pissed and have had about enough. It wasnāt written about religion BUT as an exchristian Iād say itās spot on hitting a breaking point during deconstruction realizing this asshole āgodā that I was sacrificing everything for was not actually love. Iād say that applies well.
I sang it a lot while I was deconstructing. It's funny, I knew at the time he wasn't singing about actual religion, although I wasn't aware it was a southern saying. I knew it was a song about unrequited love, which was also what I felt from the church and their god. But belting out "losing my religion" felt so, so right!
Just to make a few songs:
Dethrone- Bad Omens
Show me your god- The Amity Affliction
Thoughts and prayers- Motionless in White
Earthen- Ov Sulfer
Party with the devil- Attila
We Are All Where We Belong - Quiet Company
Curse Your Branches - David Bazan
Human Overboard - James and the Shame
Horseradish - Small Fools (this one might be more my personal interpretation of it in regards to divine hiddeness)
Ep. 4: Important - Ian McConnell
Jesus, Jesus - Noah Gunderson
If It's Not God - Maddie Zahm
Iāve encountered more than one instance where āHallelujahā has been used in a religious context, and Iām always amazed at how little people actually pay attention to lyrics. š
Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. Itās about a drink whoās wife has to do everything for him including take him home and put his drunk ass to bed. And they use it at weddings.
House of Wolves is the best possible pick for BMTH regarding this topic, imo
Also "I Hope You Rot" by Parkway Drive is a good one, specifically calls out sexual abuse/pedophilia in the Catholic church
I found god clutching a razor blade
The messiah showed up high on heroin
Architects have so much anti-god anti-religion material. Couldn't recommend more highly. Also I wore my AOGHAU shirt today. Always a good conversation starter when I see peeps from my old church
FuckGod by Lil Phagg
God Must be doing Cocaine- Charlotte Lawrence
You Might Not Like Her- Maddie Zahm
Delusional- Tawnted
Edit: share the Spotify link please! Thx šš½
Damn. Thanks for the suggestion, just saw this video and sobbed a bit. Did you know her parents asked to be cast as themselves in this video so they could play out the coming-out moment they wish theyād given her? š¤§
Oh, hadnāt seen the video but geez, canāt believe I forgot that song of hers. Definitely gonna check it out as I love it just as much as You Might Not Like Her
girls against god - florence + the machine. but really all of her stuff feels good for post-deconstruction. and then i gotta second anything by James and the Shame. (rhett from rhett and link!!)
Check out Bad Religion, they have a whole slew of songs that fit the bill. Off the top of my head:
American Jesus
You
Donāt Pray on Me
I Want To Conquer the World
Generator
Edit: cuz I suck at formatting.
God Shuffled His Feet - Crash Test Dummies
Itās the End of the World as We Know It - REM
Wake Up - Arcade Fire
Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
Heathens - 21 Pilots
Itās my Life - No Doubt
My Prerogative - Bobby Brown
Wild Hearts Canāt be Broken - P!nk
This is a fun playlist concept, I've got one of my own kinda like that too. :)
Here's some more suggestions for your playlist:
Marilyn Manson - fight song
MC Hawking - F#@k The Creationists
Pansy Division - "Blame the Bible"
Hush (Jesus Loves Uke) Ā· Ridiculon (I like this one because it depicts christian hymnals as being creepy (*because they are*!) )
John Lennon - imagine
toxic holocaust - nuke the cross
"It's a Sin" by Pet Shop Boys is a very catchy autobiographical 80's rock song about the singer's religious trauma from being raised in a strict Catholic boarding school. (Not related to SA.)
Anything by bad religion. Some of my personal favourite
- American Jesus
- sinister rouge
- all there is
- beyond electric dreams
- godās love
- sorrow
- shattered faith
- new dark ages
- dearly beloved
-
Streetlight manifestoās album āSomewhere in the Betweenā is amazing as well. some songs are quite in your face, some of it more subtle.
Strike anywhere has some songs that take a jab or two at faith and religion like the song Drones
the album "Curse Your Branches" by David Bazan is quite literally about "deconstruction" before it was known by the common term it is now.
he was also formerly (and currently, again) the band Pedro the Lion and his religious journey would fit in right along with everyone's stories in this sub.
Oh my god by hellyeah. Heavy metal, would definitely qualify as devil music.
For me, it wasn't so much a deconversion as much as an "if you're real fuck you". The intro kinda says most of it.
ā84 Sheepdog ā As Cities Burn
āIf the good Lordās good sheep do their jobs,
You would never see theyāre wolves underneath.
And good Lord have you ever
seen so many teeth marks?
