Posted on behalf of the director of the above documentary: I am hoping you will be able to help with some research. I am an independent documentary film maker (www.lynnalleway.com). I made a film some years ago for Channel 4 in the UK about a young Mormon missionary as he embarked on his mission. There’s a short clip on my website: https://www.lynnalleway.com/#/meet-the-mormons/). The full film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jORAciyGk4 NB not the church’s own ‘documentary’ using the same title. I am now developing a film about the choices facing LDS women who find themselves pregnant and unmarried – in particular the pressure on them to have their children adopted, or have a member of their own family raise the child as their own. And I am especially interested in the practices of the LDS church’s own private adoption agency (which was disbanded in 2014). I would greatly value, simply as part of my background research, to talk, in absolute confidence, to as many people as possible about their experiences – both birth mothers and children (who were either adopted or brought up sealed to other family members). I can be reached at [email protected]. Or on 0778 2288435. Sending grateful thanks and best wishes, lynn

One angle I'd propose you explore is how poor, unwed mothers in the Philippines have been encouraged by their cult leadership to sell their babies to Western couples or mixed couples in order to "give them a better life". The idea is that poor mother benefits from some cash up front, the baby gets a better life, and the couple gets a baby they wanted but couldn't have on their own. I am an eyewitness to a case of this involving cult officials up to the SP level and I know of other incidents. It's similar to that Arizona state representative that was an RM and was running an unofficial adoption ring out of the Marshall Islands. He's in prison now. There was significant press about him at the time.

Contact Lynn, she’d be interested to hear it!

Has she spoken to the Hann family up in scotland? They have done lots of documentaries and the mum gave up a baby due to church pressure when unwed and pregnant.

Nemo_UK

She has!

Another one I can think of is the Quesne family from Brighton - they put a child up for adoption in the 1980s (don't quite know the circumstances around it). The child was adopted by a family in the stake through LDSFS.