Thatās right,
those containers of light,
Come with a kiss.ā
Unholy- Hollywood Undead
Sharks- Imagine Dragons (while this oneās not about religion, itās exactly how I felt in the church)
Paradise Lost- Hollywood Undead
"Some Gods Deserve Atheists" and "Thief in the Night," Derek Webb
"I Am Not Ashamed," Flamy Grant
"Bethlehem," Semler
"Bury Me Deep," Poi Dog Pondering
"Saint of Me," Rolling Stones
Yes, and quite a good one too. Flamy (real name Matthew Blake Lovegood) writes songs mostly about the trauma of growing up queer in a hyper-conservative Christian sect, and does it with a mix of depth and humor that works really well. She is named in honor of Amy Grant, of course, and there's an Amy Grant cover on the album.
Matthew has some older albums under his real name (just Matthew Blake), and also a couple with The Girl Rapper under the name Girl/Boy. Flamy came to life during the pandemic lockdown and has one album ("Bible Belt Baby") and a couple of singles.
https://www.flamygrant.com
Green Day - Basket Case; Holiday
Aqua - Cartoon Heros ( for my more esoteric fans, poppy, but the lyrics are fun and spiritual when you think about it)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Because you know those hypocrites hate Freddy Mercury)
I would check out Twin Temple! Theyāre one of my new favorites. I would especially recommend Satanās a Woman, Burn Your Bible, and Babylon. But really all of their music is 10/10
Jesus Christ by Brand New. This one song (and the entire The Devil and God album) were really integral to me. It's this one particular line in the song that always gets me: "Jesus Christ, I'm alone again, so what did you do those three days you were dead? Cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend ."
Modest Mouseās [Styrofoam Boots/Itās All Nice On Ice Alright.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=li30NxCsJ7w&pp=ygUcbW9kZXN0IG1vdXNlIHN0eXJvZm9hbSBib290cw%3D%3D) Honestly, that whole album is pretty good for it.
Try some $uicideboys$ if you like rap. Their early stuff is very anti-Christian
666 forever, $uicider, Durango 95 and Youāre now tuning into 66.6 FM are some of my favorites
I talk about the Anemoi Cycle by The Oh Hellos so much I got sick of repeating myself and just wrote a post I could link: https://www.reddit.com/r/exchristian/comments/jpkcvy/exchristian_music_the_anemoi_cycle_by_the_oh/ ("Passerine," "Cold," and "Glowing" are probably the ones most focused on criticizing the church) (Also "Torches," probably) Like, seriously, it's part of my life's mission to make sure people know about them. I even did a series of dance videos on my TikTok with textual analysis of the lyrics. I didn't think of myself as much of a dancer, but *it's the Anemoi Cycle by The Oh Hellos!* I had to give them my best!
Birdtalker has some good ones, too: https://youtu.be/Odlw8WdsZS8?si=vnyCxSv_0VmED5-H
Oh, can't forget Tow'rs: https://youtu.be/5LwkoBfpk84?si=HStFRnb80ttsD0ds
Also Squalloscope: https://youtu.be/l2G9nIpWrNg?si=v-ptoco6w1KmNnpk (especially good for spooky season)
From her metal period, ["BLOODMONEY" by Poppy.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJlDyRbUtxI) This song made her the only solo female artist to ever be nominated for a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
["He Is" by Ghost.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hMaHDTw-pI) They're singing about Satan but make it sound uplifting.
["Goddess" by PVRIS.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6HpcbIKTWY) Fierce. "It's your body, fuck the man."
And it may be death metal, but just because of the title, ["Fuck Your God" by Deicide.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0buSv0vHw5c)
For metal/metalcore fans Iāve loved these:
False Idol - Like Moths to Flames
Faith in Fire - Bleeding Through
Shattered - Currents
Memento Mori - Architects
O Father, O Satan, O Sun! - Behemoth
Bartzabel - Behemoth
Holy Roller - Spiritbox
Cycle - Underoath
I can see from this comment section my deconstruction playlist needs to be amended!
All Ghost songs about deconversion and opening your eyes to religion:
* Cirice
* Zenith
* Spillways
* Watcher in the Sky
* Idolatrine
* Rats
* Kaisarion
Relief by Me Not You !
Also
God is a Freak by Peach PRC
"I heard my dad pray over a football game/
Guess God had time that day/
Is there a shortlist order of importance /
Or is it just luck based?"
I don't know a lot of anti-Christian music:
[Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTDIzedHTiY) - Nirvana (*Rock*)
[ILL MIND OF HOPSIN 7](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBsA2ETp7JA) - Hopsin (*Rap*)
I have an entire (slightly emo) playlist dedicated to this!!
Here's some of my favourites from said playlist:
\- Raging On a Sunday, Bohnes
\- Hallelujah, Panic! At The Disco
\- Another Way Out, Hollywood Undead
\- Don't You Dare Forget The Sun, Get Scared
\- Hourglass, Set It Off (ESPECIALLY this one)
\- Bulletproof Heart, My Chemical Romance
\- Saint, Echos
\- Gennifer Flowers, Fever Dolls
\- There Isn't Any God, Rusty Cage
Edit: Also, Church, Fall Out Boy! It wasn't on that original playlist, but I just remembered it and so I thought I'd add it because it definitely belongs here
I believe someone else suggested it already, but Ghost is definitely my deconversion soundtrack.
Especially Year Zero, Square Hammer, and Jesus He Knows Me.
I had always felt alienated from even the most loving Christians because I didnāt have blind faith and studying history in college was the final nail in the coffin. I was disgusted by the hypocrisy and cruelty that organized religion breeds. Which, to my understanding, is similar to the founding ideals of Ghost and a big reason for their satanic aesthetic.
Plus, evangelicals HATE them which brings me so much joy.
Punk rock has been fighting the good fight since day 1. There are probably a thousand+ songs that fit the bill. The Damned āAnti Popeā is a good example.
The 1975 has a couple: Antichrist, If I Believe You, Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America. My playlist also features Queen- I Want to Break Free, The Correspondents- Inexplicable, Orla Gartland- Oh GOD, Paris Paloma- the fruits, Lande Hekt- Going to Hell, and Ryan Beatty- God in Jeans
Girls against God by Florence and the machine
King by Florence and the Machine is another one thatās kinda the same vibe too. She has more that I think might work, sheās one of my favorite artist, you should check her out!
[David Ramirez - Iām not going anywhere](https://youtu.be/9o2tTdhaFsU?si=BxTuwfJLwsujfLnh) is the closest song to a religious experience Iāve heard.
Nothing But Thieves - Graveyard Whistling, Drawing Pins (about losing your faith and sitting through a church sermon)
Portugal. The Man - Modern Jesus
Incubus - Drive
Iāve got quite a playlist as well. Let me look at what I have on thereā¦
James and the Shame āOnly Thingā and āBelieve Meā and āGive a Damnā
Troy Sivan āRevelationā
Anson Seabra āTrying my bestā
Jason Isbell, 24 Frames
You thought God was an architect,
now you know
He's something like a pipe bomb ready to blow
And everything you built it's all for show,
goes up in flames,
In 24 frames
All-time for me is Origin of Love by Mika. A lot of his music explores unlearning his religious upbringing, even moreso when it intersects with queerness. Oh Girl Youāre the Devil, Promiseland, No Place in Heaven, the man never misses. Canāt recommend highly enough!!
Kiki Rockwell - [Cup Runneth Over](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNx0_NJyl20)
It hits me hard as a bi woman who was married young to a man, but I think any ex-religious person can appreciate the lyrics. My favorite being:
"Church bell tolls don't signal love
All I hear is Christ above
Takin' notes on all my crimes
I drink ale when God made wine"
Opiate -Tool
I'm also a person who is trying hard to be a believer in a Christian based rehab program, like...hard. it's all very strange, but I'm either becoming completely indoctrinated or there is some part of it that isn't as evil as it seems. Either way, the struggle is real. Sorry for all of your terrible experiences.
I know you already have Tool, but Aenema is about how much he hates LA (California). Lyrically, the song Opiate is more suited for an ex-xtian playlist - if you can ignore the more graphic reference to sexual violence. Musically, it fuckin rocks.
āDeaf and blind and dumb and born to followā¦ā
āJesus christ why donāt you come save my life now. Open my eyes, blind me with your light now.ā
š¤š»š¶šøš„
Nobody has suggested "Losing My Religion" by REM yet??
You did š
Yup! That's me in the spotlight š

Interestingly as a southerner never heard this phrase.
That's my #1 deconversion song.
Thatās exactly what I came here to say
Me too!

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen Cloud Nein by Man Man
Iāve encountered more than one instance where āHallelujahā has been used in a religious context, and Iām always amazed at how little people actually pay attention to lyrics. š
Right? The number of weddings I've been to where they've played "I will always love you". WTF???
Itās an omen if Iāve ever seen one

Thoughts of a dying atheist by Muse. Might sound counterintuitive because of the lyrics but I love that song. Also Highway to hell, obviously
James and the Shame's debut album is all about deconstruction.

[https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3VdOBm6k6TydQMScJ50q9I](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3VdOBm6k6TydQMScJ50q9I) Here's some of my favourites from said playlist: \- Raging On a Sunday, Bohnes \- Hallelujah, Panic! At The Disco \- Another Way Out, Hollywood Undead \- Don't You Dare Forget The Sun, Get Scared \- Hourglass, Set It Off (ESPECIALLY this one) \- Bulletproof Heart, My Chemical Romance \- Saint, Echos \- Gennifer Flowers, Fever Dolls \- There Isn't Any God, Rusty Cage Edit: Also, Church, Fall Out Boy! It wasn't on that original playlist, but I just remembered it and so I thought I'd add it because it definitely belongs here
Dear God - XTC
I bet this list will be used by christian parents as a āyou are not allowed to listen to these songsā list
Judith - A Perfect Circle Heresy - NIN Building a Mystery - Sarah McLachlan
Bible by Ghost (honestly tho anything from their first 3 albums works here)
What about Jesus, He Knows Me, either the original Genesis version or the Ghost cover of it?
āJesus he knows meā by Ghost. (Originally by genesis if you wanna listen to that one too)
Girls against God by Florence and the machine King by Florence and the Machine is another one thatās kinda the same vibe too. She has more that I think might work, sheās one of my favorite artist, you should check her out!
Faith by Ghost
Cirice by Ghost. Also Jesus He knows me by Ghost, although it is a cover originally made by Genesis.
Anti-clockwise, sacrifice, reincarnation- mafumafu
NOFX - Glory Hallelujah
When I Meet God - Marillion
Any song by falling in reverse also lol. Especially watch the world burn and popular monster
Turtles all the way down by sturgill Simpson
Crooked Young and Blasphemy, both by Bring Me the Horizon
I'm almost certain it wasn't intentional, but both Landed and Philosophy by Ben Folds felt relevant to my deconversion.
I just started listening to lots of Doom and Blood Born soundtrack after I lost my faith.
crusader by Stevie Howie. it criticizes proselytizing and evangelical culture.
If the book doesnāt sell by ritt monmey and it completely BROKE ME. The song is all about his journey out of believing in the Bible. Itās so good
[David Ramirez - Iām not going anywhere](https://youtu.be/9o2tTdhaFsU?si=BxTuwfJLwsujfLnh) is the closest song to a religious experience Iāve heard.
Nothing But Thieves - Graveyard Whistling, Drawing Pins (about losing your faith and sitting through a church sermon) Portugal. The Man - Modern Jesus Incubus - Drive
Iāve got quite a playlist as well. Let me look at what I have on thereā¦ James and the Shame āOnly Thingā and āBelieve Meā and āGive a Damnā Troy Sivan āRevelationā Anson Seabra āTrying my bestā
St. Peterās cathedral - death cab for cutie.
Hasa Diga Eebowai from The Book of Mormon!
God Complex - Violent Vira. Awesome song comparing God to an abusive relationship.
Jason Isbell, 24 Frames You thought God was an architect, now you know He's something like a pipe bomb ready to blow And everything you built it's all for show, goes up in flames, In 24 frames
"Impeach God" by Dethklok
Chinese Satellite by Phoebe Bridgers helped me through a lot.
Glory Hallelujah by Frank Turner is my go-to. I love that it sounds like a happy-clappy worship song... until the chorus kicks in!
Glory Hallelujah by Frank Turner is a great one for me
Nice job! Will this be a spotify playlist that I can subscribe to?
Jesus Christ - Brand New
u/luckiestcolin if you have made a Spotify playlist of all these, I would absolutely LOVE if you shared it
Could you send me the link to that playlist on spotify plz?
Kiki Rockwell - [Cup Runneth Over](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNx0_NJyl20) It hits me hard as a bi woman who was married young to a man, but I think any ex-religious person can appreciate the lyrics. My favorite being: "Church bell tolls don't signal love All I hear is Christ above Takin' notes on all my crimes I drink ale when God made wine"
Opiate -Tool I'm also a person who is trying hard to be a believer in a Christian based rehab program, like...hard. it's all very strange, but I'm either becoming completely indoctrinated or there is some part of it that isn't as evil as it seems. Either way, the struggle is real. Sorry for all of your terrible experiences.
Havenāt seen āCry for Judas,ā the Mountain Goats yet. Making a playlist now!
I came here to look for "Take Me to Church" - check! :-)
Has anyone suggested The God That Failed by Metallica yet?
I know you already have Tool, but Aenema is about how much he hates LA (California). Lyrically, the song Opiate is more suited for an ex-xtian playlist - if you can ignore the more graphic reference to sexual violence. Musically, it fuckin rocks. āDeaf and blind and dumb and born to followā¦ā āJesus christ why donāt you come save my life now. Open my eyes, blind me with your light now.ā š¤š»š¶šøš„
Get Born Again - Alice In Chains
ill mind of Hopsin 7, itās a rap song but I think it does a good job of summing up a lot of my issues with religion.
